What Members Thought

I listened to the audiobook, and it is hands down one of the all time best audiobook performances I’ve listened to. In fact I don’t think I’d have liked this book as much if I’d just read it. But it really captured me and I loved the story and the characters. I feel like I fell in love with so many of the characters and the voice actors played them so well. I was so sad it was a fictional band and I couldn’t listen to the Aurora album.

Wow! I stayed up way to late to finish this book and have no words. What a great book! This story, told in interview format, was excellent. It was so intriguing, and often entertaining, to hear all the different perspectives about this band. I'm sad that this book is fiction as I so want to hear their songs!

The audiobook is fantastic. I'm curious to see the dramatization.

Probably more like a 4.7 but let's round it up.
This book just got to me. It's a beautiful weaving of a story, the way things get remembered differently, interpreted differently, seen differently, based on who you are. And the music. I spent so long wanting to hear the songs, hearing them in my head, and dreaming of this kind of music.
Just gorgeous, start to finish. Life, love, music, sharing yourself, sharing your world, and what you do to escape it and find it again. There aren't enough words ...more

I really didn't expect to love this book. It's about the seventies rock scene...major drugs, sleeping around, crazy relationships... but I did. Right time, right book. The structure of the book is a series of interviews. It's very strange when you find out the identity of the narrator. I didn't expect it to matter, but it definitely does. The characters are very human and come to life as the book explodes. These singers were based on the singers I loved in my twenties...Stevie Nicks, Joni Mitche

The format of this book really worked for me because it is written like a transcript of an interview. This style of writing kept me engaged as the dialogue jumped between the 7 members of the band - it feels very "Behind the Music". Taylor Jenkins Reid did a wonderful job of capturing the 70s rock era and paints a picture of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll (and feminism, too). I loved Karen's storyline.

I would not recommend reading this book, you have to listen to the audio version!! I started reading it, and it was good but then the audio version became available through the library and it was so much more fascinating. It’s read by Jennifer Beals who is a spot-on Daisy and Judy Greer who’s perfect as Karin and a bunch of other actors who bring this story of a seventies rock band from LA to life. I’m so curious to hear what their songs would really sound like!
