MEET STAR☆NINE'S FIRECRACKER, KANG SERA. Originally known primarily for her visuals, Sera quickly showed the world that she was more than just a pretty face as she flaunted her wit and humor on variety shows. Since then, she's held many fixed positions on different variety programs, well-liked for both her commentary and her hosting skills. After she filled in as a temporary MC for Friday Idol, Sera garnered support from other groups' fandoms for having a kind and easygoing personality around her juniors and her ability to raise the mood.
But, of course, with more popularity comes more hate, and Sera has more than her fair share of both. Sera could sit nice and pretty like a doll, never opening her mouth except to smile — but that's not who she is, nor is it who she wants to be. She refuses to water her personality down for anyone, change herself just because it's what some old man says she should do, because that's what makes her STAR☆NINE's irreplaceable Kang Sera, bold and beautiful and bright as the fucking sun.

WHEN HE WAS STILL A MEMBER OF EXTL, Kenji felt like an exotic show pony. Look! LMH Entertainment found a Japanese man handsome enough to still be handsome in Korea! He can sing! He can dance! He can do everything! He can bear the weight of hundreds of years of bitterness and bad history on his shoulders! And at first, he didn't mind it. He left the comfort of his home and went to Korea for a reason: because he dreamed of becoming a global superstar, and Japan's market couldn't take him there. Like everyone else who went through the training system, he was willing to make sacrifices — and for one of the first Japanese to debut in Korea, his dignity was often one of them. Kenji has a thick skin. He can laugh off the offensive remarks, become the person that he needed to in order to be loved in Korea. And for the first years of EXTL's career, he was indeed one of the most popular members for his genius dancing ability and complete fluency in Korean, alongside handsome visuals and an easygoing personality. He learned how to get by. He had to be a certain kind of person in order to survive, so he adapted.
The injury might have been his fault. Or maybe it could be blamed on the company that forced him to practice for so long, to practice until he couldn't move any more. Maybe it was his fault for not being careful and re-injuring his leg, or maybe it was the company that wouldn't let him take a break to heal. And then the doctor told him that if he injured his leg again, he wouldn't be able to dance anymore, and something inside Kenji shifted. He could give up a lot of things to be here — his dignity, his pride in his people, his home, his health. He did give them up. But he couldn't give up the one thing that he had held to, steadfast, the only thing that, in the end, made him valuable. Really, there was no way for him to continue a Korean career. To stay with EXTL would be a death wish for his career, and what happens to a little boy from Osaka, left in Seoul with no more talent to show? It wasn't a matter of choice. It was either to lose himself completely or to save what little of Nitta Kenji was really left, and eventually, you need to start doing things for yourself.

For any Japanese idol to debut under a group in Korea is brave, and the decision to inclu-de a foreigner in the inaugural lineup of CGD48's Team C was met with more than a little scrutiny, particularly when taking into consideration that a separate, internationally-cent-ered team would also make their debut. The decision wasn't for nothing. Nitta Kenji is c-onsidered by some to be something of a genius when it comes to dancing, and his chore-ographies are still used by GNM48 and CGD48 even after his graduation. At no point al-ong the way was it easy, and there were times when Kenji wished that he hadn't accept-ed the company's proposal and instead debuted as a member of Team 48 with members who looked and talked like him. Whatever hate the more popular members of the group received, he was met with more, and all he could do was just smile through it all, because anything else could — and would — be spun into a controversy. It was his skill in speaking Korean, Mandarin, and English in addition to Japanese which helped boost Team C to the next level of international popularity, and though he was never considered an ace while promoting in Korea, he was met with strong positive responses from other parts of Asia. Perhaps inevitably a day came when Kenji realized that his thoughts were coming first in Korean, though he would swear on his life that such a thing would never happen, and the next day he went to the company offices to request his graduation. He was supposed to come to Korea to represent Japan, not to leave his homeland behind. Though his Korean activities are still managed by 48 Entertainment, and he still spends at least half of the y-ear either in Korea or elsewhere overseas, his heart has finally come home, and the child from Ōsaka finally feels healthy.

ISEUL WAITS. She waits, and she works, and she waits, and she trains, and she waits for the day that LMH Entertainment finally will tell her that she's going to debut. By now it's been thirteen years since she became a trainee at LMH Entertainment, and Iseul has yet to be confirmed for a debut. When Julietz was preparing for their debut, they had told her, we're considering you for the lineup. When Siren was preparing for their debut, they had told her, you're likely to be part of the lineup. And she was, at first. But then at some point along the way, somewhere between the time they told her that her dream would come true and when they snatched it away, they decided that Iseul wasn't good enough to debut in Siren.
Back then, Iseul thought that if you worked hard, you would be rewarded. Now, she isn't so sure. For more than a decade, for more than half her life, she has worked so hard for this dream, and she has seen the ones who auditioned alongside her debut, quit, choose a different path. And now, Iseul is no longer the idealistic nine-year-old dancer that she was when she joined the company. Now, she's Seo Iseul, the company's longest trainee, the one who brings a tissue when the new kids cry, the one who tells the other trainees let's keep working hard together, we'll make it to the top someday with a smile on her face. But she knows what some people say — why is she still here? Why hasn't she given up? Why didn't she debut with Julietz, debut with Siren? And honestly? Iseul doesn't know, either. No matter what she does, it never seems to be enough, and she's running out of hopes to hold on to. She knows she's worked hard, she knows she's good at this, really good, that on paper, she should have everything that it takes to be successful. But every time she tries to take a step forward, there's something to push her back, and maybe it's never been about the company, maybe it's never been about how hard she works or how well she sings, maybe what's holding her back is something everyone but her can see, something so deep inside her that she'll never be able to change it.

