MEET JANE. Born Kim Chun-ja in Ilsan, South Korea, Jane and her parents moved to Los Angeles, California, when she was two years old upon the news that her mother would be expecting twins. So they moved in with her mother's older brother and his wife and three kids, and, well, it didn't stop there, because another cousin and two more siblings came not long after. Maybe she's naturally patient, or maybe the reason Jane's never had a problem dealing with the other members of Nyx is because she grew up in a household with eight other kids.
FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE, singer-songwriter and Los Angeles native James Lee has never conformed to what he maybe should do. He's fearless, a go-getter ─ or, according to some, just plain stupid ─ and he's never let the prejudices that Asian-Americans face in the entertainment industry stop him from achieving his dreams. Not for the most part, anyway.
When he was a little boy, James Lee had the very broad goal of becoming a singer. Pop star? Wedding singer? Musical theater actor? It was undecided. But by the time he was finishing high school, James had realized his true passion: country music. So he tried, tirelessly, to get noticed by a talent agency. By chance, he happened to be noticed by a scouting agent from Somy Music ─ one of the biggest music agencies in the world. He saw in James star material: the looks, the charm, the talent. Except, as most people are, he was skeptical of the idea of a Korean country music singer. James' contract came with an ultimatum: pop music, or no record deal.
Now, James isn't that stupid. He signed.
And over the past ten years, Somy Music has succeeded in transforming their country-wannabe into one of the biggest names in pop music. Dabbling in indie, rock, alternative, r&b ─ and yes, country ─ influences, James' fans swear that there's nothing that he can't do. Except for his one gaping flaw: the man has two left feet. Whatever rhythmic ability he has with his instruments (guitar, bass, piano, drums, and oboe, for the record) magically disappears when he tries to channel it into dance. But James Lee doesn't do the things he should do, or not do the things he shouldn't do, so he dances. His dad always told him that he could do anything well if he worked hard enough, so look out world, here he is.

WHEN Hyekyung started training at Adachihara, everyone said the same thing: that she was only doing it because her older brother was doing it. And they weren't wrong about it — someone like Jung Hyekyung wasn't suited to this kind of work. She didn't have the heart, or the body for combat, or anything. If anything, she was more suited to be the one on the other end of the comm, safe behind a computer. But Hyekyung had always been a follower, and she'd spent her entire life following wherever Sookyung went. So when he joined Adachihara, it was only natural that Hyekyung would, too.
They said that when it came down to it, Hyekyung would never be able to choose their mission over Sookyung. They were wrong.
When the time came, Hyekyung chose the mission, and now, half her left arm is missing and her older brother is a vegetable in a hospital bed that their parents don't have the heart to pull the plug on. Hit by a drunk driver, they were told. That it was someone else. Not Hyekyung. (It was Hyekyung. He's there because of her.)
Now, Hyekyung doesn't do field work. Most of her work at Adachihara is done behind the scenes, plotting strategies and predicting opponents' next moves — the things she was always more suited for. Occasionally, she helps with training, and when she tells a new recruit that they'd be better off in a different division, she means it.
PSYCHIATRIST NOTES
KIM MYUNGHWA KNEW that there would be whispers. That there would be rumors. That some people wouldn't even bother lowering their voice to a whisper. When her grandfather stepped down from his position as Adachihara's head physician, it was only expected that the role would be handed down to either the most experienced physician or to Kim's eldest grandson. It didn't go to either of them. Instead, it went to Myunghwa.
