35559 So, an afternoon stuck waiting for new tires allowed me to finish The Firefighter's Match. It has a man on the cover.

Wonder what will pop up next?

Well, this is the first book I've read by her. And it's not her typical style, I understand. Normally she writes female-centered magical realism, I think. I'm not a huge fan of magical realism; I actually wanted to read Zorro. But my library didn't have it, they only had Ripper, which is a contemporary mystery.

I can say she writes well, creates interesting characters, and this book has a good sense of place. (It's set in San Francisco, where I've lived, and it feels like SF.) I skimmed a bit when there was an illegal dogfight, but otherwise it's a quick, interesting read. But then I like character-driven books and this is full of characters.

Don't know if that helped any. :)

35559 I have Ripper by Isabel Allende, who was born in Peru, which will work for that goal, also. So which ever one gets finished first can count. At least we know we have it covered. :)

And I'm reading a couple that have a man on the cover. I suspect others are, too. That one should just be a matter of which book gets finished first.

Half-Blood (Covenant, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Way to go, Lucy!!!

Does that mean only 1 man, or just that there must be a man on there somewhere, it doesn't matter what else is there?

That's the question. Will page length trump for any book with children as a genre?

35559 So if it's over 160 pages it's good? I ask because some books have larger print so they're over the page # but not over the word count.

Sorry to be a pest, but I really like to understand the rules before I get too far along. I'm a bit compulsive that way. :)

ETA- Over 160 pp & YA tag it's good. Otherwise I'll ask you to double check.

Thanks!

No Problem. It would be interesting to have to prove that the author you read had visited SA at some point. :)

35559 Thanks.

I think it's worth clarifying, because it will come up again, I'm sure. I'll be reading The Last Battle and Young Pioneers soon. If they don't count that's fine, but I'd hate to not report them if they will work.

"Read a book written by an author who was born in South America".

Does anyone know exactly what the children's book rule is? I will be reading a couple of books that have children as a genre, though they're not picture or little kid books. Is there an AR level or word count or something? I can't find it mentioned anywhere.

I agree that whatever book gets finished first should probably be the one to count toward a goal. That way we'll get our new goal sooner. But I'm glad you didn't feel I'd stepped on your toes. The Internet can make misunderstandings easy. :)

Having said that, it's been a slow afternoon and I've finished Through Gates of Splendor, set in Ecuador. Bring on a new goal!

Kathryn,

I just realized upon reading all these posts that I jumped over your saying you could read a book for that "under 100 reviews" task. I don't know how I missed seeing it, but I didn't.

Please forgive me for jumping in like that. In fact I didn't see it at all until just now. So sorry. I'm really not a rude person normally. :(

I'm sure there will plenty of chances for all of us to read books for tasks. I don't need to trample over others to do it.

35559 Marguerite wrote: "I have read so many books over my lifetime it is hard to remember on some authors which book is which.lol"

That is so true! It's a big reason why I started using GR for more than just reading reviews. I got tired of not remembering I'd read a book before or wanting to reread my favorites in a series and not knowing which books were my favorites. :)

I still don't record all the books I read, and certainly not all the books I start but don't finish. But it's helpful for the books and series I have recorded. As well as when someone wants a recommendation for a certain type of book. I can go to my shelves and see what I have.

Then I got involved in a challenge, and a whole new reading world opened up. lol

I can't imagine anyone objecting to your completing a task! :) It's fun when a book you're already reading works for one, isn't it?

That said, I peeked at other team's tasks and one is to read a book with a character whose first name starts with "U". That one has me worried already. lol

35559 I finished The Search for Joyful. This book currently has 0 reviews. I really liked it, I'm so glad I had a good excuse to spend the day reading it.

Off to write a review.

ETA Turns out the editions needed to be merged. It still only had 79 reviews, though.

35559 I started a book this afternoon that has less than 100 reviews. It has 0. lol It's an old book I recently picked up from a used bookstore, and I'm really enjoying it. I expect to have it finished tonight - it's fast reading. I'm already on page 162. The Search for Joyful

So I'll let you know when i finish it, then I'll get back to my SA book, if that's OK. I like to have several books going at once.
