The Recovery of Dennis “Tink” Bell’s Remains

Those of you who have read Book 2 of my Antarctic Trilogy, Unfinished Business: Pursuit of an Antarctic Killer, may recall this poignant exchange between Master John Williams of the British Antarctic Survey supply and research vessel John Biscoe and Captain Roberto Muñoz of the Chilean oceangoing tug Lientur:

“Captain Muñoz, it is with great honor, and some sadness, that on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second and the British Antarctic Survey, I return to you the personal belongings of Chilean Navy Lieutenant-Commander Cristian Barbudo.”
“Master Williams, on behalf of the Chilean Navy and the Commodore of the 17th Chilean Expedition to the Antarctic, I gratefully accept the return of Lieutenant-Commander Cristian Barbudo’s personal possessions.”
Master Williams handed Captain Muñoz the leather-covered box, whereupon they saluted. Then, everyone sat down again.
Muñoz opened the box. In it, on royal blue velvet with gold piping around the edge, were the personal belongings that had been recovered. Also included was a statement on official parchment addressed to the Admiral of the Chilean Navy, conveying to the Chilean Government the items found. The statement included the date, time, and location of the findings as well as a list of the items. It was signed by the Master of the John Biscoe on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second and the British Antarctic Survey.
Muñoz put the parchment back in the box and slowly closed the lid. He sat there for a moment, deep in thought.
It was Master Williams who broke the silence. “You know, Roberto, I think the worst thing that can happen to anyone is losing a friend and not having the opportunity to say goodbye. These islands and the shores of the Antarctic Peninsula, not to mention the Peninsula itself, are dotted with memorials to friends of mine, some of whom I had known for decades. They were good men . . . scientists and engineers, explorers and adventurers . . . all drawn to the Frozen Continent by the challenges it posed. Some came to work, others to escape something or someone in their former lives . . . perhaps a dead-end career or a failed romance . . . you-name-it.
“But here is one of the last places on Earth where men can test their mettle against Nature and show the world, if not themselves, what they are made of. Tragically, some never make it home. I remember Oliver Burd, Michael Green, Eric Platt, Arthur Farrant, Ronald Napier, Stanley Black, David Statham, Geoffrey Stride, Alan Sharman, Dennis Bell—who can forget ‘Tink’? —and just last year, Roger Filer. Aye, good men, they were.” He lowered his head.
“So, like you, Roberto, I have my memories of friends long gone. It’s part of life . . . an unfortunate part, to be sure. You’re lucky, though. At least you can bring the commander’s widow some consolation. Having that picture of his two daughters returned will, I’m sure, bring her great comfort.”
The silence in the room was broken only by the sound of the ship’s chronometer sounding the hour.

_____________________________________________________

As is the case with many of my stories, there’s more truth than fiction to be had at times. And so it was with the men who Master Williams named as having met their tragic deaths on the Frozen Continent, Dennis “Tink” Bell among them.
Recently, however, as a result of climate change and the melting experienced in the Antarctic region, the ice has given up Tink’s body. As described by the British Antarctic Survey on August 11, 2025 (https://www.bas.ac.uk/media-post/rema...

“The remains of an Antarctic researcher have been discovered by a Polish team among rocks exposed by a receding glacier in Antarctica. They are identified by DNA as those of Dennis ‘Tink’ Bell, a 25-year-old meteorologist who was working for the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), the predecessor of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). He died in a crevasse on a glacier at Admiralty Bay on King George Island, situated off the Antarctic Peninsula on 26 July 1959. His body was never recovered.
“Over 200 personal items have been found, including the remains of radio equipment, a flashlight, ski poles, an inscribed Erguel wristwatch, a Swedish Mora knife, ski poles and an ebonite pipe stem.”

Perhaps the remains of other explorers soon will surface as well, including that of Carl Robert Disch from Monroe, WI, an ionospheric physicist employed by the National Bureau of Standards. Disch disappeared on May 8, 1965, near Byrd Station in Antarctica while walking between two buildings during a blizzard. This was at a time when I believe the author was completing his work leading to a doctorate in geophysics at the University of Wisconsin’s Geophysical and Polar Research Center.

