No, I think you go by your edition. I’m listening to Emma, which is Pink but there are hundreds (maybe thousands) of editions.
By the way, my computer bit the dust yesterday, so I’m limited on what I can do 😭 hopefully tomorrow I can get it repaired.

1. I love the world building this author does for her universe. I find it helpful in epic fantasies when authors give a little narrative upfront about the main characters in the story and their interrelationships. The world is very grey where Gideon lives - even her porridge is grey. Her arrival in this house as a baby from a woman that fell into the world was very auspicious. Gideon attempted to run away when she was four, and tried 86 times to run away by the time she was 18. What were your initial impressions of this world?
~~~Definitely a depressing world, but when you don’t know any different you endure. I think being able to envision their world helps us to understand perhaps why Gideon has such a pessimistic look at life.
2. Harrow tricked Gideon when she talked about her offer of freedom. Gideon seemed to have the upper hand, but then Harrow won the fight through her earlier planning and planting that day. What do you think that says about their relationship?
~~~I feel like they have had a long history together, the fact that Harrow could predict Gideon’s actions (almost better than she could herself ), says that they have been through similar situations many times (86). It makes me wonder if because they are so much alike that is why they hate each other , and we will see their relationship become more of an alliance when they are away from the ninth.
3. So Harrow wants Gideon to be her guardian as she travels to the other houses. Seems like a good opportunity to get off the Ninth, and become a Cohort. Gideon does take the position. Do you think that was a good choice for her?
~~~I think it was the only choice for her. She is obviously not happy on the ninth and wants any opportunity she could get her hands on, that could help her to change her life. I got the impression that she would not have lived had she not accepted that choice.
4. I liked when Gideon’s sword instructor said “anyone can learn to fight, not anyone can learn to think”. Do you think that Gideon needs to do more thinking than fighting?
~~~I get the impression that she is a natural born fighter and doesn’t think about it. For her it’s the change in the weapon that really is throwing her off. I compare it to switching which hand you eat with. Like if you’ve been a leftie your whole life, and are forced to eat with your right hand. How hard would that be, and we don’t think about the steps involved until it is forced upon us.
5. What do you think about the House of the First? The world seems like the exact opposite of the ninth in terms of light and sky, rather than everything grey. All the houses are there - do you think Gideon is going to get into trouble or save Harrow from trouble?
~~~I have a difficult time envisioning it as light or “brighter”, as it sounds like it’s ancient and crumbling down. I definitely think Gideon will find trouble, but I think she will serve Harrow and support her. Gideon strikes me as an honorable person.
**** sorry for the length, I had to copy and paste on my phone. My computer bit the dust today 😭😭😭
Vicki- if you can go to the team spreadsheet, there is a tab labeled member info. Click on it and it shows our info (including monthly average we signed up for)
I’m not sure if we can put books on our spreadsheet and then remove them without penalty. Unless the other Captains know, I’m going to dig around a bit and see what I can find.
I usually read more than my 12 stated books each month but this month I knew I couldn’t, so I put less down when I signed up. I just figured I wouldn’t put the other books I read on the tower shelf.
Anyone else have thoughts on strategy?
It’s on!
If you listen a lot, they lock you out of books to “protect” their authors & copyrights (something like that). Each month I can get through 2 or 3 then I’m limited to only books they allow me 😒 a bit annoying but I still get my money’s worth.
