She's great! I am trying to put together a buddy read in this group for 2018 of the first Hercule book, The Mysterious Affair at Styles. If you have a chance, I hope you might sign up. (advertisement alert lol)

58421 After reading and enjoying 2 Agatha Christie novels this year, I'd like to read more next year. Starting with The Mysterious Affair at Styles (Hercule Poirot #1) by Agatha Christie

Is anyone interested in discussing it in 2018 sometime?

58421 Yes the ending made the whole book worth the price of admission lol

I totally agree. The middle was necessary but rather boring.

58421 I *was* surprised Mrs. Hubbard was the famous actress. What a great actress indeed lol

58421 I finished the book! Wow -- what an ending! Wild and exciting. I had a hard time believing Poirot would let them all get away with murder (he's so pious) but in a way, it makes sense. They all endured a horrible tragedy at Cassetti's hands.

Overall, I liked it though it dragged in some parts IMO.

58421 Is it just me or was the long evidence section rather tedious to read? Maybe I am the only one who felt that way, but for like 9 chapters nothing happened but talk talk talk!

I am hoping to finish the book tonight. I'm so close.

58421 For some reason, the Count & Countess raise my suspicions. Maybe because the Count didn't want Poirot to talk to his wife until Poirot absolutely insisted. They both seemed cagey.

As for Poirot knowing Ratchett is Cassetti. That's Hercule for ya! lol He's never wrong.

58421 I too love the setting. Christie is the master (mistress?!) of the "locked room" mystery! I am trying to read other books too but this one keeps pulling me back.

58421 I got this just now from Wikipedia:

By 1930, Agatha Christie found Poirot "insufferable", and by 1960 she felt that he was a "detestable, bombastic, tiresome, ego-centric little creep". Yet the public loved him and Christie refused to kill him off, claiming that it was her duty to produce what the public liked.

LOL

58421 I started this book about an hour ago and have already made it this far. I am liking it although there are sooo many characters to remember. I'm getting them a bit confused. I saw the original movie (from the 70's?) and so I know how it ends but "seeing" (reading!) the build-up is fascinating.

I like Poirot and his "little gray cells" lol But I read Agatha Christie herself wasn't a fan of his, oddly enough. I read that she just kept writing him because her fans loved him. I will have to research to be sure this is accurate.

58421 I have the His Dark Materials series on my shelf and was actually planning to read at least the first one next year. So when is the buddy read officially for the series & may I join in?
