2016 challenge: I've finished!
This is fun - I love making lists and categorizing! (Maybe we all do, and that's why we're here?)
Date you finished July 19
Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?) I think this would be "Classic from the 20th century" - I read The Talented Mr. Ripley for that category and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt) - it's difficult to pick ONE :-) As best as I can decide, my favorite was The Cuckoo's Calling
Least favorite prompt - "Self help" - I hope I never see this prompt again.
Least favorite book - The Heart is a Lonely Hunter which I read for the "Oprah" prompt; I was pretty passionate about how much I disliked this one.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017" - " Recommended by a family member," because it's fun to read a book that one of my daughters recommended.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017 - something international, like: "book by an author from a country you've never visited." Or something that is fun to search for, like: "two books with the same word in the title."
Finally, are you in for 2017? - Yes!

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?) Blue cover, when I found Shadow Divers. Ended up being one of my favorite books of the year!
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt) I really, really loved the trilogy by Justin Cronin, which started with The Passage last year but I finished by reading The Twelve and The City of Mirrors this year. I will read these again in the future and count them in my all-time favorite stories now.
Least favorite prompt Political memoir. Ended up doing The Complete Persepolis, but had a really hard time tracking something down. Actually, the number of memoirs I ended up with was too many for me.
Least favorite book Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear. It was fine, but self-help books just were not made for me.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017"
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017 I agree with Nadine above about the something fun to search for! Last year's book with antonyms in the title was totally random and I got a really good one from it (The Sisters Brothers).
Finally, are you in for 2017? Of course! This is one of my favorite things to do each year!
Brenna wrote: "... Last year's book with antonyms in the title was totally random..."
Yes! I loved that prompt! I read Big Little Lies for that one (a book I NEVER would have read otherwise) and discovered that I really loved Liane Moriarty!!!

❃ Date you finished: August 24th
❃ Favorite prompt: fairy tale; never would've started the Lunar Chronicles without this prompt
❃ Favorite book: The Dirt on Ninth Grave
❃ Least favorite prompt: political memoir! Ugh!
❃ Least favorite book: To Live and Die in Dixie
❃ "I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017": book over 600 pages
❃ Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017: a book that's been on your TBR list for ages
❃ Finally, are you in for 2017?: Yes!

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?): A book written by a celebrity: Wherever I Wind Up by R.A. Dickey (knuckleball pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays). I'm not into sports books, but this one was really interesting!
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt): Broken Circle: The Dark Legacy of Indian Residential Schools by Theodore Fontaine. Unfortunately this is a part of our history of Canada. I think every Canadian should read this book.
Least favorite prompt: A self-improvement book. I read The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin.
Least favorite book: The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017": A book based on a fairy tale.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017: Can't think of anything for this one!
Finally, are you in for 2017?: Definitely!!!!

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?) A book you haven't read since high school, actually. I picked Magister Ludi and I was surprised how much more I understood and enjoyed it now.
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt) So hard to pick just one! I would say I loved Gone with the Wind (20th century classic) and The Girl with All the Gifts (being made into a movie) the most.
Least favorite prompt Self-help for sure. But I also feel like I ended up with way too many memoirs because of the "autobiography"/"written by a celebrity"/"political memoir" perfect storm and I prefer more variety and balance in my reading list.
Least favorite book Ugh. The Ask (protagonist with your occupation). I felt bound by the challenge to finish it because there are no other novels about university development staff but I did not enjoy it.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017" A book translated to English. I didn't end up loving my pick for this year (The Three-Body Problem) but I do like exploring the literature of other places and sadly I'm still monolingual.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017 I third the scavenger hunt-style suggestion! Something like "a one-word title" or "a book with a subtitle" would be fun.
Finally, are you in for 2017? Absolutely!

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?) A classic from the 20th Century. Gave me an opportunity to reread To Kill a Mockingbird. Also, A book set in your home state. Found an author who has a whole series about a private eye set in Cleveland!
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt) Mariana, by Susanna Kearsley. Recommended by a family member
Least favorite prompt - Graphic novel.
Least favorite book - The Scarlet Letter, for a book at least 100 years older than you. I do NOT like 19th century literature!
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017" - A National Book Award winner. Did a lot of research for this prompt, and lots to chose from!
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017 - A book recommended by a librarian. Getting familiar with the library again was the best part of the challenge!
Finally, are you in for 2017? YES! But maybe I won't be so intense next year!

Ooh, this is such a good one! I also started familiarizing myself with the library again for this challenge and this would be perfect. Librarians make such great suggestions!