The Collected Works of Prof Emil Heisseluft – 2nd Edition —"live" on April 4, 2024

The Collected Works of Prof. Emil Heisseluft – 2nd Edition
April Fools’ Humor for Amateur (Ham) Radio
April 4, 2024

Sadly, I must be the bearer of bad news: CQ magazine ceased publication in the fall of 2023 (with the October, 2023, edition, to be exact). While publisher Dick Ross, K2MGA, continues his quest to find a buyer of the magazine—a once vibrant voice of Ham Radio that appealed mostly to the operators and contesters among us—today we are left only with the library created by the many thousands of authors who, since 1945, graced the pages of this pioneering journal with their carefully crafted and insightful compositions on matters pertaining to contests, DXpeditions, propagation, and awards, among myriad other topics.
Professor Emil Heisseluft, Lauton Institute, Grossmaul-an Der Donau, Austria, of course, was no slouch when it
came to providing material for the pages of CQ. His articles—always found in an April issue—span a period of more than 40 years, first appearing in the April 1976 issue. The entire suite of April Fool articles from 1976 through 2002 comprises the First Edition of this book. However, given what has happened to CQ magazine, however, this seems like a good time to update this anthology with the 2023 April Fool article as well as the article intended for the April 2024 issue of CQ that, alas, never saw the light of day.

It's been a hoot, as they say. Thanks for riding along with us.

I hope you enjoy all this anthology and would love to hear what you think of the stories. And, as always, reviews are welcomed with open arms!

How to Outline, Write, and Review Government Proposals that WIN!

Winning v3 - 2-17-2024_page-0001

This is to announce the release of Winning Proposals: How to Outline, Write, and Review Government Proposals that WIN! by Theodore Jerome Cohen, PhD.
This volume, first published as a corporate handbook in 1990, comprises both the essence of what it takes to write a winning proposal as well as warnings as to how you can avoid the pitfalls that lead to failure. Importantly, the methods described can be applied regardless of whether you are bidding on a contract to develop the next-generation electromagnetic system used to launch aircraft from a carrier or one for the management of a contract for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The techniques are equally applicable whether your customer is the federal government, a state agency, or a local government. All use competitive procurements to obtain products and services, which means they issue Requests for Proposals (RFPs) on a routine basis. This volume will give you the tools needed not only to participate in these procurements, but most importantly, to WIN!

For more than five decades, first as a scientist, then as an officer in several defense corporations, and finally as a consultant to a Fortune 300 company working in the areas of defense, homeland security, and anti-terrorism, Dr. Cohen served as a proposal writer, book boss (manager), proposal manager, and reviewer of hundreds of proposals ranging in value from as little as $50,000 to as much as $20 billion. During that time, he gained a reputation as a superior writer/manager who was sought after for his ability to “bring home the bacon.” In fact, during his last six years as a consultant, he served in one capacity or another on more than $40 billion* in WINS on contracts awarded to my major client by such entities as the US military services and NASA.

The Antarctic Chronicles: And Related Stories of Mystery, Mayhem, and Murder

Antarctic front cover v4(1)

This is to announce the release of The Antarctic Chronicles: And Related Stories of Mystery, Mayhem, and Murder , by Theodore Jerome Cohen.

From December 1961 through early March 1962, the author participated in the 16th Chilean Expedition to the Antarctic. In recognition of his work, the US Board of Geographic Names in October, 1964, named the geographical feature Cohen Islands, located at 63° 18' S. latitude, 57° 53' W. longitude in the Cape Legoupil area, Antarctica, in his honor. The 4 months he spent “on the ice” were perhaps the most exciting—and challenging—of his life. They involved episodes of high adventure, many of which he captured in his book Cold Blood: The Antarctic Murders Trilogy. The instant volume, The Antarctic Chronicles, is intended as a distillation of the trilogy’s more exciting stories, comprising tales of mystery, mayhem, and murder in South America and the Antarctic. Like the making of great cognac, wherein wine is double distilled in an intense process unique to this variety of brandy, he now has selected for publication here those stories he thinks will give you, the reader, the best understanding of what scientists and explorers face when attempting to work on the Frozen Continent.

Theodore Jerome Cohen is an award-winning author who previously has published more than ten novels—all but one of them mystery/thrillers—two short-story anthologies, twenty flash fiction anthologies, and one Young Adult (YA) mystery/thriller written under the pen name Alyssa Devine. During his 45-year career he has worked as an engineer, scientist, CBS Radio Station News Service (RSNS) commentator, private investigator, and Antarctic explorer. What he’s been able to do with his background is mix fiction with reality in ways even his family and friends have been unable to unravel!
