24794 Wow Everyman, thank you for all the back history about Ransome and his book. I love info like that! It is great! Thanks again!
Must ask did you do it yesterday, when the site had maintenace? I tried to put stuff in then and it was lost also, makes you want to pull out your hair!

24794 Welcome Carmania! I hope that you enjoy it! It is nice to read with others and get their perspectives on things, it helps me quite a bit!
A schedule is really helpful with the longer books, I only have a Kindle edition-does anyone have the actual book? If so, we could just split it up similar to the book. I will start with a discussion thread for Chpts 1-10 and when we get the actual breakup of the book then I can fine tune it from there.

24794 After finishing the book, I must say that my idea of the hound changed. I would have to agree with you Jim, that the hound seems more of a deterrent to firefighters than to the general public.
Ah, reality TV, that is a really good comparison. I must admit I have watched my fair share, but now it seems to dominate every channel and getting rather silly.
I had forgotten about The Book of Eli, that is similar in that regard.
24794 What does everyone think of Francisco d'Anconia?
24794 I have now seen reference to this book multiple times over this weekend. Makes me curious as to what comes ahead.

24794 Hard to believe that July is here already, but this book is now the monthly group read. I hope that you enjoy it! Can't wait to start this one.

24794 I was wondering since Middlemarch is a longer book and the summer seems to be busy for most people, would anyone be interested in having it go for two months and then start in September with the nominations?
24794 I'm on chapter three right now and must say that I'm not impressed with Reardon's family right now. I'm liking Dagny very much, she seems like a fun and interesting character that I can't wait to see what will happen to her. I'm rather startled to read some of the similar arguments about aspects of society has not changed in this amount of time.

24794 I finally finished this last night and was surprised at the ending of the book. It went in a direction that I was not expecting, that is for sure. I found it interesting that the ultimate start of the cleansing of the cities occurred by fire. Well, it was by bombs, but a similar cause. It is easy to forget that fires can be a cleansing force in nature. Living in Colorado, it is heart-wrenching to see the loss of so many homes and human lives that have been affected by the forest fires, but these fires are also cleaning out thousands of beetle-killed trees, shrubs and I have been told that loggerhead pinecones can only open up under the intense heat of a fire.
I also liked the idea of remembering every book that you have read and being able to train your brain to remember all that. Reminds me of the movie, Phenonmenon with John Travolta. You never know what your mind is capable of until you push it or lose it.

24794 I had a conversation with my librarian and she had just taken over this job from a woman who was in her 90's when she retired. As this new librarian was going through the shelves, she was appalled to find The Story of Little Black Sambo still on the shelves. She did remove it from circulation. In light of this book, what does everyone think about culling "offensive" books from library circulation or from bookstores?

Right! Comparing it to 1984, there is no government entity forming and enf..."

Exactly, I kept waiting for something to happen to Guy and Faber when they were talking. Especially, with the introduction of the mechanical dog, which seems to sniff out books. Actually, I'm not quite sure what the purpose of the dog is supposed to be. It is alluded to often, but so far it does not seem to be much of a threat, well except for rats and cats.

24794 I'm about 1/2 way through so far(gotta love kid's baseball season!), and I do find it strange that there is not more references to a government response. Maybe, that was the point.
