185 Sorry I can't link this because I'm on my phone.

Your book wouldn't happen to be Island of the Aunts by Eva Ibbotson, would it?
185 I don't know if this is it (I couldn't find a good plot description online, sorry!) but I found a possibility. The cover is small, but looks like a boy with glasses who is mowing the lawn! (haha) Published 1983ish.

Time's Up! by Florence Parry Heide. Time's Up by Florence Parry Heide

Worldcat description: Noah is afraid that life in the suburbs will be boring until he meets a clever girl named Bib and an unusual house painter named Bruce Dooster.
Google description: Noah expects a lonely summer because his mother never listens to him, his dad always gives him chores, and he is friendless in a new neighborhood, but the summer surprises him.

EDIT: looks like there's a sequel too: Time Flies!.
185 Did this mystery have ghosts in it? Or was it more realistic - just figuring out the mystery of the dead girl?
185 I think I found it! Childsong
185 It was non-fiction and fantasy? Can you remember what else happened in the books?
185 A few more suggestions then!:

Bad Apple
Between the Lines
Seeing Cinderella

185 I don't know the collection you're talking about, but that Chinese tale is The Weaver Girl and the Cowherd (and there are also Japanese & Korean variants). Maybe that could help?

185 Could it be a book by Finn Zetterholm? Julia's reis maybe?
185 I'm pretty sure that's The Great Good Thing!
185 Two suggestions:

The Ghost in the Third Row (this is more likely to be it)
Stage Fright
185 I have a few suggestions:

The Ghost of Thomas Kempe
Poor Tom's Ghost
Ghost Cadet

And maybe take a look at this List?

By the way, was this a children's book? I assumed it was, but I suppose you could have snuck an adult book to read (haha).
185 No problem! I'm glad you found it!

I have read a similar chick-lit book before, P.S. I Love You. They made a movie of that one, but I didn't think the movie was particularly good.
185 Good Grief by Lolly Winston

Good Grief by Lolly Winston

I haven't read it, but I definitely have seen the cover before! Right when you described the pink slippers I knew what you were talking about.
185 Enter Three Witches by Kate Gilmore?

edit:
I found a really old website for the author. The first part of the book is on it.

185 It's not the Wrinkle in Time series is it? That's a children's fantasy series with a main character named Meg. She does travel to other worlds (though I don't remember a lighthouse...but I've only read the first two books recently)
185 Or maybe Petrified by Joseph Locke

Worldcat description: Leslie, Erika, Lynda and Bret return to the old Waxhouse museum for a reunion six years after they each moved away. But someone is in the museum with the girls--someone who wants to hurt them.

Google Books description: The eerie wax figures of Dracula, Tom Cruise, Mark Twain, and Genghis Khan seem to come alive when four friends return to their favorite hangout--the old Waxhouse Museum--for a reunion six years after they each moved away. But the noises and movements aren't just figments of their imaginations.
