One of the reasons I love historical/period movies. It's like reading my historical romances come to life.

DHASG May Challenge

Introduction: May is a burst of color and warm weather to enjoy. Here's hoping your spring blooms with plenty of good reads.

Rules:

1. Any DHASG member can participate in the challenge. You can sign up at any time after the thread opens until the end of the month (11:59 am) May 31st) and post initial and final stats when you are done.

2. All books must be read between May 1st and May 31st.

3. Books of any genre can count for the challenge, but can only be used once in the entire challenge.

4. The challenge books can overlap with any other group challenge during the month of May.

Levels:

1. Full bloom: Read 10-11 books
2. Anthesis: Read 5-9 books
3. Budding flower: Read 3-4 books

1. For the Love of Mom!: May 10th is Mother's Day in the US. Read a book that celebrates moms/motherhood in a significant way.
2. Baby Love!: May 2nd is Baby Day, so read a book with a baby, either the MCs have a baby or the storyline involves babies. You can count a book where there is a pregnancy as long as they give birth during the book.
3. Renewal Day: May 4th is celebrate 'renewal' of any kind. You can pick a book that represents this in any way you'd like. Let us know in parentheses.
4. Teacher's Pet!: Read a book where a lead character or pivotal character is a teacher or educator to represent this day celebrated on the first full Tuesday of the month. Take the time to say thanks to a teacher that you know for the hard job they do out of love.
5. No Diet Day!: May 6th is an international holiday to celebrate the idea that we can love ourselves no matter what our size is, and to discourage unhealthy dieting to lose weight. Read a book with a character who is overweight or considered underweight, or struggles with weight issues. The other option is to indulge in a pure guilty pleasure read off your list. Let us know which option you choose in parentheses.
6. A Little TLC!: May 6-12 is National Nurse's Week, so read a book with a character who is a nurse (not a doctor) or a book where a character is nursed by another character. Let us know which one you choose in parentheses.
7. The Twilight Zone: To commemorate the TV show "The Twilight Zone" on May 11th, read a book this month that is weird, strange, surreal, fantastic, scary or odd.
8. Flower Love: May is the month associated with flowers out of all the months, so read a book with a lead character who has a flower name, a book with a floral theme on the cover, a book where a character works with flowers or is a gardener or landscaper or even an herbalist. If you can think of another way to represent this theme, you can use it, but let us know in parentheses.
9. If Music Be the Fruit of Love... May has a few music-related holidays, so read a book that represents music in some way, either leads who are musicians, a title that is similar to a song title, a person(s) on the cover dancing, or a book that involves a person who loves music or dancing. Let us know which one in parentheses.
10. Potpourri: Pick one of the following to read a book for this month--Boy's Club Day (Predominant Male POV book); National Chocolate Chip Day (Books about dessert or food); National Waiters and Waitresses Day (Association of your choice); Wear Purple for Peace Day (Purple association of your choice); Cinco Day Mayo (Holiday association of your choice). Let us know which one and how you used it.
11.In Memorium: Memorial Day and Police Officer's Memorial Day are both this month, so read a book with a lead character who is either in the military/armed forces or in law enforcement.

29443 Congratulations, Elizabeth!
Wow, who would name their child Semen? Is that a foreign language name?
29443 @Missyb, I can overlook minor grammar/editing issues, but if the writing mechanics are poor, that's hard for me. I think it's because I read so much that my reading eye has become more demanding and poor writing doesn't get past me as much as it might have before.
29443 @Natalie, I definitely have to watch what I'm reading depending on the subject matter and what's going on in my life. I think I'm just very empathetic, that even fiction stays with me if the subject matter is very close to home or disturbing or angsty.

I've had no luck teaching myself to crochet. :(
29443 I love redemption as a theme, and I think that's part of why I am drawn to dark heroes. I like to see love redeem them. I admit I like if they stay edgy though.
29443 Sonya Heaney wrote: "It's infamous for being one of the most violent bodice rippers. It's like the author sat there with a list of all the horrible things that could happen to a character, and then made sure she includ..."

Pretty much. I read it a long time ago, and once was enough. It wasn't a badly written book, just too much yuck.

Ick!!! That's just appalling. I'm so glad we're past that rape, rape, rape historical romance fad of the 70s and 80s.
29443 I love MOC books and unrequited love themes, Daisey!
