185 Another guess: Since You Went Away: Letters to a Soldier from his Wife Although she's in Ohio, not NY.
185 Alvin's Swap Shop?

""Alvin Fernald has a knack for coming up with great schemes and falling into adventure. That's why when he starts a swap shop that allows his friends to trade their junk for other kids' oddities, none of his friends are surprised when he finds Pim, a young island boy, hiding in his shop. Pim is running from a gang of thieves who believe he possesses something very valuable. As Alvin, his best friend Shoie, and his sister Daphne try to discover what treasure Pim is carrying, they use the junk in the swap shop to set a trap for the thieves and make them sorry they ever messed with the Magnificent Brain of Alvin Fernald! "

I found another discussion board where someone described the book thusly:

"A story about a kid who trades junk in the playground, marbles and such..., but strangely he notices people following him and his friends, things go missing and his cubbyhouse is ransacked etc.. and the situation gets quite scarey as kids are injured through a series of accidents (swings breaking, wheels falling off the billy cart etc...),
It turns out that they unknowingly have a very valuable (stolen) stamp hidden in one of their swaps, and a bunch of criminals want it back....In the end the stamp was found nestled deep inside a seashell"

185 Rachel, I just took another look at the link you provided in your first post, and the picture books of Gerald McDermott came to mind.
185 Even if you subscribe to the thread, you will not receive a notification when a previous post has been edited. Notifications are only sent when new messages are added to the thread. Is that what you were asking?

And here's the newly-created GR link: Norah and the Cable Car
185 Serendi, I don't believe notifications are sent when comments are edited. Good find! I'll create a GR record for Norah and the Cable Car.
185 You're welcome! Happy to help.
185 Sounds like Same Difference
185 The Alice Hoffman book this most resembles is The Probable Future but I don't think it's an exact match.
185 Has Dark Lord been mentioned yet?
185 Not an exact match, but A Yellow Raft in Blue Water is a tale of three generations of women and the book is divided into three parts, each telling a different generation's story. It goes backwards in time, though, starting with the granddaughter's story and moving back.
185 Flute Song Magic?

On Nevlin, where it is forbidden to speak to the lower classes, High Noble Flutirr risks all to befriend Don, whose beautiful flute music makes Flutirr question the values of his own people.

185 This isn't exactly what you described, but was the first thing that came to mind:

185 I'll take care of it for you, Courteney. Glad you found your book! :)

And here's the GR link: The Lost Mind
185 Angel City by Patrick Smith?
