the last volume (of 3) of Jackie Leven's contract busting alter ego Sir Vincent Lone's albums - promo copy obtained in pristine sealed condition for a whole 5 euros + tax and p&p. appears the seller still has another 3 for sale.
the album doesn't have the 'flow' of his regular records, but there are some beautiful songs on here that would sit comfortably on any of his albums. i was particularly eager to hear the live version of Doll by Doll's 'An Honest Woman' in it's stripped down form, was not disappointed. as befits his generosity, there is a guest song included - a piece by a Chris Conway. just 'When The Bridegroom Comes (Songs For Women)' to get now.
Upon his death, i resolved not to rush out and buy all that i didn't have (not many, tbh), as i felt there would not be a glut of posthumous material to follow. glad i did, for it feels like getting a new Jackie album each time, and it will be a sad day when i come to the end of his songs - i like to think they're still floating around in the ether waiting to be discovered,

On-U Sound are proud to announce Midnight Scorchers by Horace Andy, a sequel to the hugely successful Midnight Rocker album. This is the ‘sound system’ take on the original sessions, featuring brand new tracks; radical dancehall re-works with guest toasters; and stripped back instrumental version excursions in deep dub reggae style.
Midnight Scorchers sees legendary Jamaican vocalist Horace Andy once again link up with UK dub innovator Adrian Sherwood. When speaking about the project Horace himself comments “Midnight Scorchers is really nice, it’s different to Midnight Rocker and more of a dub album. I’ll be sitting at home listening and full joying it on my Speaker Box dem!’" Producer Adrian Sherwood adds: “I’m very happy with the way 'Scorchers’ has turned out; for me, it’s the perfect accompaniment to Midnight Rocker. It’s not just a dub album - the new mixes, and the new tracks take it out to the sound system arena
out on 16 Sept £17 inc p&p from Bandcamp - new version of Fever available to hear (t's brilliant) - if you got prime, only £11 all in from Azamon.

To Live And Love In Levenland!
Jackie Leven - The Mystery Of Love Is Greater Than The Mystery Of Death - Expanded Edition (Cooking Vinyl 2021/22)
(2xCD available now, 2xLP from 29 July)
A fan since around 8.30pm on Mon 27 November 1978, when Doll By Doll first stepped on to the stage at the old Glasgow Apollo in support of Devo, Soaring magnificent, further events and records confirmed them as the greatest live act i ever saw. (let's cut it short here, or I'll be banging on for hours about it!). But, the Dolls disintegrated messily, car crash style, until there was nothing left.......and really, it took from then till this album in 1994 to get things back on track. all the more remarkable as the interim was filled with addiction, violence and injury (and redemption from those!).....some might even say being forwarded as a pop star by Charisma Records (2 singles and an unreleased album) was a sore low point. It certainly didn't suit him!
Cooking Vinyl took him from here to his untimely death, and proved the perfect platform for Jackie to express himself as what he was.....one of the finest song-writers to have ever trodden the sod, a true man of the soul! From a base of Scottish folk troubadour, he proceeded to build a catalogue unmatched by most, whilst remaining true to his roots as 'the wanderer'. (a real Celtic ranger?)
It's been a good year for those who keep him in their hearts, with the 'best of..' compilation 'Straight Outta Caledonia', the excellent and heartfelt tribute collection, 'The Wanderer', and this timely re-issue in expanded form (double CD in tasteful digipak, double LP on misty marbled vinyl in gatefold sleeve, both containing liner notes from his friend Ian Rankin), with the contents of 'The Right To Remain Silent - The Mystery Supplement' EP included.
This album is the accurate record of the final shredded strands of Doll By Doll, and the first of what we know to be a colossal body of work - as a writer of songs, my tuppence says that only Cohen, Cave and Walker come close to matching Leven's genius, and the focus and feeling on here determine that it's the true follow up to 'Gypsy Blood'
Ian Rankin says that this is Jackie's most Celtic album (close, but I'd say that it was 'Fairy Tales For Hard Men'), a Celtic style that is really his own stamp on his being, and the first mark of his generosity in inviting other artists to join his vision (and crediting them on the FRONT of the album covers). (again rant cut short, where i go on at length about why he was not the planet's most celebrated artist, and the sheer injustice of this!).
Highlights are many, flaws are few, and if you're reading this the chances are that you already know this and are eternally familiar with the work - if not, I'd say you owe it to yourself to apply for citizenship in Levenland. The songs herein are of a uniformly high and slightly eclectic nature, several were mainstays of Jackie's live show until he stopped performing. I'm just going to focus on the two (for me) goosebump engendering moments, both which should be imprinted into the passports of all Celts who travel far from home - the first, the real national anthem, 'Call Mother A Lonely Field' with it's irresistible rousing motif, had Scots diluting their whiskey with a sad lonely tear in 'eternal' bars worldwide, it's a calling, it's a yearning to be home, it's the no.1 song in heaven! it will certainly be played at my funeral! and if 'Heartsick Land' with it's lonesome plaintive delivery doesn't spike the lump in your throat...........you're made of brick, too hard! Both representative of recurring themes in his work....how to be a man who recognizes his feelings!
The original CD release had an empty tray where you could place the above mentioned EP when obtained/purchased (the original double LP release included this), this issue omits the need to seek this out (it is available yet, at not too extortionate prices), and it makes more sense now as a one-stop complete purchase. Despite having the appearance of bonus material, the EP shows no dropping of standards, and includes some iconic Leven songs that would've fit quite happily in the main body of the album!
In a good year in Levenland, it is my hope that Big Jackie is finally going to get the recognition and status that his genius merits. Let's have more good years in Levenland!

