52781 I have to say that I liked Dogs of Riga much more than Faceless Killers and it sparked an interest in my learning more about the soviet block countries and what happened to them. I read a YA about a lithuanian family who became political prisoners, and then a bio about a woman sent to kasakastan as a political prisoner - wish it was an era in history we learnt about more

52781 there really is no difference - the great thing about GR is that anyone can start a group about anything they want. Naomi and I had talked about starting this group earlier this year, but with our work schedules and other stuff, that didn't materialize until a couple of months ago. But different groups also focus on different things - I believe Ken runs the other group (correct me if i'm wrong)

52781 listening to A Place of Execution - really liking it so far - I have about 5 hours to go, so about 1/3 of the way left - will be interesting to see how it all turns out

52781 aight guys, this is definately getting a bit heated - I love that people feel passionate about their country and what they believe in, but its starting to get to a stage where other participants may start feeling uncomfortable and I don't want that. If you guys want to continue this in another thread, feel free, but let's get back to the main topic of this one which was Naomi's question about what language to study

52781 i've been following both sides of this conversation and see where the different view points are coming from.

The way I see it, i think Jim has that unique perspective of being an outsider in such as isolationist type culture whereas Fizzy grew up there and so potenially has a greater potential for bias towards your homeland and how you were raised - you might not even acknowledge it, but it is there. But Jim has lived in Finland for close to 12 years now (correct me if i'm wrong) - so I would assume that he probably has a good insight into the politics of the area

52781 yeah, someone at work does - I think it was published in something we had to read, or got given and it became a running joke
