88432 Looks like we're done. I just finished First Lie Wins, which is on the NYT Bestseller List and I put it in the spreadsheet.

88432 I shifted the rows a bit so now we can input the reason that a book works for a color card.

88432 Great! Were you able to get onto the tracking sheet? I think I allowed you access but just wanted to check. You are welcome to put your color books on the Tracking Spreadsheet if you want.

88432 Thanks for all the weigh-ins on the spreadsheet. I found one that I used in the past and found it easy to use but a good way to plan what you are going to read.

88432 Good to hear about Nghi Vo. I loved Becky Chambers Wayfarer series not the monk ones so much. I agree that the spreadsheet is necessary for the mini's but I don't know that they are necessary for the regular books. The point of UNO is to read anything you want and we make it fit.

88432 I have a question for those who have played UNO before. 2 of my years we used a planning spreadsheet and last year my captain had us put our completion posts in our team thread. Then she and I input (I was co captain) in the Master Sheet. We also posted in the thread with books we expected to read. I found that way worked nicely and was low stress but I know sometimes people like to use spreadsheets. I maintain my own for planning purposes but I hate to duplicate work. Any opinions?

I loved Demon Copperhead! Such a unique voice and courageous character. It must be interesting reading it from another country. It is very specific to a particular region in the US but does have universal themes. I am planning on reading some Nghi Vo for UNO because they are short and were recommended by someone in one of my bookclubs. I also worked in a bookstore.

88432 Hello again.

I have sent friend requests to you all so I can verify your books read and that you have a Uno 2024 shelf set up. Please accept my friend requests. Also, Alison could you please set up your UNO_2024 shelf?

Looking forward to hearing from you all. During the challenge, we request that you check in at least once a week but you are welcome to chat more often. Part of the fun of this challenge is getting to know new people and learn about new books.

At this time, it is important to check in as soon as you can since there is a waiting list for team positions.

Please feel free to ask any questions. My co-captain, Tiffany, and I will do our best to answer them and have resources we can turn to when we don't have your answer.

Talk soon!

88432 Welcome to Team Queen Ravenna's Kir Royale. Our team seems made for me. In case you don't know, Queen Ravenna is Snow White's evil stepmother and a Kir Royale is a champagne cocktail made with champagne and Chambord. In my younger years it was a drink I enjoyed when I wanted to feel a little sophisticated. And funnily, my maiden name was White so a Snow White reference is appropriate.

This is my fourth year playing Uno and my first year as Captain. Last year I was a co-captain. I live in Ohio in the midwest of the US with my orange tabby, Tiger, and have a daughter in college. My life has changed a bit in the last few months so I would classify myself as retired. I read a lot, belong to 4 book clubs, knit, sing in my church choir and am about to start some fun Continuing Ed classes and planning some travel in the next few months.

I read mostly fiction, Thrillers and Mystery being favorites, as well as Literary Fiction, some romance, some fantasy and some speculative, distopian fiction. One of my favorite genres is Time Travel and I see several new books out there I might be interested in.

Please introduce yourselves and tell us about where you're from, any personal details you would care to share, whether you have done UNO before, what kind of books you like to read and what are some of your favorite books from last year.

My favorites were: The Winners by Fredrick Backman, The River We Remember by William Kent Krueger, Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt and Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano.

88432 These are the cards we must match this month (carried over from the spreadsheet in message 1.)

3 - 6
4 - 9
5 - 5
6 - 9
7 - 6
8- 8
9 - 6
skip - 1
rvs - 0 ( A good way to check this is to go to one of your teammate's profiles, click on their read books and select compare books and it will show books on your list and their list that match.)

Color cards

📕 red

7

📘 blue

📗 green

📒 yellow

I like to start by identifying who is going to read what for the color cards. So if you have something that works for one of these please note it in a message in this thread. It is a good idea to knock these out early in the month before we get the Mini Challenge in the middle of the month.

Planning Spreadsheet:

Important
*Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count.

Thursday 1 February 2024
San Francisco 1am
London 9am
New York 4am
Mumbai 2.30pm
Tokyo 6pm
Sydney 8pm

*Books must be more than 100 pages in length. If it is a Childrens book or a graphic novel, we need to verify it is more than 25,000 words on arbookfind.com.

*Your finished books need to be on your Uno shelf AND marked as "read" for them to count.

* Please make notes of how your book may count. The more options we have the better! (Letters used in UNO are Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and of course if another team member has read the book before we can use as a reverse.

*I will be adding a Tracking Spreadsheet in the next day or so. We will use it for our planning and marking completed books. If you are not comfortable with spreadsheets, you are welcome to post a completion post in this thread, referencing all the cards the book can be used for.

For colored cards, the cover needs to be 50% or more of the color. You can ask us in this thread for our opinion, or use this colour tool: https://labs.tineye.com/color/ to get an idea. If in doubt, ask me or our co-captain.

* This is a social challenge, not a competitive one. We'd love to get points, but the main aim of the game is to have fun, read lots and get to know each other :)

Where can you see the spreadsheet of who is signed up?
Jan 11, 2024 06:01PM

88432 I just finished The Winners (Beartown, #3) by Fredrik Backman which was first published in Swedish and I input it in the spreadsheet. It is also third in the series if it is needed there.

88432 I agree, I have really enjoyed being on this team! This is the only challenge I do on Goodreads because I don't think any can be better. (Plus I get obsessed with this challenge and it takes me months to recover. LOL) I really enjoyed being a co-captain this year for the first time and will have to wait to decide if I want to be captain next time around. But I wish I could still be with this team because you all rocked it! Have a great year and hope to see you all next year!

88432 I am 30 pages from being done with my book club pick, A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole . In one scene the MC passes out in the street in a white smock and is referred to as a dead whale. It might stretch to fit the narwhal. I should have it done by tomorrow afternoon, if not tonight. I'll think about whether it fits any other prompts.

88432 SS updated to here. I think all we have left is the Narwhal prompt, which Annalisa is reading a long book for. If anyone has a book that would work sooner, please let us know. Great work all!

88432 I have a book club book I am struggling with that I may or may not finish by 4pm Sunday so I can't commit to any more books right now. If anyone else has a book set in the US or Canada, that they plan to read in the next day, please let us know. If not, we will just use Ann's.