Anti Social Worker - Militant Business And Grime Poetry (M1 Music - 2022)
The velvet glove wields a barbed and telling flail - might be the over-riding motto of this album, a diverse and compelling set of tunes to welcome you in, before the poetry gives you a good slap, and then a bludgeoning for necessary good measure!
Anti Social Worker (Paul Wellings) has been a busy boy ('hustler, writer, MC, DJ, musician, author, freedom fighter') since 1983's 'Punky Reggae Party' record, and sees now is time for the follow up. He's not wrong - almost in some poetry blessed alignment with Atilla The Stockbroker's dub poetry album (yes, they sit well together as testaments to troubled times), punk style adopting a more relevant, and less predictable delivery! Was i perhaps expecting a lambastic Public Enemy meets The Pop Group inna 7th level of dub hell kinda thing? Mibbe, but all things considered i'm glad that's not what i got - I find the self proclaimed 'Johnny Rotten Meets The Ghetts' as a bit misleading, it's way much more and much better than that! - What i did get, and what i'm really enjoying as a uniquely presented work, is a sharp series of tunes curated and created by those with an obvious love and knowledge of black music, set out as a platform on which to ride the rhythms with biting, conscious, thought provoking words.....poetry....street poetry! it truly appears to be the year of the ranting poet.
The album commences as per my expectations with a relentless and urgent trad hip hop stomper, superbly undercut with angry rhyme - don't know if i'm suitably qualified to term the overall as Grime, but it opens proceedings with cutting intent, a purposeful manifesto. This is turned on it's head by a touching tribute to his other half over a lilting Caribbean motif, and a looping jazz piece celebrating cultural diversity, 'Real' is a statement enveloped in a gorgeous mournful surf guitar loop - eclecticism is key, as further militant business takes us to the album's centrepiece which is also the album's masterpiece - Stunning relentless, dark rolling thunder (think an urban Killing Joke) accompanies the angriest words on show on 'True News'. With age comes wisdom and the ability to rage smarter, and that's the over-riding slant to the poetry for me, as well as the subtle interweaving of autobiographical elements - It's a very engaging narrative......forward, considered and spittingly belligerent when it needs to be! Skeletal hip hop takes us through a roll call of 'Rebels', mellow B&D for the incisive 'War Inna Ghetto', before 'East Is East' jacks things up urgently and into the Covid hymn, 'The Masked Spitter', which doesn't fail to hit it's target. 'Street Heat' winds things up in lazy jazz style over a recollective, but no less angry, piece......But wait! a bonus track, which might be just the telling of a joke, a funny joke, but not a new joke, but it may be that the old ones are the best....huh?
It seems that this is an album not enough people are going to get to hear, and to be heard is what it needs. It can be bought direct from M1 Music (see following link), but too few other sources. A lot's gone into this work, and i've got a lot out of it, so i'm seriously recommending that you get yourself a copy - It'll do you good!
