There are certain genres that don't typically call to me. Historical fiction is one. Books that focus on indian and asian culture are another.
I loved the Namesake. It was a rich world to spend some time in, with characters that I wanted to like- but couldn't always. Themes that surrounded the growth of understanding from childhood to adulthood, or from dependence to independence, and of self discovery added a second layer to this story that I found very interesting, entertaining, and wonderful. ...more

I could not put this book down. Don't expect plot twists or suspense, this is a simple book about someone trying to find his place in his own world, but it is beautifully written and I stayed up multiple nights until 3 am reading it. It is impossible not to identify with something from this book, either the ackwardness of parents who never do the right thing, or who expect something of you that you don't want, or even the disasterous failings of love. I wanted so much more from this book because it was so widely recommended. It is worth a read, but don't go in with high hopes.
