Rio Rancho has been growing faster than any other community in the northern half of New Mexico. The thousands of identical homes are separated by dozens of identical shopping centers so that everyone can be near their favorite big box store.

4170 As usual, when reading S+L forums, I wind up down some rabbit hole. Here's today's hole:

https://egorschamber.com/tvhorrorhosts/

A database of horror hosts. Apparently there was a tv show circa 1975-76 in Albuquerque hosted by Captain Space, an alien...

Born on a planet far away,
Captain Space landed here one day;
Captain Space really must seem
The strangest cat that you've ever seen.
Captain Space don't cost six million dollars,
He's the man with the strangest powers;
Oh, Captain, stay here on earth,
We all know what you're really worth.
Captain Space, you're the guy for me,
Floating around in my TV;
I wanna see what you can't see,
A space cadet's what I'm bound to be...

I never saw this show, but the fellow who played Captain Space is Dave DeWitt, author of numerous books on fiery foods, the self described "Pope of Peppers", and host of the annual National Fiery Foods and BBQ Show in Albuquerque. The show was canceled last year and this year due to the pandemic. Maybe in 2022. He also wrote The Mute Strategy, "the ultimate novel of the mysterious animal mutilations" in New Mexico, required sci-fi reading if you live in this state.

Ok, back to the Albuquerque Door

I couldn't quite put my finger on what I felt as I read this book, but I think Trike nailed it. It's an amusing weekend creature feature. I don't recall any local creature feature tv shows. We get broadcast tv from Albuquerque NM and it's only in recent years that one of the local stations broadcasts Svengoolie (probably not the same Svengoolie that Trike mentioned). This Saturday was Earth vs The Spider starring a tarantula and a bunch of clowns.

Anyway, The Fold was entertaining, but lacks substance. That's not a bad thing. It just means it's not a book I'm likely to re-read.
