I enjoyed this story with its quirky characters and well-imagined world. It could be read on many levels, a child of very few years would enjoy it as a fairy tale but it kept my interest as well. I saw the movie years ago and don't recall much (if any) connection between the two, which is making me question my recollection. Not very much like the movie, bits and pieces were but it's a story where nothing happens and then everything happens and it is resolved all at once. I loved the woman who narrated the audio book. Her welsh accent and voices were great!

An utterly delightful and fantastical romp. I can't believe it's taken me this long to get around to reading it! It's been years since I watched the Studio Ghibli adaptation, I may have to watch it again now.
