4170 This is specific to Australians (as far as I'm aware)

Apple's iBook store is giving away for FREE, the first book in a series in many genres.

Including S&L favourites Mark Lawrence (Red Sister), John Scalzi (Old Man's War) and Chuck Wendig (Blackbirds)

also Talon by Julie Kagawa
The Tiger and the Wolf by Adrian Tchaikovsky

On days like this I fill my iPad up with books to try :-)

4170 I have started reading Paper Girls, Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughan.

This is a weirdly brilliant story that I have no idea where it's going, but I'm going along for the ride.

I am about to start Manifest Destiny, Vol. 1: Flora & Fauna. From my understanding this is a historically accurate telling of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Maybe ;-)

I disagree with that. There is a lot of sci-fi that uses ideas that assumes a scientific hypothesis is possible, for the sake of the story, where it is almost likely that that hypothesis is going to be impossible.

i.e time travel to the past, FTL spaceships, teleportation of large objects

But "most" people would put those stories firmly into the sci-fi genre. Soft sci-fi, but still sci-fi.

I think I'd feel safer with AI in charge of the launch codes, than the semi-intelligent baboon that now is :-?

4170 Phil wrote: "I love the people at your party Dara but you know the group's going to need to be bailed out in the morning."

That is the very definition of a great Bucks'/Hens' Night ;-)

I'll add Logen Ninefingers to my group. The Cantina can get a bit wild.

Dara wrote: "Hahah, just the name of “hen” makes me think of old fables and Mother Goose’s nursery rhymes so then I think about old women knitting and baking pies. It just doesn’t scream “wild party” to me but it’s kind of cute at the same time? I dunno, my brain is weird."

Don't let the name fool you. Australia has a thing called "Bachelor and Spinster Balls". (Usually shortened to B&S Ball). Despite the quaint old fashioned name, it is designed for single men and women to get together and have wild parties full of drinking, loud music, dancing and hooking up.

yep 2nd half definitely pushes it firmly into sci-fi

4170 Dara wrote: "Dear lord. “Hen party”? That sounds incredibly dowdy and lame, hahah. (Sorry, Brits/Aussies)"

dowdy and lame? :-0 You've obviously never been on an Aussie Hens' Night. Aussie "girls" know how to Paaar-teeee ;-) and usually are much naughtier than the men's Bucks Night. lol

4170 They're known as a Buck's Night (or Party) here in Oz. Hen's Night (or Party) for the women.

For my Buck's Night/Party I'd invite Han and Chewie. Where else but a "wretched hive of scum and villainy" to hold it. The Mos Eisley Cantina on Tatooine.

Any damage we do would improve the decor ;-)

4170 We had this same discussion when Reamde was an alt-pick. It probably fell short of being true sci-fi.

I'm 50% of the way through Zeroes and though it isn't yet sci-fi, I am seeing hints towards it becoming sci-fi.

4170 You are having the reaction the author intended.

Reagan is a nasty internet troll who has no filters and a warped sense of justice.

She does occasionally show a spark of humanity.

4170 How Star Wars Conquered the Universe: The Past, Present, and Future of a Multibillion Dollar Franchise is a great look at how Star Wars got made.

The story we know and love could have been very different.

There is a haunted house not much further on from where you finished. It never gets really creepy though.

I ended up enjoying the book despite not really feeling it in the first section.

As others have stated, the real horror of this book is the racism the main characters have to endure.

4170 A great, 'smart' sci-fi series.

Try it Trike, you'll love it. It has a cold war spy thriller vibe.

It's even set in Berlin and has it's own version of Checkpoint Charlie
