Jamie Harris is a man.

He is listed as Eustace Hunt in the IMDB page for "Lovecraft Country".

"How do you pronounce your last name?"
Vernor Vinge: "I pronounce it as rhyming with the word 'stingy.' "

I can't believe Veronica lemmed A Fire Upon the Deep, that was my favourite S&L book of 2016.

I'm the same. I like the characters and I'm interested in their struggles against racism.

But as soon as the story goes into the horror sections It just loses me.

I'm about 40% in and it's about a 3 star book so far.

It is shocking how white (and non-diverse culturally) rural Australia was (and still, mostly, is)
The White Whale (32 new)

4170 I let my white whale swim off years ago.

I have had War and Peace sitting on my bookshelf for 32 years. I have started it several times and never got more than a few hundred pages in before giving up.

I know I will never read it. In my limited time left, I just would rather read something less boring ;-)

4170 Sean will update it eventually.

It will be officially announced within the next 24 hours. Patreon members have been told just a few hours ago (one of the perks)

One of the mods will put a book announcement up tomorrow.

4170 Rivers Solomon is 30

How do I know? They wrote this piece about their diabetes in 2016
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/12/op...

At that time they "had been diabetic for about 6 years, since age 22. "
4170 Evolution seems to be most misunderstood by those that don't believe in it. Creationists etc. The idea of a completely random process with no "intelligent design" and no end purpose confuses them.

I can believe that a baby John might call himself Jommy instead of Johnny and the nickname stuck. I've heard of similar things happening.

So he's a Marty Sue ;-)

Wow. You and Jenny (Reading Envy) are definitely super human power readers :-)

465 total books (234 & 231) between you for the year, so far, blows my mind.
4170 John Petty isn't an old name. I know lots of Johns and lots of Pettys. John may be out of favour for millenials naming their kids, but it is still a common name for the previous generation. As much as my name.

As far as Jommy. I'm not sure if this is a spoiler or not. So just in case (view spoiler)

4170 How about 7th Sigma by Steven Gould ? It fits most of your description.

7th Sigma by Steven Gould

4170 The name sounds familiar, but I don't recognise any of his books.

Laumer would probably say he was "inspired by", instead of "cribbed from" Vogt ;-)

I see he wrote a few books for "The Avengers". No not that Avengers kids ;-) It was a British spy show. That was one of my favourite shows from the 60s.

Another reason the US needs stronger employee protection.

Amazon Australia wouldn't get away with mistreating (or underpaying) employees. Here minimum wage is a safety net, not a starting point for wages.

Sorry for derailing this thread with my socialist rants ;-)
