DHASG September 2018 Challenge

Introduction: September is the first month of fall and the end of summer. September is the back to school month and it's time to say goodbye to vacation. But it can also be an exciting time. Let's celebrate September together!

Rules:

1, Any DHASG member can participate.
2. Sign up at any time during the month, but books must be read between 1 September and 30 September, 2018. Post when you sign up and update your progress regularly and when you finish.
3. Rereads are fine. Reads can overlap with other challenges on the group, but a book can only count once in this challenge.
3. In your stats, write your level, include book name, author, date read, and how it fits the particular challenge point.
4.Have fun!

Levels:

1. To the Nines: Read 9-12 books.
2. Hello Fall: Read 5-8 books.
3. Back to the Books: Read 3-4 books.

Categories:

1. Dancing in September: Earth, Wind and Fire's classic song has a lyric, "Dancing in September". How about you read a book where the character(s) dances in the book?
2.Read a Book Day September 6th is Read a Book Day. Do exactly that. Any book you read on September 6th counts for this part of the challenge.
3.Be Your Best Self: September is Self-Improvement Month. You can read a book that classifies as self-help or you can read a book where a character goes through a journey of self-improvement and actualization.
4.Please and Thank You: September is Courtesy Month. Read a book where a character has exquisite manners, or conversely, could stand to practice courtesy as suggested this month. Let us know which one.
5. (Don't) Be Late For Something!: September 5th is Be Late for Something Day. I don't recommend being late for appointments, except for your funeral. You could read a book where a character is habitually late, or being late is an integral part of the storyline.
6.I Beg Your Pardon!: September 8th is Pardon Day. It's a day to excuse yourself when you do something wrong, or to ask forgiveness for the harm or hurt you've done to others. Read a book where a character makes an effort to ask forgiveness for what they've done.
7.Swap Ideas and Other Things: While the holiday on September 10 is strictly about swapping ideas, how about we tackle the theme of characters who swap lives or personalities? It could be due to magical (or scientific intervention), or it could be a sort of Parent Trap/Prince and the Pauper) scenario.
8.Hispanic Heritage Month: September is Hispanic Heritage Month. Read a book that spotlights Latin American culture, or features a lead character who is of Latin American/Hispanic heritage.
9.Oh, Honey, Honey.: September is Honey Month. Read a book that represents and aspect of honey, a naturally made sweet liquid that comes from bees. Here's a sight that features information about honey: https://glorybee.com/content/honey-fa....
10.Piano Man or Woman: September is Piano Month. The piano is a classic music instrument that has a singular sound. Read a book that celebrates the piano in some way. Here are some facts about the piano: https://www.omahaschoolofmusicanddanc.... You could alternatively read a book that is named after a famous song that has a prominent piano instrumentation. Or a book where a lead character plays the piano.
11.Happy Wife, Happy Life!: The third Sunday in September is Wife Appreciation Day. Read a book where the lead character is a well-appreciated wife, or the lead character heaps appreciation on their wife.
12.School Supply Shopping: Take the following supply list and pick out the supply (holiday) that you need to be prepared for the start of school this September. Stepfamily Day, Skyscraper Day, National Women's Friendship Day, Eid-Ul-Adha, Rosh Hashanah, Autumnal Equinox, Ask a Stupid Question Day.

29443 I'm too old to be tolerant of man-babies. I'm in my forties and I like grown men who act like it. It's one thing if I'm reading YA or children's books, but if I'm reading an adult age book, I want a hero who acts his age.

I agree that character growth is good, and I'm open to flaws, but immaturity isn't something I'm that tolerant of.

Great discussion question, Natalie.

29443 I'm going to try to get back into doing challenges. I hope that some life changes will make me more able to read lately. I'll start slow.

Level: The Dog Days of Summer: 5-8 books.

1. If You're Happy and You Know It..: August is Admit You're Happy Month. To celebrate the spirit of this observation, read a book about a character's journey to happiness or read a book that makes you happy.
2.You're a Peach!: August is also Peach Month. Read a book that relates to a fact about peaches. Here's a link to some peach information: http://tonsoffacts.com/28-fun-and-int...
3.Friendship Week: Friendship Week is the 3rd week in August. Read a book that celebrates friendship.
4.Dog Days of Summer: July 3-August 11 is the time known as The Dog Days of Summer, the hottest, muggiest days of the year. Select a book that features Dog Days of Summer-worthy weather. You could also use a book with a cover that features a hot, sweaty person or persons.
5.International Clown Week: August 1-7 is the week that should strike fear in the hearts of coulrophobics. Good or bad, read a book featuring a clown, authentic, or a person who acts like a clown.
6.Sisters Day: The first Sunday in August is set aside to celebrate sisterhood. Select a book that includes a sister relationship as a prominent theme.
7.Book Lover's Day: August 9th is a day to be intentional about enjoying the hobby of reading. Books can be enjoyable and informative. You can read whatever you want on August 9th and count it for the challenge.
8.Work Smarter Not Harder: August has holidays for being lazy, relaxing, and for working like a dog. At the root is the importance of work/life balance. We can all use help with that. Read a book with a lead character who has this issue and is working through it over the course of the book.
9.The Poppy and the Peridot: August's flower is the poppy and its birthstone is the peridot. Together, they sound like a 1970s bodice ripper romance. You could read one of those, if you'd like, or you could read a book with a character named Poppy, has the flower on the cover or its about poppies, or you can read a book that represents peridots, which are a lovely, Wizard of Oz-like green (here are facts about that stone: https://www.gulfcoastcoin.com/blog/6-...).
10.Bad Poetry Day: I think I use this as a challenge every year, because it's such a great theme. Read a book for this August 18th day that has a title that sounds like bad poetry. Or has a character who writes bad poetry. :)
11.Kiss and Make Up Day: August 25th is the day to Make it Right by Making Out. Read a book with a very nice Kiss and Make Up storyline.
12.National Senior Citizen's Day: August 21st is the day to honor senior citizens. Let's do so by reading a book that shows respect for or celebrates senior citizens. You could choose one with an older lead character, or exploring a relationship between a younger person and a senior character.
