Check me if I'm wrong, Dale, but based on the recent May-June Editors' Choice Awards, the stories most likely to win (if fact, I get the feeling it's almost an unwritten rule of the competition for those seeking this award) are those that address/incorporate directly the photo of the week. It's not enough to use the keyword; rather, the closer you can get to incorporating the actual photo prompt into your flash fiction piece, the better chance you stand of gaining favor with the editors. Is this your observation?

Once a week, but practice at least an hour a day, every day. Went back to the violin 11 years ago after a 50-year break.

Sounds like fun. I've written several flash fiction stories that are essentially jokes or puns, and you're correct...they're a blast to write. Not everything has to be deadly serious.
Good luck with the novel.

Must be the ones that live in Chicago! hahahaha The only way people can vote for you or themselves multiple times is to use different computers not linked to the same modem/wi-fi. I'm sure there are ways to cheat the system, which is a flaw in the Popular Vote system used by IU. I can tell you and Alyssa and I have a fair number of people who read our books and receive our announcements. They account for the votes we receive, in the main, though there may be others we don't know who frequent IU and vote for us as well. Like you, we truly covet the Editors' Choice Awards.

I always go over the maximum word limits and as per the statement below -- that happens!!! And some out there ..."
Dale's on to something here. I love this genre...in fact, I almost daily troll the many photo boards on the Internet (Pinterest and others, Big Stock Photo, WikiCommons, etc.) looking for photo prompts, frequently writing at least one, and sometimes as many as three, flash fiction stories a day. He's correct...you can write one in an hour or less, and they don't all have to be serious. In fact, writing a flash fiction story story, in many ways, is like telling a joke (as they're noted on IU). Both comprise a plot, characters, hook, and slam-bang finish.
I've already assembled a collection of 73 such stories (some used in IU competition) that will be released on February 5, 2018. A second anthology is now in preparation. To me, it's almost like my "daily crossword puzzle" in terms of keeping my mind active. And it certainly does help to keep your writing skills honed.
By the way, I've recommended to the local high school where I guest lecture on mystery writing that they use the IU Flash Fiction technique to teach short-story writing. I've also suggested it to some elementary school teachers I know. I think a picture is far better at stimulating students' minds than is a word prompt.

I'm not on Facebook, so I couldn't log in. If you'll shoot me a few via PM, I'll shoot them some info. Thanks.

This is terrific. Susan and I were in a local elementary school last week speaking to 80 kindergartners about bullying. We need all the attention we can muster on this subject.
Thanks, Carole.

It's an immutable law of Nature. You can send them a note and ask Kat or Kyle to correct it. Just use the Contact facility. They are very nice about that.
