Ryan, I really agree with your last line!
The thing about "man up" that also gives me the itchies is that it's centering around men, and you really can't use it for everyone not-man, in my opinion, and it is really exclusive therefore.

179584 The one about the sea is really great, really:)

I also happened to read much into the night - must have been 3 o'clock in the morning.

You have a point here, Emma!

179584 @Eternal: You could, as Meelie pointed out, start a topic in the "Feminism" folder, and move it to the TVM folder on January 1st. That sounds like a good solution.

@Meelie: Thanks for keeping everything tidy here:)

179584 The whole "grow some balls" issue is wrong on so many levels, so cissexist, heterosexist...
I can't itinerate how much I love the responses in the first post. Sassy:)

Welcome on board, fellow shipmate:)

We already discussed this in a topic a few months ago:

179584 Get more people to be a part of OSS!

And I try to invite an intersex activist to my university for a discussion. That's really needed!

EDIT:
And to be a better informed member of society, especially about feminism.

In my eyes, they are not feminists. What they do (or to better say don't do) is wrong on all levels I can think of!
And, for sure, everybody can be the victim, everybody can be the perpetrator!
Domestic Abuse (17 new)

179584 Samantha wrote: "The acceptance of domestic violence in numerous cultures is horrific! It goes back to the time when men practically owned their wives."

And as Gloria Steinem once said in an "Hard Talk" interview: domestic violence, there wasn't even a word for that; it was called life.

So, we definitely have come far, but we still need to go further.

179584 Now, my dad once said that men actually feel intimidated when women try to behave "man-like."
I don't know what to think of that, I'm not a man.

Now that you mention it, I'm wondering about that too! Like the Pfadfinder, but they are not separated by sex.
The whole system is so fucked up (Sorry for that, but it just gives me the itchies.)
Dec 28, 2016 11:11AM

179584 Now, this is in German, but give me a few days and I'll translate it.

It's about Gloria Steinem (and finally my dad realised Gloria Steinem is a feminist, although she's the one I've been talking about the most, and I told my parents what OSS is about)

http://www.faz.net/aktuell/feuilleton...
I haven't read it yet, but I'm really eager to do so.

Some other articles I'm eager to read are the National Geographic's January issue about gender, and an issue of 3sat that contains a topic about "women's power - the feminism must go into a new wave". I haven't read either of them yet, but as far as I have heard, National Geographic's really worth a read. About 3sat, all the articles that I flipped through are like: yeah, women MUST be strong and, uh, well, you know, be man-like. Which I think is exactly NOT the way we are able to sort things out.

Woah, I'd love to read that:)
179584 And as Ross said, if the skills taught are not gender-specific, what can you hold against that?
But then I'm also the one who thinks that we really have to revolutionise gender as a whole.
179584 I think that this is actually quite harming for the ones not allowed to join. It pains me too, it's just one of the many facts that I want to see changed.

Of course LGBTQIA+ folks need to be allowed to join. In my opinion it's a bit problematic to only say: "boys and girls", because that excludes all the people who are not cis-,heterosexuals, who are excluded on so many aspects of life.

Me either, Sandra! Abuse is abuse, and it is to be condemned (and I normally hardly ever use that word), it is atrocious, and needs to be adressed.

Now, I think some forms of abuse are more visible than others. What do you all think about that?
Dec 28, 2016 10:01AM

179584 This is why we need more feminism, because, let's be honest, such a treatment is so disrespecting, so wrong.

In my opinion, such 'fans' are not real fans - fans have to respect their idol, not claim it. Because that's what he did really:(

Wow, Haydee, you definitely know how to do that! Following activsts on social media is really great, it's always the best to have the information from the ones affected.
Reading feminist literature is not always nice, it's hard work and you come to question yourself/or realise you've been committing to injustice too, although unintentionally.
But we must not blame ourselves (unless we already know that what we do is wrong), but the system.
Without us changing it, it will remain as it was when we are no longer, but we have the power to imagine better.

It would be wonderful if you started a HeforShe club at your area! In my area, there's a Facebook group, and I'm quite proud of that:)

You could read books to begin with!
