I wish there was a like button. Thank you, I think you're spot on.

73030 I've sped through this in a couple of days and I'm determined to finish it tonight. I'm really enjoying it but I do think there are some tiny plot holes which annoy me.
Nov 28, 2013 05:49PM

73030 I'm not saying it doesn't affect our reading, I've already said we may read things differently because of the things we experience as women. I'm just saying that we don't read specific things because of some silly signal our uterus is supposedly sending out. The idea that I read something for a different reason from someone else just because I'm a woman is preposterous to me.

73030 Agreed, I just couldn't get off my ranty feminist high horse long enough to do it. Damn authors and their rule breaking.

73030 Women like everything about SciFi that men like, it is that simple. We do not read things based on our gender. It is a million times more complicated than that.
Nov 28, 2013 02:57PM

73030 You could make the same argument about class, race, what fricking hair colour you have. Gender is a tiny part of who we are as people, suggesting that I like something different because I'm a woman is reductive. And our genitalia doesn't define our gender and it is our brains that produce hormones. I think it is a little sexist to come into a safe reading space for women and then query our reading habits.
Every single woman in this group is different, we may read things a little differently than you because of our experience as women, what I mean by this is that we experience sexism on a daily basis and are statistically higher at risk of things like rape so we are more likely to critique sexism and rape in books whereas a reader who has nod had these experiences may not pick up on it as easily.
You've come into a space for women who might like SciFi (it is just one aspect of the many we cover here) to suggest that our reasons for liking it must be different because we are women. It is very 'me Tarzan, you Jane' thinking and extremely sexist.
Nov 28, 2013 02:15PM

73030 That doesn't mean you remember the plots and technology just because you have a penis. Every reader is different, our genitalia doesn't dictate what we like in books. (It also doesn't dictate your gender but that's another conversation entirely).

I do not like specific things just because I am a woman. When it comes to SciFi I do however like characters, plots and technology.

73030 That's kinda sexist. What exactly do men find attractive about SciFi?
Nov 28, 2013 01:25PM

73030 Why do women have to like something different about SciFi than men do?

73030 Amy - I think you're right about classic Doctor Who but at the same time Moffat had said repeatedly that Classic had nothing to do with it so even those few nods were nice.

Michelle - I watched that five doctors thing after the show and although it was funny at first it was far too long and felt like were being hit over the head with one joke the whole time. It could have been better for me.

73030 John Hurt was wonderful. I loved seeing Capaldi even if it was only for a second. I want 10, 11 and Hurt to be together forever.

I have to nitpick some things, I still don't like Moffat but he is a much better writer than he is show runner, I'm sad that Rose wasn't Rose and 10 didn't get to see her. I'm worried about the numbering and the fact that unless Moffat screws with Who lore again Capaldi will be the last one.

I loved UNITs science girl, she was such a fangirl and the scarf rocked.

I really want to know what is up with Baker being the curator, I did like that moment though.

I may come back with more thoughts once I've had time to get over the insane emotions of this episode!

73030 I absolutely meant to read this and then life took over. It is absolutely my kind of book. (Also an extra shout out to Malinda Lo, I love her work).

I do hope to get to it eventually, when I do I'll jump into this old thread to discuss it with you, great to hear that you're enjoying it!

73030 The fact that you even use the words stereotypical woman are offensive. And you clearly are reading the wrong YA fic if you think that is all women are in stories. Please check your male privilege at the door and understand the she-geek rules regarding self-promotion.
Nov 13, 2013 07:37AM

73030 First of all - I don't think women in the Hunger Games are weak. They are strong and thankfully never portrayed as sexy.

Your description of your strong female leads as sexy objectifies them within a predominately male gaze and therefore prevents them from representing this strong independence that you supposedly seek. These women may fight well on the battlefields but if they are as objectifies as your description makes out then you are yet another male author promoting female dominance in the sexual space rather than promoting strong women across all fields. I find your description offensive and somewhat misogynistic.

May I remind you that she-geeks is a group made of predominately women to celebrate the books, graphic novels and manga that promote women in a positive light that is neither weak nor sexually objectified nor in strong positions only in relation to men. I'd appreciate it if your future posts and indeed your future publications respect the members of this group.

You're obviously reading the wrong YA and fantasy books if you see the women in them as weak and if your only examples are Twilight and the Hunger Games.

I also hope that you started this to generate an actual discussion and not promote your book as promoting your book is frowned upon here.