Ooh, this is such a good one! I also started familiarizing myself with the library again for this challenge and this would be perfect. Librarians make such great suggestions!"
Yes! The librarians where I live love to think of fun ways to suggest books. This summer they did Book4tat, and last year they had a Book Match with Seattle when our footie teams played each other.

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?) A book you haven't read since high school, actually. I picked [book:Magister Ludi|1..."
I felt the *exact* same way about least-favorite. Self help: ugh. But also, tooo many memoirs. It's not my favorite, and there were like 4 that could qualify.

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?): A book translated to English (as far as I know, this was my first book since French class in high school that was originally written in a different language.)
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt): The Martian or The Invasion of the Tearling
Least favorite prompt: Political Memoir (I hate politics and not really fond of memoirs)
Least favorite book: A Midsummer Night's Dream (I discovered I either don't really like reading plays, or I don't like Shakespeare. I already knew I didn't like watching plays. I fall asleep in the theatre every time.)
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017": A book that's guaranteed to bring you joy
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017: I like the idea of "book recommended by a librarian"
Finally, are you in for 2017? Maybe. I focused more on filling prompts than enjoying books. If I do it next year, I'll be a lot more laid back about it. I love love love reading, but many of the books I read for this challenge I didn't enjoy that much. Yes, it was kind of fun to stretch myself and read books that I never would have considered before, but I had to force myself to finish several books and they ended up taking weeks to finish instead of days. I may just read for fun next year, and maybe check to see if you do the challenge again in 2018.

❃ Favorite prompt: A Graphic Novel - I never would have read one on my own but I loved Locke & Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft
❃ Favorite book: Oryx and Crake
❃ Least favorite prompt: Book of Poetry - Poetry has never been my thing and I really didn't enjoy my pick In the Clearing
❃ Least favorite book: In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin
❃ "I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017": Science Fiction because that's one of my favorite genres
❃ Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017: a book that's been on your TBR list for ages
❃ Finally, are you in for 2017?: Maybe. I'm working on a re-read of Stephen King books and I know that will keep me busy for awhile. So we'll see. It will probably depend on what the prompts are for 2017.

❃ Favorite prompt: A Graphic Novel - I never would have read one on my own but I loved Locke & Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft
❃ Favorite book: [book:O..."
Oh man, Locke and Key has been on my to-read list for a while. Did you like it? I have loads of other graphic novel recommendations if you found you liked that one. There's some pretty fabulous stuff out there, which was surprising to me, since I love traditional books so much!

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?) A book about a culture you are unfamiliar with. I read Behind the Beautiful Forever's by Katherine Boo. It just spoke to my soul, a wonderful story of heartbreak, loss and the power of those who rise above.
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt): Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson. Road-trip YA fiction that just made my heart happy from start to finish. Even in the moments of sadness.
Least favorite prompt: I didn't really dislike any of the prompts, they were broad enough to find something for everyone.
Least favorite book: Cinder by Marissa Meyer. I usually really enjoy dystopian novels but this one did not have a stand alone plot and was ended abruptly after a mediocre romantic relationship (only relevant because its supposed to be Cinderella) and poor characters development.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017": A book about a culture you are unfamiliar with. I'm always down to learn new things
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017: A book you already have on your shelf (I don't think that was one for this year)
Finally, are you in for 2017? Absolutely!

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?)
I ended up liking a political memoir (Madam Secretary: A Memoir by Madeleine K. Albright) which I was not looking forward to.
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt) A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
Least favorite prompt: comedian
Least favorite book: Yes Please by Amy Poehler
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017": A book based on a fairy tale
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017: non-fiction
Finally, are you in for 2017? Probably not, I was pretty disappointed in the prompts this year. I found many categories were very similar (political memoir/book by a celebrity/book by a comedian/autobiography) or there were limited choices of books (Opera's book club/ protagonist who has your occupation).

I feel the same I chose only 25 categories, because others was repeated from previous year.

* Letters.
* a book about civil life during the wartime
* book with cat on the cover
* book other readers are reviewed on their blog
* re-read book
Maybe we need from different topic for that.

I've wondered the same thing. I don't know if they take suggestions but it would be worth a shot!

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?) - National book Award winner
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt) - The Nightingale
Least favorite prompt - political memoir
Least favorite book - The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017" - A book translated from another language
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017 -

Brenna and Sara:

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?):
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt): have two: 84, Charing Cross Road and My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry
Least favorite prompt: political memoir, thankfully I found the book Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat's Jewel Box by Madeleine K. Albright
Least favorite book: The Nao of Brown. Depressing. Gave it away to someone I hope will have the appropriate appreciation for it.

