I'm looking forward to this one, which I decided to read based on 2 things: the title (the word "devious") and the beautiful blue cover..."

Hoopla and Overdrive are digital websites that my library uses. There is no waiting on Hoopla, just a limit of 8 borrows a month.

Looking forward to reading this too!

Thanks, Shannon. Being my first time in a team challenge, I needed that! With all the rules, classes, negative points for this and that, it seems stressful.

I’d be interested in doing the Illuminae series. Can we do Illuminae starting June 11? And then figure out a date for the other 2 later.

35559 Winterblaze by Kristen Callahan

Finished May 18, 422 pages

Characters - Winston Lane, Poppy Ann Ellis, Daisy, Mary Chase, Jack Talent, Jones, Lena, Ian Ranuf

Possible elements for classes - GIM or Ghost in machine, an immortal able to leave their body in spirit form and drift to any room.

One character can freeze or unfreeze water, objects, people.

Demon killed a character and used their blood to take on their form and impersonated them. Then the body disintegrated and turned into black spiders.
35559 8. Not right away. I think Herta is between a rock and a hard place. She is scared and also being female, Herta’s job opportunities are limited. I do sympathize with Herta because she thought she would finally be able to work as a doctor and heal people. Then, she finds out the truth.

9. I hope Caroline and Paul will meet again. Paul is famous and so not likely to be killed. Having a friend or family member in a war zone would never be an easy thing to deal with. I would be worried constantly.

10. I can understand Kasia’s feelings of guilt. But really it is the sad situation they are living in that is to blame. I feel badly for them and these are the most difficult chapters for me to read.

11. Not sure. I am hoping they will be reunited.

12. I don’t think I would handle this situation well at all. Fortunately, I never had to. Kasia has suffered a lot in a short time. I really do feel for her!

13. This storyline will not go well. I thought this as soon as their friendship developed. But I hope I am wrong!

14. Caroline is definitely trying to do all that she can for those in need! She is very principled. It is a break for me reading her chapters. She is living a life so different from the other 2 women. I admire her ability to call out racism when she sees it. She is able to with her money and status. Many others aren’t so lucky.
35559 Nanci wrote: "It never gets easy reading about man's inhumanity to man."

I have been putting off reading this book for that reason. But I think the different perspectives are helping me get through this story. If we were following just Kasia, It might become too overwhelmingly sad for me.
35559 1. I’m not sure yet. Lilacs are fragrant flowers that bloom in Spring. They symbolize first love or an old flame. I had to look that up. LOL they are considered hearty and versatile flowers. So I will say that may apply to the girls, being hearty and versatile.

2. I am finding the book very interesting because of the 3 perspectives. All 3 women represent different ages, classes, nationalities and countries. They are all 3 intelligent, resourceful women.

3. For me it is easier to follow by separating each character by chapter. Each chapter is its own contained story.

4. I am wondering this myself. He definitely does care about Kasia and worries about her when he sends her on missions. I am thinking/hoping Nadia and her mother has been taken to a safer place.

5. I was shocked when I read that scene between Herta and Heinz. And when Ilsa walks in and does nothing, yes, I felt sorry for her. Herta was the last person I thought would be in that kind of situation.

6. Not sure. Paul, being French, has a different attitude toward life, love, and marriage than American Caroline does.

7. I am also feeling a whole lot of emotions. I think this is good. Because it means I am invested in the story. And want to read more!

35559 Thanks so much for working so hard on the challenge! The classes requirements confuse me. But I have a few fantasy books coming up and will try to figure out if they might fit. I’ll be doing 2 BOM and writing DQs and doing 12 buddy reads in May and June. I’ll try to get us points for that.
35559 Hi Vicki and Elen! The book is available on Hoopla. So I can read it at any time. Looking forward to reading this!

35559 There are a lot of books in this series and I have heard good things. Just don’t see the movie based on the book Snowman. I heard that wasn’t good at all!

Jo Nesbo isn’t on my Hoopla app. But it is on overdrive.
