185 Yay! You're welcome, glad I could help.
185 Maybe The Key to Rondo. Not all the details match but in case you are misremembering....
185 There is a scene in Crusader where the MC uses cold cream to take off the makeup that, while she was wearing it, her father walked in and saw her, realized that she looked like her dead mother, his dead wife.

It's also set in Florida and the MC works at her father's arcade in a mall.
185 Possibly Long Night Dance
185 Bert - was Angel posting on your behalf? Only the OP can confirm/deny
185 I think this is The Ex
185 Link for Alix's suggestion: Song for Eloise
185 I *think* this might be Crusader
185 I don't think it's Secret Life of Bees unless the OP is conflating two titles. The MC of Bees killed her mother accidentally during a domestic violence situation.
185 You're welcome! I also read it as a kid in the mid-70s and it sticks in my mind as the first book I was too scared to finish. FYI -- Lois Duncan released an "updated" version in 2011, in which the MC has a cell phone, but there's no service at the school. :D
185 Sounds like Down a Dark Hall

Edit: I just pulled my copy off the shelf and confirmed the details you gave. Best friends apply for same school but only MC gets in, weird school with paranormal stuff happening, fire at the end, saved by father's ghost.

185 Massive, maybe?
185 Selby, it looks like you accidentally posted this three times. I'm going to delete the other posts to eliminate confusion!
185 You're welcome!
185 Hah, ok, then clearly I've conflated two threads! Oh well, here's a bump for you, then. :)
185 Sam, did you post this query another time, with additional info about the girl hating the mother's boyfriend, who sarcastically called her a "rare and precious jewel"? I'm trying to find that thread, because that scene is definitely in Not Just Sugar And Spice - which also fits the rest of your description, just not the "Lord and Master" line.
185 And possibly The Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause
