29443 I agree with you, for the record. I think there are plenty of people who this is normal for. It feels weird not to see it more often in mainstream books.
29443 I get what you're saying, Camela. I think that regardless of the type of woman character, she needs to be well-defined and have a legitimate personality.
29443 @Camela, I don't have a problem with a 'submissive' heroine, as long as they aren't paired with a controlling, domineering brute.

I don't think all women are and should be expected to be 'alpha'.
29443 @Katya, I think some non-religious readers get offended at the idea of a person attending church outside of a Christian/inspirational novel. I think that's why you don't see it that much.

29443 Welcome, Camela! You mentioned two of my favorite series! I too love a tortured hero.

That's fine. I never choose my level until I post my final stats. Glad you joined the group and the challenge, Netanella!

29443 I kept passing these by because I didn't like the cover. Foolish me, because they are great books.

DHASG June Challenge

Introduction: June is the middle month of the year, and the first month of summer. The heat is here to stay. Kids get out of school. Let the party start! Let's see what June has in store of us for reading!

Rules:

1. Any DHASG member can participate in the challenge. You can sign up at any time after the thread opens until the end of the month (11:59 am) June 30th) and post initial and final stats when you are done.

2. All books must be read between June 1st and June 30th.

3. Books of any genre can count for the challenge, but can only be used once in the entire challenge.

4. The challenge books can overlap with any other group challenge during the month of June.

Levels:

1. June Bug: Read 9 or more books
2. June Joy: Read 6-9 books
3. Welcome to June: Read 4-5 books

1. An Invitation to a Wedding: June is the biggest month for weddings, so let's read a book which heavily features a wedding in its storyline, even if it's not the main couple's wedding.
2.Let's Flip a Coin!: On June 1st, you are allowed to make a decision using a flip of a coin. I don't know if that's the best way to make life decisions, but how about you use this method to decide your next book, and the book you read will count for this challenge.
3. Repeat Repeat Day: June 3rd is Repeat Day. In honor, read a book you've read before, or read the same author two books in a row this month. The repeat book counts for this challenge.
4. Old Maid's Day: Read a book where the lead is an old maid/spinster or seems like the only one who hasn't gotten married or is in a serious relationship amongst their friends. Historical or contemporary counts.
5. Best Friend Day: June 8th is the day to celebrate best friends. Read a book where the lead has a strong friendship with another character that survives the test of time, or a book that features the POV of best friends.
6. Blame Someone Else Day: June 13th is the holiday where you're not responsible for any mistakes made. For this challenge, read a book with external conflict, aka, a villain or antagonist, who is the reason everything goes wrong for the hero.
7. Friday the 13th: Oh no! Read a book to ward off the bad luck of the 13th falling on a Friday this month. The book must be scary, weird, or eerie or have a really freaky villain or character. If you can find a book where the lead is superstitious, that will count. Or you can read the 13th book in your tbr pile or a book with thirteen letters in its title. Please let us know which one you choose in parentheses.
8. Your Love is Better than Ice Cream!: National Chocolate Ice Cream Day celebrated on June 7th, let's celebrate the comfort of diving into a scoop of chocolatey goodness ice cream. How? By reading a book that has a supremely satisfying romance. Love is like chocolate, get it?
9. Daddy Love!: For Father's Day, June 15th, read a book which celebrates fatherhood in any significant way.
10. National Splurge Day: Treat yourself to a new book in honor of June 18th (the day to treat yourself to a luxury). To count for this challenge, you must buy yourself a new book and read it this month. You can use a free book so long as you purchased/acquired it this month. Library books and previously owned books don't count.
11.Talk Back to that Book!: In honor of National Hollerin Day on the third Saturday of the month, you can count a book that makes you talk back to it or yell at it. If you don't normally do that, use a book that inspired strong emotions in you as you read it this month.
12.Pick One!: Choose one of the holidays and read a book for it--National Pink Day (Pink book or character loves pink); Log Cabin Day (book with a 'rustic setting'); Forgiveness Day (your choice); Sun Glasses Day (bright cover, or someone wears sunglasses in book); International Panic Day (your choice).

29443 I appreciated your 'deranged' post. That has totally happened to me. I find I am all excited about a new to me series, and everyone read it years ago. :)
29443 Susan wrote: "I do like a self-aware hero with adult sensibilities. Men who behave badly are one thing; behaving childishly is so not sexy, it's a big turnoff for me in a romance novel."

Agreed.
29443 Pamela(AllHoney) wrote: "Boring is the #1 reason for a DNF book."

Yup. Same here!
29443 Missy wrote: " Danielle The Book Huntress (Angels Weep For Goodreads) wrote: "I hate cheating!"

I'm the same. I have to check beforehand if there is cheating involved."

Yeah, I hate when they sneak cheating into a book.

29443 Jodi Thomas seems to love quirky characters as much as I do.

The Texan's Wager--hero doesn't talk much

Forever in Texas--hero is considered the ugliest man in town.

Just for starters.

Yeah, it was difficult when we moved back to Texas. I made the choice to got rid of most of my other stuff, just so I could keep my books.
