I'm surprised at how high the ratings are for this book. My expectations were pretty high, which I guess is why I'm so critical.

I'm up to Chapter 22
(view spoiler)[ I was surprised at what happened to Wes and I'm trying to figure out who dunnit. Maybe the dad of that kid who gave Gigi the creeps after they vandalized her house? Or maybe Everett has something to do with it?

So I didn't get how Jess was so upset at having Roe's friends over for sleepover? He seems to love Roe and kids in general and then acts like that when there are several of them in the house? And I don't like his anger issues. I also don't like how he keeps saying it's HIS house. (hide spoiler)]

There are parts that the good parts of the characters come through and I'm trying to give the author a break since this is her debut novel. I feel bad just picking things apart! :-)

It feels like KA-lite. The characters are somewhat similar, but the depth is missing. (view spoiler)[ I'm less ambivalent about Gigi and more annoyed. I understand why she's so insecure, but it's tedious to read about. And yeah, the way Jess yelled at Roe was just wrong. As for Wes, why don't they have someone following him 24/7 or at least a lot of the time? (hide spoiler)]

I wondered about Caderousse as well. There are so many intricacies going on. It seems like during the preceding years Dantes must have done a LOT of research into these people. I've finished Chapter 48 and (view spoiler)[ he's finally met Danglar and Villafour and their families. It was also interesting that this was the first time we heard Dante's actual thoughts on exacting revenge. I also wonder how he knew Bertuccio's background with the Villafours? He has really set things up brilliantly and I love how he develops such admiration and affection from people, knowing that he's either going to use them or destroy them at some point for his revenge. We didn't get a response the last time I put this out there, but we've got some new players.......
Does anyone want to take a shot at coming up with the essay for History of Magic? We need to write a short story/essay using the titles of books. It can be just a few sentences long, but needs 7 book titles. We can all work on it together as well, putting together pieces.

Any book that isn't highlighted on the spread sheet is available.
