James, I didn't either. I'm still shook. I really hate it when I hear people saying Emma is too privileged to say something: Yes, she is privileged, she said so in the speech herself, but why on earth should that mean that she can't promote gender equality? That's so illogical.
I'm not sure if the negative aspect will vanish either. I hope so.
The bad thing is, we don't have a Gloria Steinem, who seems to be quite intersectional, but we only have Alice Schwarzer, and I haven't really read much about her, but she seems to be this anti-man, 68's feminist (who is also problematic with her view about islam) who I really don't identify with.
My mom compared her with Gloria Steinem, and to be honest, I felt ashamed that this comparison was even made!
I don't know much about Alice Schwarzer, but it seemed so illogical.
I need to immerse myself more within feminism in order to better understand it! If only I had the time!

I had a discussion with a lad and the shocking truth I discovered was that one of the political parties of Austria, the Greens, are exactly representing what I definitely consider not to be feminist:
abortion(so you could abort males)
males are to blame for everything
oh, and man-hating in general!
He's really into politics(member of the Communist Party) and I was shocked, still am, because I think:
If that's how feminism is portrayed in the public, how can I (or we in general) make a point about feminism being good for everyone. For EVERY HUMAN!
I understand why they are turned off, I am turned off by that too!
It's insensitive, it's discriminating, I feel ashamed when I say I'm a feminist and people link me with THIS!
Can't they read a dictionary? Haven't they heard Emma's speech (which went kinda viral), in which she said exactly that this is not what feminism is about?
I'm at a loss for words right now!

Let's see how open-minded the book is. I fear it is heteronormative, but let's see!
As fas as I have seen, this read is going to be a controversial one. Let's see nonetheless. Although I do think about sitting this one out!

Well, thats kind of the problem i think.
If you were to start googling feminism you will find all sorts of blogs, websites, etc dedicated to fe..."
James, now this is something that feminism really has to worry about. In feminism it is possible to go from the one extreme to the other extreme.
Many who consider themselves feminists, aren't feminists for me, most important example being the connection with man-hating.

Sure Ross, but I've been reading it about 4 weeks ago and I need new reading material. But you're right, our Boss Lady is really putting a lot of thought - and feeling - into choosing the books.

I'd love to see Bunny joining us here - since she's the expert, we could actually get much more out of it than just us talking about it.

Definitely worth a reread:)

Ross, your second paragraph warms my heart:) No, for sure, we are all different but equal in value.
I don't know if sexual orientation and gender are linked, an interesting question tho.

Robert, don't mind the long answer. It's always a pleasure for me to read people's comments, may they be short or long.
The longer you're here, the more you will learn. And no, I also had wrong assumptions about feminism in the first place, you're not alone.

James, I congratulate you on your development. It's heartwarming to read such a comment.
Emma sure does ignite some change, you're the best example.
I hope there are many more who'll find their place in this movement of ours.

Apology taken.
Don't worry about the Umlaut, many call me Meerder here, I like that.

Interesting discussion, I must second Ross here because OSS is available for everyone who has internet and can speak English. Because of that, many Westerners are found here (no surprise), but we also have members from other parts of the world too, which I greatly appreciate.
Meelie wrote: "Firstly, hello, Eric!
Secondly - why should it be of concern?? This is meant to be a safe place for all to discuss the books read, there shouldn't be reason for anyone's sex/gender to be an issue..."
Thanks Meelie for once again stating that gender and age, among other boxes, aren't an obstacle here, they're here to enrich conversation.

You nailed it Agnes! Hermaphrodite is confusing on the one hand, and hurting on the other hand, that's why it's not used anymore:=) Really glad about that.

I think she might have dissociated from these events in her life. That's why they're so "clinical."

I haven't thought of anything yet. I was hoping people's brains would kick in and we had some sort of brainstorming.
Ideas, folks, are greatly appreciated!

Why do you think that you can't have a relationship with her? A relationship is more than just - let's face it - sex and romance. And demisexual and -romantic doesn't mean she's not interested in either, it just needs time!

Interesting, Ana! Being alone doesn't seem to be that much of a controversy here in Austria, although I hear both.
On the other hand, I don't know anybody who has been sexually harassed that I know. In a small village it's just that: You're alone at night, everybody else is in their houses.
