185 Celandine, maybe? or its companion, The Various, which has a more purplish cover.
185 It's probably not this one either, since it's set in the US and the ghost is from the Civil War, but it has the "new kid in school" thing so worth throwing out there: The Backyard Ghost
185 Glad you found it, Rae! Here's the link to the first in the series : You Don't Know Jack
185 Maybe the Tomorrow Girls series? The first one is Behind the Gates Behind the Gates (Tomorrow Girls, #1) by Eva Gray
185 Possibly Shine ?
185 Glad you found it! Here's the link to the first in the series: Secret Lives

I'll moved this to solved.

185 Or possibly Two from Galillee?
185 Maybe Witch ?

If this isn't it, can you let us know what "a long time ago" means to you? :) It's most helpful if you can give a range of years during which you think you read it.

185 Possibility: Where'd You Get the Gun, Billy?

Amazon has a pic of another version of the cover that is mostly blue and black: https://www.amazon.com/Whered-You-Get...
185 Possibly something by Gordon Korman?
185 I don't think any of them were set in the UK, but Harriet May Savitz wrote several books about wheelchair-bound teens during that time period. It may be worth checking out her titles.
185 This might be Liar Liar. One of the user reviews says, "Ross enters the other world through a "portal" in the pool, but then he "slips" in and out a few times before he gets trapped"
