When I've come to a point where I can't 'find' that first sentence or just the 'right' word, I put in a place holder (often just 'xxxxx') and barrel ahead. To those who stare at a blank piece of paper because they can't write the first sentence, I say, type the second sentence. Seriously! Just start writing. Write whatever comes to your mind. You can rewrite it, organize it, do whatever you want to it later. Just get something down on paper and get the process underway. You'll be surprised how the story will unfold.(less)

Nothing is more off-putting for a reader than to see something an author has penned they know is not true. You may be writing fiction, but unless it's science fiction, it must have elements of real life embedded throughout the story. I would estimate I spend at least half of the time I write doing research, just to ensure the facts are correct. In my novel House of Cards, a body floats in on the tide. If you were to check when and where I wrote the body floated in against the area's tidal records, you would find they matched. I'm a stickler for things like that. The realism in my books is what makes my readers say the novels could have been 'ripped from the headlines.'

Second, listen, listen, listen to how people converse. It will give you a leg up when it comes to writing dialogue. And if you want to have some fun while sitting in a restaurant or in the airport, pick out a couple and imagine, given a hypothetical situation (arguing over the cost of dinner or a visit to her mother), what they are saying. It's great practice for writing dialogue in your next book.(less)

Bobish: A book review

This poetic tour de force by Magdalena Ball is more than an historical verse memoir of her great-grandmother Rebecca Lieberman; it is reverent, loving homage to a woman who, in fact, represents millions upon millions of Jewish men and women forced from their homes by their oppressors, eventually to wash up on the shores of America in the great emigration from Europe than began in the middle of the Read more of this blog post »

Theodore Cohen Hi, Aine...

Great that you're feeling better. Okay, not in the US. I understand. Hope you continue to mend.

Áine Hello Ted, thank you for the friends request. I'm unfortunately not in the USA but thank you very much. I am finally feeling better today too but I've been listening to books the last few days which I enjoy just as much as reading with my eyes
