The Collected Works of Prof Emil Heisseluft —"live" on April 18, 2022

Heisseluft_anthology_cover_v16_-_4-17-2022-page-0

For more than 45 years, and always in an April issue, CQ magazine (a publication for the Amateur/Ham Radio, CB, and Shortwave communities)) has carried intriguing communications/electronics-related articles written by Theodore Jerome Cohen using the pen name “Professor Emil Heisseluft.” Generally instructive, at times infuriating—one screed he penned so inflamed the Amateur Radio community that our readers tied up the phone lines complaining to CQ, the ARRL, and the FCC for three days—but always engaging, Professor Heisseluft has provided our readers with more than a few laughs in a month known for its absurd tricks. Former CQ magazine editor Alan Dorhoffer, K2EEK (SK), once remarked: “A Heisseluft piece isn’t worth a tinker’s dam unless at least five people cancel their subscriptions.” Alas, on that basis, the good professor struck gold more often than not.
Reviewers Said This:

“This is bull****. Cancel my subscription to CQ immediately! – John F., WA4---

“Hahahahaha…one of the best pieces of humor I’ve seen in years. Can’t wait to see who took the bait!” – MaryJo L., K2---

“Wow! I wonder how many fell for this one?” – Bill A., N5---

“You Yankees sure know how to get the muppets’ blood to a boil!” – Hardy P., G5--

“I’m really concerned about what the FCC is planning to do. Should we should be writing the Commission to stop them from requiring psychological tests for amateur applicants?”, – Bobby S., W6---

I hope you enjoy all of this anthology and would love to hear what you think of the stories. And, as always, reviews are welcomed with open arms!

Beware Those Closest: The Screenplay

Beware_Those_Closest-_v3_brt_red_-_Final(1)

A frequent theme that threads its way among my various books and stories is the following: “Beware those closest to you; they can do the most damage.”

You’ll find this admonition served up by major character in my Antarctic Murders Trilogy as well as by Homicide Detective Louis Martelli, NYPD, in the murder mystery series in which he is featured. Thus, I have used it as the title for this movie script, which is based on my novel House of Cards: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

About the book:

Who Killed Matthew B. Richardson III? Banksters or Islamic Terrorists?

Gary Sorkin for Pacific Book Review said: "Cohen's style is not unlike that found in novels by authors such as Dan Brown, or Tom Clancy, or even the late Michael Crichton." Here, the head of one of the largest investment banking and securities firms in the United States has been assassinated on Times Square in the middle of New York City's annual celebration of Halloween, the Festival of the Dead. Louis Martelli, NYPD, is one of the first detectives on the scene. The case rapidly spirals downward into a maelstrom of death and intrigue linked both to the financial meltdown of 2008 and international terrorism. Who was behind the murders, and why did the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) attempt to shut down Martelli's investigation before it even got started? Martelli eventually learns the answers to these and other questions, but not before discovering how two Wall Street financial institutions have been complicit in funding Islamic terrorism.

As was the case for the screenplay Death by Wall Street, which also is available in paperback format, once I completed a good first draft of the screenplay for Beware Those Closest, I again hired Howard Allen, the so-called Script Doctor, to “scrub” the document.

https://scriptdoctor.com/the-scriptdo...

Howard has worked for years as a professional actor, playwright, director, screenwriter and literary manager/dramaturg as well as a reporter, reviewer and editor in his journalistic career. I loved working with him, and I found our interactions most pleasant . . . and instructive. To say my screenplay benefited from his sharp red pencil is an understatement. He did not disappoint. (Ouch!)

And again, being a glutton for punishment, I submitted the edited and revised text to an American Zoetrope Screenplay Competition judged by Francis Ford Coppola. Alas, there was no joy in Mudville.

Still, the exercise acted to improve my dialogue writing skills. And I hope it will bring you both pleasure and insight as you explore for yourself how to create a screenplay from one of your novels or help a friend create a movie script for one of his books.

Death by Wall Street: The Screenplay

Cover_w_black_borderand_film

Let’s be honest: who among us, having penned a novel, be it a romance, mystery/thriller, or whatever, hasn’t had visions of a screenplay based on our book dance in our head?

