What Members Thought

This is a difficult book to review for several reasons. The first is that it is so easy to make a judgment based simply on the basic premise -- do you want to spend several hundred pages with a 5-year-old in a tiny room, born into a reprehensible situation? As various friends of mine finished this book before me, I had some time to think about the premise before reading the text, and I wasn't sure it was a place I wanted to be. But fortunately, Donoghue walks the line skillfully between writing

I really enjoyed this book. My first time reading an adult book told in a 5 year olds point of view. How brave of Ma to figure out a plan to hopefully get she and Jack out of this room. Jack spent 5 years of his life in this room, only to find out later about his big world that he was not a part of. They each had their struggles to find their places "in the world"

Room is a wonderful book! I had put off reading this for quite a long time because I thought its effect would be claustrophobic. But it's not like that at all. Instead, it's as though we're seeing the world for the very first time, through the eyes of a 5-year-old boy. This amazing story is beautifully written, from the boy's point of view, and the characters, especially his intelligent, resourceful mother, really come alive. Now I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing the movie!

Now I wish I had not been so free with my 5 stars so I am giving Room a 5+! It is a book that consumed me. I went to sleep reading it & woke up this AM eager to finish it yet reluctant because I knew that Jack & Ma would be gone. Well, I now realize that they won't because like Little Bee, this story will remain in my heart. For those of you who are afraid to read this book, don't be. Even though it is about a horrible situation, you are viewing it through an adorable 5 yr old that sees the worl

I had high hopes for this book because of all the publicity it has gotten and although I didn't care for the beginning all that much, I give it 4 stars. It wasn't until I got to the part where Ma and Jack start planning their escape that I finally found some momentum in the story.
Overall, it made me think about the things that we do and see and experience on a daily basis that we take for granted and do not even give a second thought to, for example, walking on grass, seeing kids play at a play ...more

Although I found the voice of the 5 year old narrator initially quite annoying, I quickly grew fond of him. I love how the characters are flawed, and yet lovable, i couldn't help myself caring about them even at their worst, and the book will linger long in my memory. I would love to say more, but will save it so as not to give away any spoilers. Brilliant story, well told, Donoghue redeemed herself for me after "Landing", which unfortunately didn't do it for me.

I have had enough of books written from the point of view of a child. I admit there have been great books written that way (To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Sawer) and very good books (Peace Like a River). I enjoyed those books. I never would have made it through the first half of this novel if i wasn't reading it for book club. The primary issue that made me so reluctant to continue was the grammar of the child. He was five years old and had lived in a single room with his mother for all of his life.

Definitely a book that makes you think. I'm glad I didn't read any spoilers about the story in advance, which would have detracted from the book's impact. I'll be thinking about this one for a while.

I was suspicious that this book would be "gimicky" as it is told in the voice of a 5 year old boy. I got past that quickly, and found the perspective to be fresh and natural after I read for awhile. Told from his perspective, I really felt like I was there with him, seeing through his eyes. If you liked "The Curious Incident of the Dog in Nighttime" I am sure you would like this book.
