35559 totally agree with you there Sarah! The 5.1 location one is annoying me. Why isn't Ukraine in the list too? just because that was part of their range before this arbitrary date?!

and don't get me started on some of the bonkers two-book tasks! author initials spelling out state abbreviations forwards and backwards?! and do you know how tricky it is to find books with the letters of September in the title?! ;-P

35559 I'm feeling you! but I've just bought Aliss in the Fire (or something similar) on the basis that it's short!
Will feedback, but I get the impression of Nordic introvert gloom prevails throughout most of his work!
35559 DQs Day 3: Ch 22 to Ch 35

9) Why do you think they are so concerned about August being in the hall of records? Shady stuff with his grandfather's estate? Also, does anyone else think the people on the island are basically horrid people?

Shady stuff the his grandfather's estate. I am wondering who is actually August's father - his grandfather being massively patriarchal and "keep it in the family" I strongly suspect that August isn't actually a Salt.

10) Someone call Maury Povich! Who's the father? Do you think Lily was actually preggers? Lily honestly doesn't seem like she was a nice person and I 100% believe she's keep secrets from Emery. Any guesses on the father if she was?

I 100% believe she kept secrets. I also 100% believe that the father wasn't Dutch. If it weren't for the fact that Calvin (August's father) had scarpered already, I'd suspect him...

What I don't believe is how they kept this important piece of info quiet. Testing the foetus for DNA post her death would have been either a nail in the coffin for August or a promising lead..... ooooh! not Jake, is it?

11) Do you think this love triangle is over after that last fight between Dutch and Emery?

Ye gods, please! I'm not sure why Dutch has stuck with Emery, who seems like hard work, frankly, for so long!
But I still am not loving (or even liking) the "soul-deep love" malarkey with August...

12) Do you think a 'spell for forgetting' was cast over Emery and that's why she's having nightmares, it's her brain trying to remember what happened?

Yup!

35559 There's also always the BOM starting on 16th : How to Sell a Haunted House
I've not read it, so can't say how good it is, but I enjoyed The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires, so am hopeful this will be fun and creepy too! plus: points for answering questions too!

I cackled!
35559 @Stacey, yeah, the love stuff is a large part of the itchiness for sure!
It probably doesn't help that I read Where the Forest Meets the Stars, which has some of the same location vibe and addresses some of the issues (grief, what makes a family) which I enjoyed, without having to wade through wishy-washy witchy magic and teen hormones!

35559 DQs Day 2 ~ Chapters 11–21

5. We knew that Emery and August were a couple before the fire, but we learn now that Dutch and Lily were a couple as well. Were you expecting that at all, given that Dutch and Emery are a couple now? Does it seem odd to you that they would hook up considering their pasts or do you think it’s just because of lack of available people on the island?

I wasn't surprised Lily and Dutch were a couple - there'd been a hint earlier. I think it's because of the past that Emery & Dutch are now together, though lack of other offers undoubtedly is a factor!
What I thought was interesting in one of the flashbacks was how snippy everyone was with each other - none of them happy at that time...

6. What do you think about the fact that Hannah (Emery’s mother) and Eloise (August’s mother) continued to communicate with each other after they left? Also, that Hannah knew where they were and not only didn’t tell Emery, but told her that they weren’t coming back? (All the while with the knowledge that August had come back to see Em.)

I guess it's not a surprise that the mothers kept in touch, though it is a bit off that they kept it such a secret from Emery. I'm not sure that keeping it secret was actually better for her than allowing her to have a conversation or relationship with him.

7. We learn that August and Emery had ferry tickets to leave the island the day after Lily’s death. Emery was sure that it would further prove August’s guilt with most of the town already believing he was guilty. Even Eloise says in one of her letters that “what August did” is unforgivable. Do you think even his mother thought him guilty? Do you have a theory on what “really” happened yet?

I think August set the fire, but isn't linked to Lily's death - by drowning. Dutch was at the lighthouse, which seems more likely to be a place for someone to drown (by accident or murder), and then carried into the woods that she loved (or some such) And the "spells for forgetting" were cast on Emery?

8. Finally, we learn there are more secrets than just those about the fire and Lily’s death. One centers on Emery’s dad, Noah. Any speculation as to what his secret is? How do you think it ties into the fire and Lily or is it random?

Oh? I missed the Noah's dad bit. Beyond that his cough might be more ominous?
What's up next: some annoying "chemistry" with August and Emery. Dutch (understandably) being narked, and the women of the older generation wafting around being all witchy and cryptic and deeming that they know best...

(I'm not actually hating the book, honest! but there are some parts that are just itching at me!)
