Disclosure for general group discussions:
Just so we are clear, Bodice Ripper novels are full of un-PC content! Therefore in a group that discusses un-PC romance novels it is fair to say while navigating the group threads you are likely to encounter some un-PC comments and discussions. This is not intended to offend but is all in the name of fun! Let’s all keep in mind that we all have different tastes and tolerance levels for some questionable content. What is way over the line for one reader may be considered good old BR fun to another. All comments and opinions (good or bad) are welcome but let’s please respect others right to their opinions as well and not rain on anyone’s parade by being overly negative. :) Some possible book/thread content: rape, slavery, spousal abuse, incest, assault, kidnapping, various sexual acts etc… This is fiction we are talking about here and any casual discussions in this group regarding these topics should not be misinterpreted as casualness regarding their real life counterparts.

It is important to me that we establish a "group culture" of openness and fun! I don't want anyone to have to censor themselves. I want to welcome all member to fully express themselves and their opinions in whatever way they choose. Sometimes this is going to mean possibly offensive and crude language. So don't be shocked if you come across some crazy comments! I hope by setting this expectation up front members will not be caught off guard and offended by some of the comments made in this group. So just so we are clear: Warning: This is an everything goes group! Posts and discussions in this group may contain explicit language including: swearing, sexual references, crude jokes and other possibly questionable content all in the name of BR fun!”

Conditions of Participation:
All members are welcome to start a discussion thread anywhere in this site. If you choose feel free to include conditions for participation for that thread. Please be as clear and specific as possible. If you would like participants to avoid any specific topics or language just state so (clearly and respectfully) in the first post of the thread. All member should do their best to follow the conditions of participation set by the person who started the thread if any are set.

Please Respect Others
Any and all personal insults will not be tolerated. In general it is safest to just avoid the word "you" and speak for yourself in terms of "I". "You are stupid if you think...." is not acceptable. Instead try "I think differently. In my opinion...". Any members who treat others with disrespect will receive a personal message from the moderator for a first offense and be banned from the group on a second. (If a members account is set to private so that I can not PM that member immediate banning from group may occur depending on the level of the offense)

Spoiler Tags:
Please be considerate of others and use spoiler tags when revealing key plot elements.

You can hide your 'spoilers' with the new spoiler tag by putting <*spoiler><*/spoiler> before and after your spoiler (without the *) and your spoiler will be hidden with a link like this (view spoiler) Pretty cool huh! :)

Promotion:
We would love to hear about your projects you would like to share with us! Just start a thread in the promotion folder and tell us all about it! Any promotion type threads started anywhere else in this group will be moved to the promotion folder. If a promotional comment is left in any other discussion thread in this group it will be deleted immediately. Thank you for keeping this in mind.

My hope is that we will have active, lively and open discussions in this group! I think if we all keep these things in mind we can all feel comfortable to participate! Every comment/opinion is welcome!

Very nice! There's a lot to like here. :) I especially like the leeway given to members for their own threads.

Shel I really don't agree that some need to swear and say WTF in a discussion group. Many people are offended by the "F" word. I am really disappointed since I like some boddice rippers and won't be able to participate:(

I don't care for swearing myself. I tolerate it but I don't care for it.

I'm sorry you feel that way Shel. I know that not every single member is going to be 100% comfortable with some of the language that will be in the group. I just can't bring myself to ask everyone to censor themselves and feel like they have to walk on eggshells. I don't want anyone to be caught off guard so I am just putting this right out there to begin with.

Shel if you like, when there is a bodice ripper you would like to read with the group you can start a "buddy read" thread and you can set the guidelines for that discussion. That way you can still have the benefit of reading these books with others who also appreciate them without having to come across language that you are not comfortable with. :)

I don't see it as "need to swear" but "have the option." :) And things like DGAF and WTF were "invented" to be softer yet still convey sentiments accurately - and it's less explicit than what is seen in newspapers and magazines, where they usually asterisk out one letter or put a dash between the first and last letters.

Exactly! It's an option. No one "needs" to and I hope members will not swear just for the sake of being vulgar. But sometimes it is just how some will choose to express themselves and that needs to be ok for this group I think.

Tell someone they shouldn't and can't, and they will. Tell someone it's up to them, and they'll self-moderate because the responsibility is given to them, rather than being imposed. (I'm just going by my own mulish nature here.)

It's really a personal judgment call in how to express opinions about what's being read, since the books that will be discussed have high incidents of rape, torture, slavery, death, and whatnot. We're definitely not reading And Ladies of the Club!

Gigi | 31 comments Great rules Jennefer! Love the freedom of expression, regardless of what it is! And of course, as long as it isnt personally attacking anyone.

Shel Jennefer,
I do appreciate the suggestion, but I think I will just stay on my own, no big deal.
Thanks,
Shel

Kay | 14 comments Good rules Jennefer!!! We are all adults here, and should have the ability to censor ourselves if need be.

The nature of this genre isn't for the faint of heart, who want warm kiddie friendly books. So participants should be prepared for graphic discussions of the material that we have read. Most BR's contain all kinds of sexual acts, violence, intriques, renegades, rebls and rogues. We aren't talking Disney here. I'm pretty sure that I have never read a G rated Bodice Ripper....

I think G-rated Bodice Rippers are like unicorns!

Yup - Amen to that - I think some people are confusing bodice rippers with Harlequin Historicals."

I think that you might be right about the HH's, and unicorns.

MY DH calls my 'romance novels' porno that women can feel good about. Without a discreet brown paper wrapper...

I had a History teacher than once said that it wasn't a good BR if there wasn't some sex by page 68....
We did a test for awhile on all the BR that we gals were reading at the time and he was right quite a few of them had a sex scene around page 68 give or take 10 pages....

Bertrice Small usually didn't mess around that long. I think Beloved has a sack/rape/pillage/murder by page 5. LOL

I am laughing outloud at this because in BR or Romance novels I once joked to my husband that the steamy sex scenes always seem to start around Chapter 8. Now often when he sees me reading he asks me if I have gotten to "Chapter 8" yet!

message 21: by Kay (new)

Kay | 14 comments I think that it's some sort of unwritten requirement that there has to be some type of sex no later than Chapter 8 give or take.

I have read a few that it started right after the dedications page. Most of the time it was reliving some dream, nightmare, or event in the heroine's past or future.

Jessica | 3 comments I like the rule. Haha. And can I start off my fist comment in this group with a joke? Im sure other people have heard it but I thought it was halarious and I just have to share in case others haven't. What do you call a Tater tot in the shape of a male reproductive organ? ... Dictator
