What Members Thought
This had me scratching my head, because so much was happening in it with little world building. Apparently the answer to all of my How?? What?? plot questions is simply “Because…magic”, which I don’t really love. But, I really enjoyed Howl and his eccentricities. There is a lot of talk of how much time he spends in the bathroom getting ready to flirt with girls. I also liked how strong and positive Sophie remained throughout the book, despite being cursed.

A thoroughly enjoyable light fantasy romp. I can't believe I never read this when I was a child. I would have adored this book when I was ten or eleven. Highly recommended for young fantasy readers and for those young at heart who like fairy tale type stories. The book pokes gentle fun at some fairy tale tropes (e.g., the eldest child seeking her fortune; the Witch of the Waste) and has clever elements woven into the story. This was really a fun book, possibly more so because I listened to it rather than reading it in book form and the narrator was very entertaining. All the main characters were very well-constructed by the author and brought delightfully to life by the narrator. I felt I knew what they were like the moment I heard them 'speak'. The descriptive writing was impressive too. I really felt like I was there in every scene, watching the action unfold and enjoying every minute of it.
