3113 .... and then Cylons took over the planet....
3113 there's significant evidence to show that major climate changes in our geologic past have been triggered by some kind of event, such as a meteor or asteroid impact, volcanic activity, or massive release of gasses from the oceans. I find it completely possible that human activity qualifies as an event, occurring in the natural world, which can trigger climate change. The earth tends to self-correct. It's just that the conditions it imposes during a time of correction are often less conducive to survival for mammals and other species. One way or another, the earth will survive. Whether we do or not depends on our ability to assess the situation and adapt. That's all.
3113 now if we could just develop the technology to harvest that quarry of trash.

3113 only if you kill everyone else and are left alone. Then you'll have a lot of peace.
3113 I try and use my grandparents lives as a kind of model. They had good lives, always had enough, shared with those they loved... nothing extreme, nothing austere, just quiet and solid lives. Choosing well made things, using them until they could be used no more. It's odd that it's such an old fashioned notion now.
3113 i'm big fan of incentives vs laws. i think a balance between govt and personal responsibility is necessary in order to steer away from fascism. disregard for the natural world has always bothered me, long before climate change was an idea being pimped around. I think it's rude to live with so little disregard for resources and pollution. It's lazy and sloppy and inelegant. The industrial age has fostered this greed for more than we need as a culture and as individuals. This disconnect from our natural environment, as if we are somehow separate from it.

I dislike the commercialization of environmentalism, but I also recognize that most people are sheep who need to be lead along by the nose. If that's what it takes for the majority of people to start behaving with more regard for their environment, so be it. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there just trying to make a buck off of it. Typical. But I hope that at it's heart it is a return to the core values of husbanding our resources and treating the planet with the respect it deserves. Gratitude. Care.

My big thing is trying to keep things local. Shipping stuff all over the world constantly seems so incredibly impractical. Why do I need people in China to make everything I touch? I find that premise incredibly lame.

Then again, I'm aware that I'm a bit of an anachronism. Crotchety old lady who remembers when gas was 28 cents a gallon. An ex boyfriend of mine once remarked to me that he expected I wished we all lived in bark huts. He wasn't far wrong. But I wouldn't go that far now. I kind of like my condo.
3113 Two Myanmar fishermen have survived for almost a month in shark-infested waters by floating in a large ice box after their boat sank, rescue officials said.

The men, both in their 20s, were on a Thai fishing boat with 18 others when it sank in heavy seas off Australia's north coast on Dec. 23, said Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokeswoman Tracy Jiggins.

"They had no safety equipment, no beacons, no means of communication and they'd been drifting for 25 days," Jiggins told Reuters on Tuesday, describing the ice box as "desk sized."

3113 Another name on the long list of people I didn't know were still alive until they died. Bye Robot!!! We loved your voice.
3113 all I hear anymore when people want to argue about climate change is "blah blah blah blah blah".

I try and live by a pretty basic piece of common sense: don't shit in your own nest. The lowest impact I can have and still conduct my life is what I shoot for. It's what has meaning for me. I can't make everyone else live the same way. If other people don't have the sense to treat their own environment well it's par for the course. I'm awash in a sea of morons on a daily basis anyway. Why should this be any different?
