If you can turn your writing time into a refuge from the rest of it--think of it as creative escape rather than creative obligation--it may help.

Ghost HouseI dwell in a lonely house I know
That vanished many a summer ago,
And left no trace but the cellar walls,
And a cellar in which the daylight falls
And the purple-stemmed wild raspberries grow.
O'er ruined fences the grape-vines shield
The woods come back to the mowing field;
The orchard tree has grown one copse
Of new wood and old where the woodpecker chops;
The footpath down to the well is healed.
I dwell with a strangely aching heart
In that vanished abode there far apart
On that disused and forgotten road
That has no dust-bath now for the toad.
Night comes; the black bats tumble and dart;
The whippoorwill is coming to shout
And hush and cluck and flutter about:
I hear him begin far enough away
Full many a time to say his say
Before he arrives to say it out.
It is under the small, dim, summer star.
I know not who these mute folk are
Who share the unlit place with me—
Those stones out under the low-limbed tree
Doubtless bear names that the mosses mar.
They are tireless folk, but slow and sad—
Though two, close-keeping, are lass and lad,—
With none among them that ever sings,
And yet, in view of how many things,
As sweet companions as might be had.

I have a feeling they didn't think they were coming back and then they got the green light. It does feel like something changed.

They're not even Christmas mystery movies, which that at least I could get behind.

This is inspirational, Jordan. The still writing, still being creative despite the lack of sleep and the family turmoil. <3

Yes to both of those. Wicked Gentlemen is delightful--in fact, I'd love to read that one again--and Rifter is just...wow.

I even kind of enjoy those sappy holiday movies once it's December. But in July I want John Wick to kill everyone at Hallmark involved with programming.
And I'm not feeling much more charitable in November, let alone October.
A reader shared this with me in emailPumpkins
At the end of the garden,
Across the litter of weeds and grass cuttings,
The pumpkin spreads its coarse,
Bristled, hollow-stemmed lines,
Erupting in great leaves
Above flowers
The nobbly and prominent
Stigmas of which
Are like fuses
Waiting to be set by bees.
When, like a string
Of yellow mines
Across the garden,
The pumpkins will smolder
And swell,
Drawing their combustion from the sun
To make their own.
At night I lie
Waiting for detonations,
Half expecting
To find the garden
Cratered like a moon.