Least favorite prompt: A book you haven't read since high school (ugh-I had the hardest time deciding)
Least favorite book: This Is Where It Ends (Way too depressing, and it gave me nightmares)
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017": A book that's guaranteed to bring you joy (Joy is good for everyone)
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017: A legal thriller
Finally, are you in for 2017?: Of course! I tend to read the same types of books over and over, and this challenge broadened my reading horizons :)

Date you finished November 02, 2016
Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?) "A book that's becoming a movie this year" (Couldn't decide what to read, too many options)
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt) The Widow
Least favorite prompt "A self-improvement book" (All the Non-fiction prompts actually... sorry I really enjoy Fiction)
Least favorite book Alebrijes (I read it for the "A book recommended by someone you just met" and It was a really bad recommendation XD

Finally, are you in for 2017? YES!!

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?) From the library. I've mostly been buying books for the past few years, so this was a great reason to seek out the library again.
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt) The Color Purple or Kindred
Least favorite prompt By a celebrity

Favorite book (could be different from the prompt) The Martian
Least favorite prompt book based on your occupation
Least favorite book Naked in Death
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017" I would have loved to see the fairy tale prompt repeated, but I'm really excited about the mythology prompts!
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017 I think this has been covered ;)
Finally, are you in for 2017? Absolutely!

August 24!
I had planned to use the December book my book club selected; but found out that didn't meet the less than 150 pages prompt. I looked through the books I'd already read and found one that hadn't been used for a prompt. Done!!
Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?)
A book based on a Fairy Tale - This launched me into the Cinder series, which I enjoyed very much.
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt)
I had quite a few that I really liked. To name a few: Lean In, the Cinder series, Kick Kennedy, March, book 1, The Martian
Least favorite prompt
A self-improvement book. I also did not like having similar prompts such as biography, memoir
Least favorite book
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017"
A book about a culture you're unfamiliar with
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017
Since the 2017 list is out, I'll just say one of prompts I look forward to is "A steampunk novel." It will be fun to explore this genre that is new to me.
Finally, are you in for 2017?
Yes!

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?) - YA Bestseller - The Book Thief !!!
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt) a satire Gulliver's Travels
Least favorite prompt - Self Improvement - I'm old; a little late!
Least favorite book - On the Road by Jack Kerouac by the time you are that age you ought to grow up and be responsible
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017" - Autobiography
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017 - Western
Finally, are you in for 2017? YES !

Date you finished: Oct 3rd
Favorite prompt: I suppose it has to be 'future romance', simply because it looked so unpromising, but resulted in one of the most pleasant discoveries of the year, in John Wyndham's books.
Favorite book: Germany, Memories of a Nation by Neil Macgregor (Set in Europe prompt) - a contender for my personal Book of the Year.
Least favorite prompt: A toss-up between 'Self-improvement book' and 'Book by a celebrity', although I managed to find two good books to satisfy these.
Least favorite book: A Man Called Ove by Fredrick Backman. An easy selection - I really did not get on with this.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017":'Blue cover' - I enjoy the complete randomness of prompts like this; much more fun than prompting by genre etc.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017: Too late for this year, but, again, anything that defines a book physically rather than by its contents.
Finally, are you in for 2017? Definitely

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?) So many of the prompts got me out of my comfort zone, but probably the book of poetry (I read Selected Poems by e e cummings) was most rewarding since I bought this book back in college and it's been sitting on my shelf ever since.
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt) I read Super Sad True Love Story for my dystopian novel and it was amazingly clever and funny, and I actually want to reread it (something I never do).
Least favorite prompt I wasn't too excited about a book I hadn't read since high school (again, I don't like rereading books), but it did give me a chance to look up a book that I barely remembered but one that had made an impact on me (Dreadful Sorry).
Least favorite book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? was not just my least favorite book from this challenge, but possibly my least favorite book EVER. I don't think Mindy Kaling and I would get along...
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017" They've already announced the list, but the prompt I'm most excited about is a book with an unreliable narrator.
Finally, are you in for 2017? Absolutely! I have never in my life read this many books in one year (I'm actually really surprised I managed to finish the challenge!) and I was stuck in my reading habits, reading the same kind of books over and over without much joy. This challenge gave me both a reason to read and a reason to stretch myself. This group has been interesting and positive and supportive, and I can't wait to get started on the 2017 challenge!

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?) - I've never been a huge science fiction / dystopia fan but I chose "The Handmaid's Tale" for the "dystopian novel" prompt and loved it.
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt) - I'd say "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and "Atonement". Honorable mention for "The Girls" and "The Corrections".
Least favorite prompt - Political memoir, although the book I read (Malala's memoir) was ok.
Least favorite book - Maybe "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", everyone loves it and I just found it really boring
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017" - The 2017 list is already out, but I would've said "A book based on a fairy tale" as it was very creative
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017 - too late for that!
Finally, are you in for 2017? - I'm not very excited about some of the prompts ("A book set in the wilderness", for example, or "A steampunk novel") and I feel like this list doesn't allow for much flexibility. But, since started the challenge in 2015 I've read a lot of great books and discovered new authors and genres, so I'm in.

