73030 Preacher: Gone to Texas.

Anyone reading it this month?
Mar 03, 2014 07:21PM

73030 It's that time of the month again to open up recommendations for our next group read!

Theme for April: Mythology

Recommendations will be taken from March 1st - 14th - so be sure to get in early and suggest what you would like to see read!

Here's the guidelines for recommending books for new group members, and old hands alike:

1. Every month we read one comic book, one novel, and one manga. Comics and manga can fall under any genre, but please note that novels must fall under the heading of science fiction, fantasy, or horror (and any of their sub-genres).

2. Please recommend books that have not been previous group reads. You can see which books we've read previously here.

3. Be specific. Don't say "any book by ______". It won't be counted.

4. Please link your book in your thread so members can easily look it up.

5. Suggest a book that you think would be good for a large group discussion - that's the point of this group bringing us all together!

How voting works

We choose the top three in each category for the final vote from the 15th - 21st of the month based on how many votes it has.

1. All members can vote on a book/comic/manga they would like to read if somebody suggests it. Simply reply to the thread with "I'm voting for ______" or "VOTE: _____" and it will be counted. The books with the most votes get chosen to be put into the final three poll in the 3rd week of the month. Only comments with the word "vote" somewhere in it will be counted as such in order to avoid confusion.

2. Please only vote for a work ONCE. Multiple votes for the same works will not be counted.

3. You can change or modify your votes as many times as you'd like before the thread closes on the 14th.

4. In the case where two or more books are have equal votes, the book that was suggested first (as indicated by the timestamp on the thread) will enter the poll for the month.

All members do not have to read, recommend, or vote for all three genres - if you only want to suggest and read a novel, that's fine! We're a pretty diverse group here.

The poll with the top three chosen titles of each category will go live on March 15th. A message to all group members will be sent out when that commences.

Let's get recommending!

73030 As much as I wish we were finally gonna read a Trudi Canavan book the poll website is telling me that Fangirl by Rainbow Powell won by quite a large amount.
Feb 10, 2014 04:24PM

73030 I'd like to recommend Priestess of the White by Trudi Canavan. I really love her books and I've read them all but I read this one about six years ago and I'd love to revisit it.

73030 Sorry Grace, nominations closed yesterday. You can vote here https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/7... for the most poplar nominations.

73030 I'm going to recommend a little known novella called Good Eats. It is a quick and gripping read by a horror author called Elle Chambers. I don't think it is really on GR (the last I saw the page was quite blank but it is currently free on the Amazon store).
Jan 27, 2014 02:35PM

73030 Good Eats is a zombie novella by horror author Elle Chambers. It is free on Amazon until the 29th.

73030 Thank you so much Shannon, it really means a lot to me that you understand.
Jan 27, 2014 03:32AM

73030 So many nominations and votes, well done! I vote for Victorian Undead by Ian Edginton and Feed by Mira Grant.

Quite a few of our books are drawing for nomination to the polls at the moment so please keep nominating and voting!
73030 I found that I would be finding it boring and I'd put it down and then after a few minutes I was having to pick it back up because I wanted to know more. I did this over and over again. I loved the ending though!
Orphan Black (22 new)
Jan 24, 2014 01:56PM

73030 I finally got around to watching this. I had to marathon watch it because it was so gripping and intense. Not long to go until S2, thankfully!
Jan 24, 2014 01:54PM

73030 Thank you for starting this Jim.

73030 Now taking recommendations for the month of February! This thread will close on January 29th, commencing the polls!

Theme: Zombies

For our new members and those unfamiliar with how the books are picked every month, here are the updated guidelines. There are 3 selections that we read every month as a group. One comic book, one manga, one novel. Of course, not everyone here reads manga or novels so the choice to either read one selection or all three is completely up to you. The three final selections are picked from polls based on all of your recommendations in our monthly thread (like this one). Of each poll, there are only 3 nominations. Nominations are picked according to popularity so only comments with the word "VOTE" is considered a vote towards that recommendation. This is to clear up any confusion and make it straightforward about what's considered a vote. In the case where two or more books are equally praised, I will simply pick the suggestion that was posted first (by date, and if necessary, time). Here are other rules:

1.) Do recommend as many books as you like as long as it falls under these genres:
- any comic book
- any manga
- books that fall under fantasy or science fiction. Further examples: apocalyptic, post-apocalyptic, dystopian, outer space, futuristic, steampunk, medieval, dark fantasy, magic, superheroes, zombies, vampires, goblins... basically, anything epic and/or imaginary.
2.) Do recommend a book more than once as long as it hasn't been a previous read of the month. A book can be renominated for the polls.
3.) Do be specific. Saying "any book by ______" won't be counted.
4.) Do vote for as many recs as you like. Of course, don't vote for the same thing twice. (Fyi, any book you recommend is counted as a vote.)
5.) Do change or remove your vote(s) as many times as you like before this thread closes.
6.) If we decide to do a theme for a particular month, only recs that follows that theme will be counted.
7.) Lastly, please link your books so we can easily look it up (unless your book isn't listed by Goodreads then that's understandable. Just make sure to name the author).

After votes are collected, the three most popular comic books, novels, and manga will enter the polls. The three polls are held during the last week of the month, and results will be announced on the first day of the following month. Both moderators and members may start discussion threads based on our reads of the month. When participating in a discussion, make sure you state your checkpoint or announce SPOILERS so you don't ruin it for your fellow members. I think I pretty much covered everything. If there's something you're still unclear about, feel free to message one of us moderators!
Jan 24, 2014 11:02AM

73030 Well Natalie has already left so I can't really respond to her.

On behalf of the mods I would like to apologise to anyone who feels we have neglected the groups. We all have very busy lives and yes we may have still been updating on GR but it is certainly easier to click read on a book than do all of the work required to mod a group.

I can't speak of my fellow mods but I have two jobs, I'm studying on a full time course and I have multiple disabilities that often prevent me from being productive (also we were quieter over the holiday period, I think that one explains itself). It is a lot of work to mod a group and most people had given up on being involved in discussions long before we stopped updating them.

I do sincerely apologise for the lack of presence her lately, I'd like to promise that it will get better but if we put all of the effort in again and no one responds I can almost guarantee that we'll stop again.

I hope that everyone in this group will work as hard as we do try to to be a success.

73030 My problem is that the premise of the question is sexist. He could have asked us simply what we liked about SciFi but he turned it into a gender thing from the outset.
