35559 I finished The Whisper Man and added Butterfly (easyšŸ˜•) as the animal.
My current read , How to be a Good Creature, is full of animals. I’m going to use the Echidna, a tricky animal 😁.

35559 They’ll accept that, as long as it still pertains to the animal.
Good find!

both moth and butterfly are on the list easy list. So what exactly is the question?"

Both Vicki and I are reading The Whisper Man by Alex North , no color cover and so far I only found Butterfly. They refer to the exact species of Butterfly, named a Corpse Moth (still technically a butterfly, it's not a moth). So my concern was that someone would argue that point. BUT, I just came across a Caterpillar in the book. So we should be fine.
I was assuming I could use Butterfly and then Vicki could use Caterpillar because the cover is not a color and it doesn't fit a sin genre. (horror, mystery, thriller). So the book would just an Anything goes if there was only one animal in the book.
Make sense?

35559 True Vicki, I think I’m dreading asking ;)

35559 Vicki- There are butterflies and later in the book they call one a Corpse Moth. Moth is on the list but technically isn’t it still a butterfly? Otherwise it would work. Opinions?

35559 @Devann I’m hoping there’s another animal because the cover is white :/ and horror/thriller genre. Not looking good, but it came up in my loan list

35559 Vicki and I are both reading The Whisper Man, so the first to finish can only claim the animal, correct?
So far I’ve only found Butterfly, which is still better than using it for genre or another criteria.

35559 I’m reading a book that I had on my hold list, has Butterfly so far 😟 if I find another animal in this book does it count for another point?

35559 Devann I think your right, even easy animals beat out genre.

Mary- It probably depends on the page count and if it’s a color cover vs Animal , and so on. I found a super long book that’s a sin bingo, but I just can’t get to it right now. So maybe maxing our the quick points (tricky animal ) with short books is good for now.
35559 DQ Day 5 Chapter 20 to the end

20- Early in chapter 29, Hetty thinks to herself, ā€œFor a year and a half we’ve been as safe as we could ask for. The fence, regular supplies. Welch and the Headmistress to hold us together. A year and a half, and in a week I’ve torn it apart.ā€ Do you agree? Do you think the events at the end are Hetty’s fault?
Yes, she definitely messed up by exploring the Island and then the whole gate/door thing. I don't blame her at all, with all of the lies being exposed it would make me wonder WTH too.

21- The chaos of chapter 20 is nuts. A bear, poison, evil people who think they have a better right to life than the others. The thing I found most disturbing in this part was that the extra girls, the remaining girls, the ones we know almost nothing about, seemed truly extra to the story. I felt nothing for them, and that bothered me. How did you all feel about this chaotic part of the book; the taking of Reese, the poison room, etc.?
I agree, it was a bit too much for me. Everything at once, and all I could think was "oh good, it's almost over"

22- The reveal of the cause of the Tox, (view spoiler) was a good story point, I thought. Would you have liked to get more info on this? Did you have any inkling that this was the cause, or what did you think it was? Do you think that the CDC (or whoever found this stuff) released it on the island, or was it found there in the girls?
I'm still not quite clear on this.... It's a worm living inside of them? How did it get to the island???

23- What happens next? Do they reach the mainland? Does Byatt recover, or is her essence gone? Why? Will there be a sequel, and will you read it if there is?
I have no clue, but it does seem to be a set up for another book. Too much left unsaid and not enough development for me. I didn't like Reese and I could care less about Hetty. So , no I wouldn't continue on.
35559 DQ Day 4 Chapters 14-19

16. I felt so bad for Reese to be able to see her father again and so different. Mr. Harker changed in ways none of the girls have. Why do you think the Tox is more aggressive with men? Is it just hormones or something else? Was Reese’s reaction to Hetty killing her father a normal reaction? Do you think Reese has lost hope now?
I believe the hormones are the key. I think Reese's reaction was extreme. I think I would be more scared and sad than angry. Reese is too bitter to lose hope.

17. Byatt’s section was pretty intense. This is the first time that we see the Tox attacking someone and how horrific it is. By the end she seems pretty resigned and ready to die when Paretta tells her that they are evacuating and there will be no more help for Roxton. Do you think Byatt understood that she was condemned everyone to death by breaking quarantine? I was surprised at how easily Byatt gave in to the doctor. I am sure she didn't think of the consequences of her actions, normal teenage mentality

18. Welch and the Headmistress are really upset about quarantine being broken. Do you believe they know who did it? What do you think about Welch telling the truth to the Boat Shift girls on the dock before she kills herself? Do they believe her or are just to overwhelm to really process everything?
I believed they had their suspicions about who broke quarantine. I think Welch just snapped and had enough. What a difficult job to keep those girls alive .... I think the girls that were already boat shift believed her, but not so much Hetty

19. Hetty was right when she said Welch held everything and everyone together (paraphrasing). The first night she is gone things start to fall apart. Hetty not locking the gate when they got back. Gun Shift girls falling asleep on duty. Both reasons caused Lindsey to die. Do you think Hetty will step up to lead to the girls to make sure things do not dissolve any further into chaos or let her guilt of not locking the gate overwhelm her?
I do believe Hetty will step up, not so much as a leader but as a fighter. I don't think she will be overwhelmed by the guilt but instead it will help strengthen her.

35559 The longer books help, the larger the pages count the more points we get. I’ll start reading longer ones soon.

35559 I’m so confused... so wouldn’t we all just try to read a book with a different tricky animal? And we only get 7 points for one book if we do that? If We read the same book as each other the first reader gets 7 points, and the second reader gets 1? So we would definitely read different books.

The searching is my favorite part, but yeah... takes away from the actual reading part šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚

35559 Aquarium by David Vann was also a good quick read with rare fish throughout. I read it last month.
The Whale In Search of the Giants of the Sea by Philip Hoare is another one with lots of animals. I’ll probably go with the How to be a Good Creature one.

35559 Sorry y’all, I’m not usually so dim about challenges.

But I did find a great book with Tricky animals
How to Be a Good Creature A Memoir in Thirteen Animals by Sy Montgomery
I found Playtpus , Echidnas, Pademelons... all within 2 pages of each other.
Unfortunately it’s a short book when it comes to page points , but I can definitely get though it in this week.

35559 So does that mean we get 1 point for every different animal we find in one book?
Like in the Whale there are easily 7 different tricky/easy animals...