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?) A YA bestseller - never read one before (as an adult), now I am crazy about them.
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt) A Man Called Ove - I laughed and cried...
Least favorite prompt Political memoir.
Least favorite book the graphic novel (Danish)
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017" Sci-fi, another new genre to me, that I like.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017 Oh, list is already official.
Finally, are you in for 2017? Yes, indeed!

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?): I liked the 'first book you see in a book store' prompt. I'm not always good at staying up to date on new books (I have too many old ones left to read!) so it was nice to be on the lookout for some new, mainstream texts.
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt): I really liked The Invention of Hugo Cabret . It was recommended by a coworker and was just as good as promised!
Least favorite prompt: A book set in your home state. There's just not a lot of good books that I have on hand that take place in my tiny little state.
Least favorite book: : This is Where It Ends which also could be my least favorite book ever.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017": A book from the library! I love going there and saving money.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017 : A book published ten years ago?
Finally, are you in for 2017? Of course!

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?): I liked the 'first book you see in a book store' prompt. I'm not always g..."
Ooh, good idea for a new prompt. It's usually a year or 100 years ago - nice way to do something from the back list that you wouldn't usually get to.

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?): A book that takes place on an island. I almost never read a book set on an island, it never gets in my way.
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt): All the Light We Cannot See. It was so beautiful.
Least favorite prompt: A book written by a comedian.
Least favorite book: The Ministry of Fear. I just didn't understand it.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017": The first book you see in a bookstore. Because I like to splurge on books. And in general.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017: No ideas
Finally, are you in for 2017? Yes!

Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017: again, n/a
Finally, are you in for 2017? Yes! I have my first 6 picked out! :)

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?): Jeesh, who came up with these questions?
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt): I think my favorite book from this year is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks but I didn't use it for the challenge. It was just amazing.
Least favorite prompt: A book of poetry (just not my thing)
Least favorite book:It's a toss up between the snore that is The Jungle Book and the horrid The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017": I liked the "gimme" categories so the "best seller" and "award winner" categories are great for me.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017: Too late :-)
Finally, are you in for 2017? Of course!

Favourite Prompt: Oh, I can't decide on my favourite. I liked most of these. I was excited for the first book I see in a book store, just to see what I would get.
Favourite Book: Red Rising (of course I ended up reading the trilogy and loved them all, but only the first one was on the list)
Least Favourite Prompt: Political memoir
Least Favourite Book: Go Set a Watchman. Worse book on my list.
Since I already know what prompts are for next year, I'm happy with the list. Some prompts I wanted to see were added and I'm ready for the new year to get started on the new list.

Date you finished: Dec 4th, 2016
Favorite prompt: I really enjoyed reading books from areas I wouldn't normally. I'm glad I finally read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Murder on the Orient Express. For some of the more vague posts such as a book with a blue cover, I just chose books I'd probably read anyways so the more specific prompts really pushed me. I also really enjoyed the graphic novel prompt. I would read that again in a heart beat.
Favorite book: I read so many great books, but I think The Red Heart by James Alexander Thom was my most favorite. I LOVE historical fiction and this was recommended by my mother, which makes it extra awesome.
Least favorite prompt: The political memoir prompt was a big struggle. I ended up finding a short one. And it ended up being not too painful.
Least favorite book: Middlesex I just couldn't get into it. at. all. It took me 3 months to read.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2017": Dystopian! But they didn't. But I'll get it in there somehow.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017: Book from a perspective of an animal, which they sort of did. At least I can make it be from a perspective of an animal.
Finally, are you in for 2017? Definitely!!!

Suggestion for a new prompt for 2017: A book about current affairs

Favorite Book: There were a few standouts, but maybe T is for Trespass by Sue Grafton.
Least Favorite Prompt: Political Memoir or Self-Help
Least Favorite Book: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Bring Back: I like any prompt that is somewhat open ended (ex. a book that takes place during the summer). I don't like feeling stuck in a genre (ex. political memoir).
2017?: I have my list printed and ready!

Favorite prompt (did something get you out of your comfort zone in a refreshing way?) A Book About a Culture that You are Unfamiliar With
Favorite book (could be different from the prompt) Born a Crime
Least favorite prompt) A Book of Poetry. I hate poetry!!