I certainly have, beginning with my first book, a fictionalized autobiography titled Full Circle. But after writing my second novel, a mystery/thriller titled Death by Wall Street: Rampage of the Bulls,, the urge to see my story on the Silver Screen grew even greater. Sure, there were any number of publication houses who offered to create the screenplay for me and even shop the script around. (Amazing, isn’t it, how many people are out there, ready and willing to separate us from our money!) But being a writer, I thought it might be both interesting and instructive to attempt the “conversion” from novel to screenplay by myself.

And so, tapping into the knowledge available on the internet, my “go to” source of information when I have a question on any topic, and having purchased a copy of Final Draft, which is billed as the “Professional Scriptwriting Software,” I set off on my quest to create the perfect screenplay.

It took a while to familiarize myself the software, but persistence paid off. Soon I had what appeared, at least to me, to be a respectable script. My next move was to hire an editor. Here, I chose Howard Allen, the so-called Script Doctor.

https://scriptdoctor.com/the-scriptdo...

Once Howard worked his magic, I hired Charlie Barrett in Hollywood to “shop” the screenplay around. Despite Charlie’s best efforts, he wasn’t able to get anyone to catch our script as it flew over their transom. I had no luck, either, when I entered the screenplay in the American Zoetrope Screenplay Competition judged by Francis Ford Coppola. But then, you don’t have to think very hard to imagine the competition this contest draws!

Still, I have no regrets. The experience gained from creating my screenplay, together with Howard Allen’s editing, assisted me in taking my dialogue-writing skills to a whole other level, and for that, I’m eternally grateful.

For those writers (or even readers) interested in how a story can be taken from a book to a screenplay, reading both the novel and my script for Death by Wallstreet might be just the thing for a cold winter night next to the fire or better, a nice hot day at the beach.

Oh, and by the way, the closest things this book probably will get to the Silver Screen are the TWO book trailers I wrote and contracted to have created for it. You will find at these URL’s:

You can still have a lot of fun without spending $100 million on a film!

Mementos: A Unique Collection of Short Stories & Flash Fiction - Book 4—"live" on October 28, 2021

Mementos_4_-_Cover_v5_-_Viner_font_-_7_-_1_-2021-page0001

This is to announce the release of the fourth book in the Mementos Anthologies series, Mementos: A Unique Collection of Short Stories & Flash Fiction - Book 4 , by Theodore Jerome Cohen.

People simply can’t get enough of the short stories and flash fiction from the creative mind of Theodore Jerome Cohen. What surprises many are the photographic prompts he uses as inspiration for his tales . . . stories that span the spectrum of genres from romance to murder mysteries, and from historical fiction to the paranormal.

When talking to readers, he is often asked: “Why do you use photographic prompts when you write short stories and flash fiction?” His response can be found in the words of Larry Sultan, an American photographer from the San Fernando Valley in California: “Photography is there to construct the idea of us as a great family and we go on vacations and take these pictures and then we look at them later and we say, ‘Isn't this a great family?' So photography is instrumental in creating family not only as a memento, a souvenir, but also a kind of mythology.” Said Cohen: “Beyond the physical, however, lie our memories and in them, the pictures stored in our minds’ eyes. As writers, aren’t these memories—both the physical and the ‘mementos of the mind’—the essence of our works, the prompts we use to spin words and phrases into literary tapestries our readers can use to discover something about life, a bit about us, perhaps, and, in the process, maybe even a little about themselves?”

In this volume, you’ll find a story about an FBI agent who ended up accidentally, on purpose, dead. In another tale, we wait with Mildred, an elderly woman suffering from Alzheimer’s, her son, and her daughter-in-law at Gate 6 in Philadelphia International Airport for Mildred’s husband’s plane to arrive. How long must they wait? And what are we to make of the true origins of the Broadway play West Side Story. You may be surprised to learn the production almost never happened. In short (pun intended), there is something in this book for almost every genre and taste.

I hope you enjoy all of these anthologies and would love to hear what you think of the stories. You can write to me via my Website. And, as always, reviews are welcomed with open arms!

You’ll find Book 4 on Amazon.com at the URL below:

If you’d like to read one of the stories in Book 4, visit the book’s Webpage on my Website, and click on the hotlink for “View an Excerpt.” There, you’ll find a “Christmas letter” that bears a close resemblance to one written by a dear friend of author’s that is strikingly different from the type of letter you receive from friends and relatives during the holidays.

