35559 Yikes...I don't know... I feel like they will probably have to be described as mermaids at least once (like in Harry Potter)...

35559 Discussion Questions December 2

Chapters 1-3

1. Why did you decide to read this book? Have you read other books by Neil Gaiman? Did someone recommend it to you?

I originally thought about reading this book because it was a BOM and I wanted the TT points. Then, upon further investigation, I discovered that quite a few of my friends *on goodreads and out in the world* had read it and loved it. I have only read The Ocean at the End of the Lane and I reeeeaaaally wasn't a fan, so I was a bit skeptical going into this, but so far I am REALLY enjoying it!!!

2. In the first chapter we're introduced to some of Shadow's fellow prison inmates - Low Key Lyesmith, the Iceman, and Sam Fetisher. Do you think any of these chracters will play a part in the rest of the book or were they just background flair?

I think they will be back, even if only in snippets of Shadows memory. In these first few chapters alone, this doesn't strike me as the type of book where Gaiman introduces us to meaningless characters.

3. What do you think of Mr. Wednesday? I think I caught a few hints about who he really is - anyone else have an idea?

I really like him :) He's kind of a scallywag and I find him entertaining. I agree with the previous comments about who he probably is. (view spoiler) I looked on Wikipedia after the Bilquis scene but QUICKLY exited out when I realized there would be too many spoilers. I plan on doing A LOT of research on this book after I finish.

4. What are you thoughts on Laura, her infidelity and her return from the dead to protect Shadow? Do you think she is one of Shadow's crazy dreams that he's been getting?

I don't like her, I don't trust her, not even in ghost form. I agree with Imke, she seems like she is there to distract him from his ultimate goal, whatever that may be.

5. There seems to be a lot of interesting things being set up even in these early chapters, what have you found most intriguing in the opening scenes of the book?

I LOVE the "Coming to America" sections. This is more format and not so much content, but I am listening to the full cast audiobook and it is AWEEEESOOOOME!!!! All the voices of the different characters? It's like watching *or listening* to the movie and it's FANTASTIC!

35559 Ps Our NORMAL Tower Teams goals are only worth 5 pts, so let's prioritize these holiday goals -- ESPECIALLY, because we have a time limit.

Karen is currently working on Me Before You which has a red cover. Anyone got any leads on cookies?

I'm a little pissed there aren't cookies on the cover of Megan's most recent completed read Treachery in Death (In Death, #32) by J.D. Robb Treachery in Death...I feel like cookies go perfectly with stilettos and a knife...On days when I am feeling MY most maniacal, I sit in my living room with all of those things, plus dead eyes.
