179584 Eugenia, it is not.
And it makes me sick!
I'm serious, we need to change rape culture! It is internalized from a very young age, it also happened to me. But when you are willing to think about it, and think with the mind rather than the down parts, you will come to the conclusion that it's wrong.

So, I really appreciate people like Dr. Syed, who fight at the front of the battle and treat the wounded. It's a shame that police members act like this - we need to change culture in order to change behaviour!

179584 Well, she's the one person I'm most interested in since the beginning, and only now I begin to appreciate the other females too. So yes, like a sister, if I had one.

To be honest, I think we need to reinvent language, both in English and German, in order to make it more inclusive and fairer to everybody's gender, sex and special needs.

179584 It is. And so intersectional:)
And... I really wasn't into autobiographies (or biographies in general) before OSS, but it definitely changed.
Petitions (9 new)
Dec 01, 2016 11:17AM

179584 If enough people sign it, it will work. Austria is quite strict to this.

For example: A nuclear power plant was avoided because of petition, where 50,5 per cent were against it. And now we don't have a running nuclear power plant, I'm quite glad about it!

179584 There's nothing bad about happy endings, even Harry Potter got one!

Well, I think it's better to speak of feminismS instead of feminism, because since we're all humans we have very different ways to address the problems we face and, ultimately, how we grade problems in importance.

179584 Noemi, maybe she dissociated from the bad things that happened to her. As far as I understand it, then it feels like it happened to someone else, not to oneself.

Just a theory that would explain it, in my opinion.
Hormonal Cycle (6 new)

179584 Ah, hormones are a vicious beast:)
Everybody has different levels of hormones, that's totally normal.

But if you suffer you should better do something about it!

179584 There are too many good books to read in one short life:(

Why can't we live forever?
Nov 30, 2016 02:34AM

179584 If you want to explore Native American women as well, you could have a look into Wilma Mankiller. She was chief of the Cherokee nation and from what I read in My Life on the Road, was eager to change living conditions for the Cherokee nation as well as other Peoples.

And woc (women of colour) is perfectly fine, it's intersectional indeed. No problems here:)

I know this feeling, but for different reasons - well, I'm never drinking because my life is bad as it is, and I don't want it to become worse.

179584 This article gives me the itches, really. 1 of 5 believe feminism is anti-man? I had this discussion with my dad this weekend and it was rather frustrating, for I thought he has had paid enough attention to know that feminism is equality for all, and not anti-men.
Okay, many may not see themselves as feminists, but at least they are believing in gender equality. I won't fight over labels here.

Emma reminding the world (and us) that feminism comes in all shapes and forms - it's a rather good time to do so now, with OSS being a strong force:) (Do you remember when the sales soared 109% of MLOTR, because of us? Good times:) )

179584 Ross, may I say you're wonderful?

No, for sure, I could also distribute the coming books at the campus or in the tram. But OSS' people first, that's for me I say!

179584 I think that fair trade is the only solution in the long run. Because since we live in a capitalist society, we as the ones who are buying clothes are actually quite mighty.

When producing clothes that aren't bought anymore, conditions will change. For the better!

Cynthia, I don't understand your question properly. How could I help you.

Coming back to the discussion:
I think the problem is if you change in the way Maya did and you discover that you changed so much you don't recognise yourself anymore.

The same applies for me. But I really had troubles reading it because the stories were so harsh and not easy to read at all.

I hope our next book will be a bit lighter to read.

179584 When it comes to volunteering we also have to keep in mind that #voluntourism is more harming than doing good.
Tbh, I want to help too but I don't know how! Maybe I can volunteer when I study a semester or two abroad, I don't know.

Verena, it would be really nice if you told us about the sponsorship of a child in Nepal?

Btw, when we get to know single stories our brain parts which are influenced by emotions work more than when we hear simple statistics. That's where the fluffy feeling comes from.
Also interesting: If you did algebra you're not so willing to donate money afterwards than if you didn't. (Grammar sucks again, I better have a nap=) )

179584 It makes me so sad to read that some of your wonderful mothers weren't allowed/able to go to school.
That makes me realize how fortunate and lucky I am. It makes me learn even harder, so to not "waste" time and money, because I'd feel guilty if I did knowing that so many were not as luck as I am now.

This is exactly what I needed right now:) Thanks for sharing. Ah, Maya Angelou was a charismatic leader in her way. I can't wait to read more from her!

Do you wanna make a thread about it?
Sounds worth writing more about it than just a few lines.

I must say there's no German equivalent either, or at least I don't know of any. To simply translate that phrase woud sound stupid, so one should come up with another term:)

This article makes me nauseous. The sad thing is that the commenters didn't realize that they had internalized rape culture already.
This world makes me sick!
