Forbidden Doors was a YA Christian series like that. They were "Written to combat the influence of the occult on today's kids"

Your description of the cover made me think of 33 Snowfish -- I haven't read it but the description sort of fits.



ETA: I just pulled the book off the shelf and the first sentence is: "On top of everything else, Boobie's got the clap." So I think this might be it.

You're welcome! I read it around the same time, and loved the cover - I copied it for a high school art project. That bit about the angels saying "shhh" always stuck with me, too.
