721 Penguin seems to have a bit of a deal going on with some of its Australian ebooks. I just bought Only the Animals and Foreign Soil for a pretty good price.

Lucky you! I just added that to my TBR a few days ago. I'm very keen to see whether a Debra Oswald novel is as good as her screenwriting.
721 I've just started The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, which I am really expecting to enjoy based on all the super-positive reviews in this group.

721 EXCHANGE: I gave The Signature of All Things 5★ and other readers enjoyed Claire of the Sea Light. I enjoyed it too, but for me it was a 3★ read.

RETURN: I gave Wolf Hall / Bring Up the Bodies 5★ and I picked A Place of Greater Safety as my return, but it's 21 January and I don't realistically think I can finish a 750 page book by the end of the month. Tackling this problem laterally, I have picked up The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher and read the eponymous story. Different, but I liked it. The rest of the collection will have to wait till I get a full copy.

Challenge complete.

Double gasp!!

I read that a few years ago and I liked it, although I wouldn't say it rocked my world BUT it's one of those books that pops back into your head time and time again. In fact, I was thinking about it just this past weekend.

Loved this book - can see why it was the 2014 GR SciFi book of the year

I'm very curious about this one. I'm not a fan of sci-fi, but this sounds interesting (and I adore Matt Damon).

I hadn't read the book, but I watched episode 1. Strangely my TV guide is showing something different for tonight... Not sure what is going on.

Wow, B, that sounds unusual but amazing.

721 I want to share this article I read on the weekend and can't get out of my head. http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-ent... Really sad. I haven't read any of her work yet, but have had 2 novels on my TBR; Pomegranate Soup (which has been sitting on my physical bookshelf for a few years) and The Margaret Thatcher school of beauty which I only came across more recently. Is anyone else familiar with Marsha Mehran's work?

721 I've just had a good browse at my local charity shop and picked up All the Birds, Singing, Frog Music and one by Amitav Ghosh that I hadn't heard of before - The Circle of Reason. $8.50 in the 3 for 2 offer. Gotta ❤ the Salvos.
What next? (3013 new)

721 When I was at uni I worked in the Banquets dept at Wrest Point Casino. Although I was way down the pecking order I contrived a way to meet (wait on) Bob Hawke, who was my hero at the time. Also breathed the same air as a few royals over the years.

Keira Knightly or Jennifer Ehle?

Dare I read your review?? I'm at 46% and am just now finding that it is picking up a bit (just a bit...)

721 My most highly anticipated 2015 read would have to be The Mirror and the Light, the final part of the Thomas Cromwell trilogy. I had always thought it was going to be published in about Sept 2014, but alas nothing yet.

I do know what you mean - it took me about 3/4 of the novel to warm to him. But unlike you, in the end I did (warm to him) and gave it 4 stars, from memory. I'm not in a rush to read the sequel though.
721 Ryan wrote: "Some of you guys are very fast. I'm half way through The Narrow Road to the Deep North."

I think you started just after me, and I'm only at about 20%. There's nothing wrong with it, but for me it's a bit 'putdownable' (i.e. to go and do something else). But if I spent less time on the computer, I'd probably have read a bit more of it.

Me too. In my top 5 for 2014. Actually I've enjoyed all his books so far.

721 I might be late, but I'm not sorry as it has given me the opportunity to trawl through the Aussie Readers' best picks from 2014 to set myself a juicy challenge. 2015 is looking pretty good already!

From the End of Year Top 5 books of 2014 thread https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... I have chosen 23 books to focus on in 2015, in amongst other challenges, whims etc. I already own 17 of the 23, so I'll probably lean towards those first to make a dent in my TBR pile, and catch up with the rest later in the year.

721 Carolyn can you give us a few examples of the gems sitting on that bookcase please? I can see a couple of Nesbos and a Robb, but my eyes aren't good enough for the rest!
