It's the best! If you are not lucky enough to have a Kindle and are comforitable reading on your PC you can download the Kindle for PC for free and read all these great old public domain books that way! I think they have a free Kindle for IPhone app too.

31308 Wow! Thanks Karla! I ran right over to Amazon as soon as I saw this to download His Hour, Three Weeks and Elizabeth Visit's America all for free for my Kindle! Oh I love my Kindle! I have found myself reading more classics than I ever used to because, well why not? They are free!

I have not read this yet so I don't know if it really qualifies as having bodice ripper elements but I recently picked up To Have and To Hold by Mary Johnston (again free classic for my Kindle) because it seemed to have that BR "epic" feel. And check out the cover! Looks like romance and adventure to me!

31308 I have posted some group rules/posting guidelines here. I am going to ask Karla to edit the first post of this thread to include a "content warning" for any future participants. I hope this addresses any concerns :)

31308 Disclosure for general group discussions:
Just so we are clear, Bodice Ripper novels are full of un-PC content! Therefore in a group that discusses un-PC romance novels it is fair to say while navigating the group threads you are likely to encounter some un-PC comments and discussions. This is not intended to offend but is all in the name of fun! Let’s all keep in mind that we all have different tastes and tolerance levels for some questionable content. What is way over the line for one reader may be considered good old BR fun to another. All comments and opinions (good or bad) are welcome but let’s please respect others right to their opinions as well and not rain on anyone’s parade by being overly negative. :) Some possible book/thread content: rape, slavery, spousal abuse, incest, assault, kidnapping, various sexual acts etc… This is fiction we are talking about here and any casual discussions in this group regarding these topics should not be misinterpreted as casualness regarding their real life counterparts.

It is important to me that we establish a "group culture" of openness and fun! I don't want anyone to have to censor themselves. I want to welcome all member to fully express themselves and their opinions in whatever way they choose. Sometimes this is going to mean possibly offensive and crude language. So don't be shocked if you come across some crazy comments! I hope by setting this expectation up front members will not be caught off guard and offended by some of the comments made in this group. So just so we are clear: Warning: This is an everything goes group! Posts and discussions in this group may contain explicit language including: swearing, sexual references, crude jokes and other possibly questionable content all in the name of BR fun!”

Conditions of Participation:
All members are welcome to start a discussion thread anywhere in this site. If you choose feel free to include conditions for participation for that thread. Please be as clear and specific as possible. If you would like participants to avoid any specific topics or language just state so (clearly and respectfully) in the first post of the thread. All member should do their best to follow the conditions of participation set by the person who started the thread if any are set.

Please Respect Others
Any and all personal insults will not be tolerated. In general it is safest to just avoid the word "you" and speak for yourself in terms of "I". "You are stupid if you think...." is not acceptable. Instead try "I think differently. In my opinion...". Any members who treat others with disrespect will receive a personal message from the moderator for a first offense and be banned from the group on a second. (If a members account is set to private so that I can not PM that member immediate banning from group may occur depending on the level of the offense)

Spoiler Tags:
Please be considerate of others and use spoiler tags when revealing key plot elements.

You can hide your 'spoilers' with the new spoiler tag by putting <*spoiler><*/spoiler> before and after your spoiler (without the *) and your spoiler will be hidden with a link like this (view spoiler) Pretty cool huh! :)

Promotion:
We would love to hear about your projects you would like to share with us! Just start a thread in the promotion folder and tell us all about it! Any promotion type threads started anywhere else in this group will be moved to the promotion folder. If a promotional comment is left in any other discussion thread in this group it will be deleted immediately. Thank you for keeping this in mind.

My hope is that we will have active, lively and open discussions in this group! I think if we all keep these things in mind we can all feel comfortable to participate! Every comment/opinion is welcome!

I am sorry if this discussion has bothered you Acornn. I hope you will still consider reading and discussing with us. Personally I don't mind the language but I understand it might bother some and I don't want anyone to get turned off from the group. I am going to start working on some group rules/posting guidelines. Maybe we can have some threads with a "content warning" upfront that can have a bit more freedom but not generally in the group. I will work on that in the next day or two so until then: Everyone: Please be mindful of any language that might be considered inappropriate to others. I appreciate your cooperation in this matter. xoxo

31308 Oh Karla, I am very glad you started this thread! I am sorry if this disucussion has not turned out the way you had hoped. I think it is really great that you did start it and that some of you are "pacing" together and others are just jumping in to discuss. I know it can be frustrating to read "negative" comments about a book your are enthusiastic about but I hope we can all understand that we all have different tastes and tolerance levels for these types of books and will make differnt observations.

31308 Danielle "The Book Huntress" wrote: "I think that to make a plantation seem like Disneyland is pretty bad. Not all slave owners were extremely cruel, but the enslavement of people is wrong in my opinion...."

No doubt about it, the enslavement of people is wrong, period. On the other hand making a plantation seem like Disneyland in a fictional novel is not wrong IMO. I don't need my fiction to accurately represent the horrors of history all the time. It's ok for my fiction to be idealistic and to gloss over the ugly stuff. I appreciate novels with characters that are not pro-slavery but I don't mind reading about characters that are pro-slavery (or just accept slavery as a given) either.

You know what Karla, I think the "trend" to sweep the ugly stuff of history under the rug (in romance and just in general... like in history books even) is not so much a trend and just human nature. In a way it is an acknowledgment of just how ugly it was. As human beings we like to think of ourselves as generally good and try to turn away from or even skew the stuff that we now acknowledge was wrong. Don't want to face how truly awful humanity can be and has been.

Anyway.....

It is hard to say what I most enjoy about the old skool romance novels. I just find them incredibly entertaining. I love the pushy, overbearing, super alpha males. I also enjoy the epic scale of them. I love how the romance is usually slow to form and not overnight. Rippers usually deliver like no other in the WTF department and I love it! I am a very laid back person with little to no drama in my life so I can handle a whole lot of drama in my reading! LOL

31308 Thought I would post some ideas for some reading challenges. Please go ahead and take any of these ideas and adjust them to fit your own personal reading goals!

A-Z book challenge : Read a book (BR's only or any genre, you choose) that starts with every letter of the alphabet (x can be anywhere in the title).

A-Z author challenge : Read a book (BR's only or any genre, you choose) by an author whose name (first or last) begins with every letter of the alphabet.

Read your name : Read a book that starts with every letter in your name (first only or first and last).

Best bodice ripper list challenge : Read 10 (20, 30 etc) bodice rippers from this great
list! or from the GoodReads list here!

BR heyday challenge : Read a BR that was originally published in every year of the bodice ripper heyday 1970-1995 (or pick a decade, 5 year period, extend/contract to what you consider the era of the BR's etc)

Favorite Author Challenge : Read every book ever published by your favorite BR author!

New Author Challenge : Try 10(5,20, one every month etc) books by 10 different authors that are new to you.

TBR Challenge : Read 10 (20,30, 40 etc) books from your personal TBR shelf (BR's or any genre).

Just some ideas :) If you are interested in challenging yourself/setting some reading goals, start a thread and share with us your progress. You can choose to use only bodice rippers for these challenges or any genre you like. Give yourself a specific goal/challenge and timeframe you will try to finish in. We would love to see how you are doing and cheer you on! (not to mention get some ideas for our own TBR shelves!)

31308 This has been discussed in some of the other threads but I thought it would be fun to start a thread just for this topic. I think in this group we are all united in our love for a good old fashioned BR but probably for very different reasons. What’s yours? What book is a good example of what you love most about this genre?
