3113 Monica: Che was responsible for executing thousands of prisoners after the take over of Cuba. Here is a quote from one article:

Under Che, Havana's La Cabana fortress was converted into Cuba's Lubianka. He was a true Chekist: "Always interrogate your prisoners at night," Che commanded his prosecutorial goons, "a man is easier to cow at night, his mental resistance is always lower." [1:]

A Cuban prosecutor of the time who quickly defected in horror and disgust named Jose Vilasuso estimates that Che signed 400 death warrants the first few months of his command in La Cabana. A Basque priest named Iaki de Aspiazu, who was often on hand to perform confessions and last rites, says Che personally ordered 700 executions by firing squad during the period. Cuban journalist Luis Ortega, who knew Che as early as 1954, writes in his book Yo Soy El Che! that Guevara sent 1,897 men to the firing squad.

In his book Che Guevara: A Biography, Daniel James writes that Che himself admitted to ordering "several thousand" executions during the first year of the Castro regime. Felix Rodriguez, the Cuban-American CIA operative who helped track him down in Bolivia and was the last person to question him, says that Che during his final talk, admitted to "a couple thousand" executions. But he shrugged them off as all being of "imperialist spies and CIA agents."

3113 I can imagine that he panicked, I can also imagine that Oscar called him a name. Hard to know in all that din what actually went down. The other officers certainly looked shocked when he shot him in the back.

3113 oh jesus, what a fucking crock.
3113 I shouldn't continue to be shocked by stuff like this, but I still am.

3113 There were riots in the streets of Oakland again yesterday after the BART officer who was arrested for the murder of Oscar Grant had his bail set in the amount of 3 million dollars. Although he did not put up his bail and is still in cutody, the streets of Oakland went wild for several hours in protest.

I have watched all the videos which have been posted which captured the shooting of Oscar Grant on New Years, and I have to say it appears to be a pretty blatant case of excessive force, which amounts to murder. He was shot in the back, while being held face down on the pavement, in full view of many witnesses. There is no evidence in the videos that he was even resisting arrest.

This is reminiscent of the Rodney King riots of 1992. I can't say that he was shot because he was black, necessarily, but I can see the case being made for that reasonably.

Intense times we live in.

3113 I find it stunning that you were harassed out of math classes. Where the hell did you live?? When I was in school a lot of the best students in math were girls. My BFF at the time was a math whiz and helped a bunch of the boys with their homework. Who gets sexist about math? People are so weird.

3113 “The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it”
Terry Pratchett

“I try to keep an open mind, but not so open that my brains fall out.”
Harold T. Stone

“You can have such an open mind that it is too porous to hold a conviction.”
George Crane

“The open mind never acts: when we have done our utmost to arrive at a reasonable conclusion, we still - must close our minds for the moment with a snap, and act dogmatically on our conclusions”
George Bernard Shaw

“Tact is the ability to tell a man he has an open mind when he has a hole in his head”

3113 I was good at math, I just hated it.
3113 personally I think the taxpayers should feel lucky it was only 7 employees and not 700.

Somehow I have more problems with the 68 billion that the bankers just paid themselves for their golden parachutes.
3113 Is it grassley?

3113 Ooo! What does Gore Vidal say about it?
3113 Grassley received a lifetime achievement award on May 17, 2007 from the National Whistleblower Center. I think he'd kind of a professional putz.

3113 Acting in the Way of Nature
...often means not acting--
Not doing anything.
Indeed an empire can often be won
By doing nothing at the right time.
Indeed a life can often be lost
By trying to do too much .
