35559 I’ve already read My Lovely Wife. But I am definitely in for The Better Sister. I love Burke and have that on my tbr list. I will have to look the other books up. I don’t know anything about them.
35559 I will try to stay focused and read the book Severance by Ling Ma today. I have started the audio. That way I can do things around the house with my wireless headphones and won’t waste a minute! LOL

Sounds like you are off to a great start, DeVann and Laura!
35559 I ended up skimming to the end to see if I liked the ending. The book was okay. I agree, Brooke with the feeling of light fantasy/magical realism. And I guess that’s not my thing. I got bored. And yes, Ursa definitely came off as whiny too often. I did find it too silly in the beginning that 2 adults couldn’t get 1 little girl to the police. The ending was predictable, I thought.

Hoping you two enjoyed the book more than I did. The writing was good, the story just wasn’t for me.
35559 I finished. I was both surprised and a little disappointed.

You were right about James killing Edwin. This was a little disappointing, too predictable. But the fact Patrick knew and was helping Madeline did surprise me.

And Patrick! I thought he might have been murdered, pushed. Not sure I believe he could kill himself. What do you think? The question of whether Alison would go back to him was definitely answered.

And Carl was the biggest surprise of all. I knew he was worse than we first thought. And I knew something was up when he wouldn’t let Alison look at his computer. But he was a sick puppy/sex addict with crazy fetishes! LOL Alison was a mess but Carl was even worse. Did you see that ending coming?

I had fun discussing the book. I’ve already read Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens , which I loved, btw. And I’ve read She Lies in Wait (DCI Jonah Sheens, #1) by Gytha Lodge , which was okay, imho. But definitely up for finding another book to buddy read!
35559 I read through chapter 20 today.

I did not notice the difference between Madeline’s story and James’ story, Julie. Good catch!

I really do think Alison is too stupid to live! LOL I knew the game of hide and seek was a terrible idea. I did think Carl may have been behind Matilda’s disappearance. But he lost it so thoroughly and Matilda said she saw nobody. So now I am wondering if Alison is such a mess that Carl doesn’t have to mess with her to make her seem unfit.

And Patrick being arrested is no surprise. The surprise is that it did not happen sooner. Do you think Alison has dumped him for good? I am not so sure since she has such terrible taste in men.

Talking about men. All the men in the book are no prizes. Even though Edwin was horribly physically abusive, Carl got a vasectomy without telling Alison. Taking control of whether they would have more children. And Patrick is a rapist. Maybe not the same as Edwin, but still “shades” of Edwin, I think.

I will read to the end tomorrow. This book has really kept me engrossed!

I think I would be like Jo and be a bit disbelieving of Ursa's "story". I am enjoying all the ..."

I got to chapter 12 but can’t get into the book. It’s sweet and heartwarming, which may be the problem. LOL Yes, Ursa is an alien but the book isn’t very sci-fi ish. I will probably start to skim a bit. I know, I’m cheating! :)
35559 Brooke wrote: "Thanks, Laura! Should be about the same, but thankfully to better places. :-)"

WOW, Brooke! Very happy for you!
35559 Laura wrote: "Woot, woot; Friday is getting closer!

Is it too early to know what you all are reading?

( I admit.. I have no idea yet!)"

I started thinking about that today. But there are so many books to choose from! I want to read something that I can finally clear off my shelves.
35559 I’m on track to start tomorrow too.
35559 Brooke wrote: "I finished this one a couple of days ago, but I haven't been in front of my computer much. My best friend who lives in Portland, OR has been visiting and just left a little while ago. We had a grea..."

Sounds like you had a great time! Nothing better than dessert and wine to celebrate!

I finished too. I kept vacillating between 3 and 4 stars. I felt generous but the book is really 3.5 to me. Mostly because there were times I felt a little bored. The story could have been more exciting. The historical detail was interesting. But at times it felt dry like Harmon just wrote her research notes verbatim. And I agree, Brooke, it was a little confusing (view spoiler) I am glad you posted, Brooke. I know you read historical fiction more than I do. And wanted to know how this book compares to other historical fiction books.
35559 Brooke wrote: "I made a dent in this one yesterday - I think I made it up to chapter 10. Geri, I agree that the narration is pretty good. I don't think she would work for all books, but I like her Irish pronuncia..."

LOL I think I would be majorly freaked out too, Brooke, if I time traveled! I read through chapter 15 today. Major things happened. (view spoiler) Things should get interesting from here! I am enjoying all the historical detail. It’s a minor thing but I did not know (view spoiler) The romance between Tom and Ann is a bit ho hum. Amy Harmon usually does a better job at romance. But she may be focusing more on the historical aspects.

I’ll read more tomorrow!
35559 Robin wrote: "oh yay i have this on my to-read list so i am glad to see it is a pick this month. i will hopefully join in as soon as i am done with the book i am currently reading."

Hi, Robin! Welcome!

35559 Since I’ll be read a thoning on the 12 th, I’ll join in on this one too! A great reason to read, read, read!
35559 I will join in on this! This will be my first read a thon. I read for hours most days. So I will try to amp it up even more. I think I will try to read a 300-400 page book all in one day.

35559 I am listening to the audio too. The narration is pretty good. Saskia Maarleveld isn’t my favorite narrator but she is doing okay on this audio. I am enjoying this story. I haven’t read many books about Irish independence. I’ve read the first 7 chapters and will read more later!
35559 I finished a few days ago. Just haven’t had time to post. This book was just okay to me. This may work better as a show. I never got too invested in the story or characters. The ending was too sappy for me. The audiobook had the music to Honeycomb at the very end. It will probably be used in the show. I would watch the show when it airs. I kept seeing Stevie Nicks as Daisy. Of course, a young Stevie Nicks.
35559 I read more today. I’m still having trouble. But like you, Laura, I am kinda sucked into this story of sex, drugs, and rock n roll. I am at the part where Daisy has officially become part of the band. The story does feel true but nothing too original. (view spoiler)

It’s interesting, Brooke, that this is already being turned into a tv series. I could see this working well as a movie or tv show.

I had to look up the author because I didn’t recognize her name. I read 2 of her books and thought the books were just okay.
35559 I started today too. No chapters or page count for me. Daisy has made her first album. The book isn’t what I expected. I tend to have trouble with non traditional writing styles. This documentary/interview style feels a bit shallow to me, lacking some details. I don’t hate it, but I’m not loving either. I will keep going, though. Maybe I will warm up to it.

Question: Daisy Jones and The Six are real? I never heard of them.
35559 Laura wrote: "I finally finished this one. I did like it and gave it 3 stars. This was a tangled web! Once I got into it I wanted to see how Carrie and Alex played this one out. These two were definitely two pea..."

Glad you liked it. I also thought the “past“ sections were the wrong character for most of the book. Sadly, the book wasn’t just an over the top story. These things do happen. There isn’t much people won’t do to scam. A few months ago, there was a story here about a woman who staged a stunt with a homeless man so she could start a “go fund me” page. When the couple who did this did not share the money with the man, he exposed them for frauds.
35559 Brooke wrote: "I’m pretty sure this is my first Harmon book, but it is queued up on my Kindle and ready to go 4/1!"

I hope you like her book. She is a good writer!