Second Edition of Popular Mystery/Thriller Now Available

New Edition of Popular Novel —"live" on July 27, 2021

House_of_Cards_-_2nd_Ed_-_cover_-_v2

Just a short note to announce the release of the Second Edition of House of Cards: Dead Men Tell No Tales. This is Book 2 in the Detective Louis Martelli, NYPD, Mystery/Thriller Series. The First Edition was released in 2011. Alas, that paperback edition has been out-of-print for at least 4 years, so, with the exception of an occasional used copy that may appear from time to time, Martelli fans seeking a paperback copy of this popular novel have been pretty much left empty-handed.

Now there’s another solution to this problem: a Second Edition of the novel is readily available from Amazon. It can be recognized by its strikingly new red cover and wall-to-wall house of cards. While the interior has been redesigned, the story is the same thrilling police procedural that enjoyed so many great reviews.

Here’s the description of the book as found on Amazon:

Who Killed Matthew B. Richardson III?

Banksters or Islamic Terrorists?

"Cohen's style is not unlike that found in novels by authors such as Dan Brown, or Tom Clancy, or even the late Michael Crichton." Gary Sorkin for Pacific Book Review. The head of one of the largest investment banking and securities firms in the United States has been assassinated on Times Square in the middle of New York City's annual celebration of Halloween, the Festival of the Dead. Louis Martelli, NYPD, is one of the first detectives on the scene. The case rapidly spirals downward into a maelstrom of death and intrigue linked both to the financial meltdown of 2008 and international terrorism. Who is behind the murders, and why is the FBI attempting to shutdown Martelli's investigation before it even can get started? Martelli eventually learns the answers to these and other questions, but not before discovering how two Wall Street financial institutions have been complicit infunding Islamic terrorism. (Adult language)

By the way, the books in this series may be read in any order.

Flash Fiction Stories on Love and Devotion

Creative Ink, Flashy Fiction —Book 20—"live" on July 24, 2021

Love_Flash_Fiction_cover_-_v1_-_gold_border1-page0001

This is to announce the release of the 20th book in our Flash Fiction Anthology series, Flash Fiction Stories On Love and Devotion, by Theodore Jerome Cohen and Alyssa Devine. (Know that Alyssa Devine is a pen name used by Theodore Jerome Cohen for Young Adult (YA) and some other writings.)

Of all the literary classics I remember reading in my English classes at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the late 1950s, To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvel is one of the poems that still stands out in my mind. And while the 45 stories here, which in one way or another relate to love and devotion, may not be as eloquently written as the works of Marvel, I hope you will find each one satisfying in its own right. The tales primarily were selected from among the 438 stories found in Books 1 through 6, incl., of my Creative Ink, Flashy Fiction anthologies. Included, as well, are selected offerings from my two short-story anthologies, The Road Less Taken, as well as stories from my Mementos series of anthologies. Many of the stories in the instant volume are 250 words or fewer in length. They are best compared to a handful of peanuts or M&M’s. Which is to say, they’re tiny, bite-sized morsels that won’t let you stop with one! The longer tales were added for those who seek something more substantial with which to curl up on a long winter night or better, on a beach in the hot summer sun.

If you like your fiction entwined with fact (“faction”), this collection is for you! Theodore Jerome Cohen is an award-winning author who has published more than ten novels—all but one of them mystery/thrillers—multiple flash-fiction and short-story anthologies, and one Young Adult (YA) mystery/thriller (published under the pen name Alyssa Devine). During his 45-year career he has worked as an engineer, scientist, CBS Radio Station News Service (RSNS) commentator, private investigator, US Army officer (CPT, Corps of Engineers), and Antarctic explorer. What he’s been able to do with his background is mix fiction with reality in ways even his family and friends have been unable to unravel!

I hope you enjoy all of these anthologies and would love to hear what you think of the stories. You can write to me via my website. And, as always, reviews are welcomed with open arms!

You’ll find Book 20 on Amazon.com at the URL below:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09B5M622Y
If you’d like to read one of the stories in Book 20, visit the book’s Webpage on my Website, and click on the hotlink for “View an Excerpt.” There, you’ll find a humorous story about a couple posing for pictures in a Victorian photobooth.
