73030 I picked up the first trade and then the single issues after that, I'm very glad for online shopping!

I read Bitch Planet last night and I am so in love with it. It made me want to cry and discuss the world at the same time.

73030 I am preparing myself to catch up on all the single issue comics I've bought but haven't read yet and out of interest separated them into two piles, the pile containing Image comics towers over the pile with DC, Marvel, Vertigo and Black Horse!

I've been getting these ones for a while:
Rat Queens,
Saga,
Sex Criminals,
Lazarus,
Velvet
Rocket Girl (a whole year between arcs!?)
Pretty Deadly (Image website says ongoing but the last we saw anything new was April)

I've picked up these ones based on front cover or it being talked about in here:
The Fade Out
Wayward
Imperial (but just the first issue because I'm unsure of it)
Alex + Ada (when Anna recommends something this much I know it's good!)
Drifter
ODYC

73030 I'm so glad my family aren't the only ones who have fake celebration days! Having both a dad in the forces and divorced parents means I've had a Christmas on a non-Christmas day nearly every year but this year's just feels extra special.

73030 In 2015 we're going to try out our first reading challenge for strong female protagonists.

You can set your own challenge and keep track of it on the main page as long as you make sure to set up a shelf and add all of the books relating to the challenge on that shelf for the whole year.

Let us know how many books you're going to aim for and if you want to set up your own threads in this folder to keep track of what books you've read and what you thought of them then please do.

73030 It's time again to open up recommendations for our next group read!

Theme for Jan: EPIC FANTASY

***Remember, the theme ONLY applies to our Themed Read option, which can be any type of read.
***You should still nominate un-themed comics, mangas and novels for our regular monthly reading.

For example, you can nominate reads as follows:

Comic -
Manga -
Novel -
Themed Read -

Recommendations are open until Dec 14th.

Here are the guidelines for recommending books for new group members and old hands alike:

1. Every month we read one comic book, one novel, and one manga. Comics and manga can fall under any genre, but please note that novels must fall under the heading of science fiction, fantasy, or horror (and any of their sub-genres).

2. Please recommend books that have not been previous group reads. You can see which books we've read previously here.

3. Be specific. Don't say "any book by ______". It won't be counted.

4. Please link your book in your thread so members can easily look it up.

5. Suggest a book that you think would be good for a large group discussion - that's the point of this group bringing us all together!

How voting works

We choose the top three in each category for the final vote from the 15th - 21st of the month based on how many votes it has.

1. All members can vote on a book/comic/manga they would like to read if somebody suggests it. Simply reply to the thread with "I'm voting for ______" or "VOTE: _____" and it will be counted. The books with the most votes get chosen to be put into the final three poll in the 3rd week of the month. Only comments with the word "vote" somewhere in it will be counted as such in order to avoid confusion.

2. Please only vote for a work ONCE. Multiple votes for the same works will not be counted.

3. You can change or modify your votes as many times as you'd like before the thread closes on the 14th.

4. In the case where two or more books are have equal votes, the book that was suggested first (as indicated by the timestamp on the thread) will enter the poll for the month.

All members do not have to read, recommend, or vote for all three genres - if you only want to suggest and read a novel, that's fine! We're a pretty diverse group here.
73030 I gave up Netflix for a month so I'm excited to be getting it back. I'm way behind on Arrow so I'll be using it to catch up on that. Also they've put season 3 of Borgia up.

73030 My family can't be together for Christmas so we've turned today (my little brother's 10th birthday) into Christmas day!
73030 Hey Caity, this is a great idea. I wonder how spread out the She-Geeks are.

I live in Glasgow, Scotland in a tiny flat with my girlfriend and our cat, Arya.

73030 As the compendium drew for December's read I thought I'd set up a buddy read for the entire comic here.
Dec 01, 2014 01:37AM

73030 Our STEAMPUNK theme read is Leviathan. I'm really excited to start this one.
Dec 01, 2014 01:34AM

73030 Our December read is The Lovely Bones. Who's in?
73030 Injustice! Who's reading this this month? How are you finding it? I'll admit I didn't even realise this was a comic and not just a game.

73030 Who's joining in with the December read, Hellsing vol 1? Have you read it before or is it a new title for you?
Nov 24, 2014 08:23AM

73030 This has rocketed to the top of my favourites.
Nov 19, 2014 07:00PM

73030 I am loving this so far, I'm just about to start Issue 3. The whole of volume 1 is available on Netgalley until the end of the month. It's a read now title so you don't even need to request it.

Doctor Who (147 new)

73030 As I said I have no idea why I'm not enjoying this season, I'm just not. Flatline was by far the best episode of the season so far, it was actually scary and interesting. There have been too many attempts at making the monsters have a sympathetic reason for acting that way (a path that most films and tv shows are going down) and I really hate that, I want my monsters to be really scary and awful and evil and not be explained away by being misunderstood or a giant egg.

I think Capaldi is doing an incredible job, although his doctor could stop insulting Clara every five minutes but that's in the writing and another reason why Moffatt makes me mad. I think Clara is pretty decent even though she's been given some horrible storylines the entire time she's been around.

I probably just had really high expectations that the new season and new doctor never had an chance of meeting. I was so excited when Capaldi was announced because he is everything that I felt was missing in Smith and my doctor is older and struggles with the fact that he is basically a mass murderer responsible for the deaths of millions of beings in the bid to save one planet.

EDIT: I forgot to say that I agree with NotQuiteAllHere about having new monsters, although I'm not liking the direction they're going with them I am so, so, so glad they haven't (yet) reused the usual ones.

Also, I went back an reread some of the earlier posts and my how I have changed in two years, two years ago I was still full of so much enthusiasm and I even defended Moffatt, I hate Moffatt so much now I can't imagine ever having liked him.

I still get so excited every time I'm about to watch the show and I enjoy it well enough during it but I just don't feel like (other than Flatline) they've been memorable or scary. I used to always have theories about the season long plots (Melody/River) but I hadn't even given Missy a second thought until today.

73030 Has anyone been watching the new season? Although I love Capaldi as an actor I'm glad we're back to a dark, twisty doctor I just sort of hate this season. I can't put my finger on what it is about it but I just really don't like it. I'm still tuning in every Saturday but at the end of the episode I just feel kinda meh about it.
