40475 feel free to come up with things we don't need to talk about, too--

40475 yeah, it's too good a group to die...

post some questions someone.

Michael?

Caris?
40475 Oh, Patrick White is a very interesting author. I've not read that one.

That reminds me of a novel I read a few summers ago, knowing nothing going into it (it was also missing a back over)...will look for it now...

40475 if not objective, at least consistent--

;-)

40475 I think the number of stars reflects our enjoyment of a given book, so 5 stars from you makes sense on that particular book.
That said, it's also true that everyone uses the star rating a little differently, sometimes explaining their system on their profile page.

The beauty here is that a book does receive such a wide range of reactions, and the point is simply to explain in your review why your reaction was what it was.
40475 I thought non-traditional in college meant not college-age?
(or are you saying that's the traditional def'n?)

40475 well the solution is simple then: you should read only when you WANT to sleep...

;-)

40475 yes, I'd like a vacation just to do that...

40475 I've never participated in such a forum, Dawn (either as a participant or an author), but yes, I can see why that would be annoying.

It reminds me of my rule when I teach creative writing and we workshop a student's story: the student is not allowed to speak while we talk about his or her work. (S/he can afterward). Otherwise, all he does is to jump in and explain and defend. And no one benefits--not the readers and least of all, the writer.

40475 I read before I go to sleep, I read in the afternoon on the weekends, when I'm waiting...must have book, always!

40475 sounds awful.

and hypocritical besides
(not to mention bullying, etc.)

40475 oh, so the bee made it to a bookbag...

yeah, the designs are all pretty boring.
Jan 22, 2011 10:25AM

40475 it wasn't a joke, but it never went anywhere. It's not meant to be for the site, but for a T-shirt or something. It won the poll and we've heard nothing about it since.

40475 sometimes the very best reviews are those, Ian.

I think we feel grateful to someone who's been so honest, revealing. It's generous.

40475 Oh yes. Big-time Ugly: that Bee.
40475 We once had horses, just for the summer, which I loved.
We also had sheep one summer (this was in Nova Scotia, when I was a kid).
I didn't like the sheep because they shat everywhere and they had worms and I couldn't go barefoot as I was used to doing.

Never had goats. Might want to now.
Am gonna start with chickens and bees tho ;-)

well, there is a difference between best reviewers list (most votes) and top reviewers (most reviews).

That sounds like a strategy for the top reviewers list. That list doesn't interest me as (for me) it's not about how many I write but how good/engaging they are. (that said, I know I put nowhere near the effort in that some reviewers do. or, I do, but only on certain reads).

40475 Ala, post a link to one of your fave reviews and we'll vote for it!
Jan 17, 2011 05:06PM

40475 well, the Best Reviewer was for one week; during that week I was ranked 14th in most votes. That was early on in my tenure on goodreads, I'm afraid I've sunk far below the ranking bottom ever since...

40475 I did however fully participate in Ginnie-Gate. That was differnt imo, a case where a prolific plagiarist needed to be stopped.