SIREN'S QUEEN OF DUAL CHARMS: Sexy goddess on stage, ahjussi and proud father of seven off. When LMH Entertainment released Siren's debut teaser photos, Kim Jaehee earned attention for her elegant and chic visuals, prompting speculation that the "new generation goddess of beauty" would pursue acting or possibly carry on the ice princess role. They couldn't have been more wrong, because Siren's main dancer has no interest in acting, and every interest in embarrassing her teammates with her father-like and tomboyish personality. Her relaxed but hardworking character has earned her popularity among people of all ages and genders, giving the feeling of a girl — or, perhaps, grandfather — next door. While some say that she seems fake, it's true that she loves Siren and is proud of what they've been able to achieve. And sure, she's silly, she likes to tease the younger members of the group and mess around with them on variety — but as one of Siren's oldest members and one of the ones with the longest training period, Jaehee also feels a strong responsibility to her group. Maybe she says that it's because of attention-seeking tendencies when she's acting up on television, but make no mistake: the only people she thinks of when she's working hard are her parents and Siren.

SOME PEOPLE HAVE CONNECTIONS. Kim Deokhwa is one of these people. And any person who knows EXTL's lead rapper Lil D — stage name chosen by Deokhwa himself — would know it, because it's pretty obvious that it's the main reason he's in South Korea's top idol group. Sure, over years of training he has reasonably good dance ability and (half decent) rap skills. That part is the hard work. The lucky part is that he happens to be the brother-in-law of LMH Entertainment's Vice President.
Deokhwa isn't a slacker — he knows how to pull his load for a performance. (Not that it's hard when he gets approximately one line per song.) He is not, however, a considerate person. And maybe that's just what happens when you're a literal chaebol and for your whole life since conception you've been given anything and everything you want without having to factor in other people. So he doesn't. He doesn't think about them, because he doesn't need to. Deokhwa has a safety net that will stay with him for his whole life so he doesn't need to consider others. Deokhwa could drive under the influence or commit manslaughter with no real consequences. (But he wouldn't do those things, because he's dumb, but he's not stupid, okay?) He's not evil. He's not a total idiot. It's just, well, for lack of trying.
JUST FOR THE RECORD: Junghwan did not choose this stage name for himself. Before EXTL debuted, the company told him that if he went by his real name, the fans would see him as a father, not a boyfriend. They were, of course, correct, except that they failed to realize that the issue had less to do with Junghwan's name, and more to do with the personality that he's had since he came out of the womb.
Since EXTL's debut, Junghwan has been one of the most popular members, for his vocals and visuals as well as for his leadership. Lately, the latter has been under some scrutiny, with Junghwan receiving some criticism for not being able to keep his group together. At the same time, there are others who say that it only makes him a better leader for being able to bring the remaining members closer. As for Junghwan himself, he's not really sure. It's true that he feels that he could have — should have — done more for the members who left. It's also true that he's trying hard to make EXTL's name a good one. Because that's what he should be doing. Junghwan is the oldest, he's the leader, he's supposed to know what to do, but he's not really sure anymore.

NOW KNOWN AS SIREN'S GLASS HEART, Baek Dahye was one of the more popular LMH Rookies before her debut, expected to quickly become a popular member. And honestly? She expected it, too. It wasn't a secret that at her debut, and still now, she was one of LMH Entertainment's most stable vocalists. But then, overcome with nerves during her debut stage, her high note went tragically flat. And in that moment? Every single little shred of confidence that Dahye had worked to gain over the years — gone.
And even though after almost two years since her debut stage she's been able to gain a reputation as one of the best performers on her team, Dahye hasn't been able to rebuild her self-esteem. She's a sensitive girl, Siren's crybaby, she always has been; and though she can put on a fierce and confident face on stage, Dahye struggles to feel the part. She used to be fearless, ready to try new things back then, but now, she can't even improve her ranking because the idea of going on variety shows alone or speaking up when she's with the group gives her anxiety. All she wants is to go back, restart, feel like the girl she was two years ago, but she doesn't even really know who that girl was anymore.

Meet the 24-year-old whose music has
taken the Korean hip-hop and R&B scene
by storm as she talks about her journey to the top, what inspires her to write her music, and her "Three H's" which have given her the strength to break past all of the barriers set before her.
Less than two years ago, Son Hyunkyung — better known by her stage name HYUN.K — was just an average student studying business administration at Howon University. Though Son had long been interested in music, she says that she "never dreamed it would be anything more than a passion project." Life, she says, works in mysterious ways, and Son calls the ensuing sequence of events her "miracle."
"I had a friend studying applied music," she says. "There was a guest that day, an alumni, who was coming as a guest lecturer, and my friend was supposed to play this song that he had written. But the girl who was going to sing came down with laryngitis, so my friend asked me if I would fill in for her, since I had helped him with the lyrics earlier."
Son never could have dreamed that her impromptu university performance would land her the honor of becoming the first signed recording artist at singer and producer Shim Wooseong's newly-established Daybreak Label under BS M&M. "It's an incredible privilege," Son says. "I wasn't anybody — just a business student who happened to sing in the right place at the right time. Really, I just got lucky."
When I mention that her perfect all-kill with Jenga in the first half of the year doesn't seem like pure luck, Son laughs, shaking her head shyly. "Okay, maybe it's not all luck," she admits, "but I'm still very thankful.
Though she's become well known for
her charms inside and out of her music, Son admits that being around people and sharing her work wasn't always easy. "I was really shy when I was in school," she says. "I've been writing music since I was young, since I was in middle school — but back then, I wouldn't let anyone hear or even see what I'd written. Most people didn't even know I wrote music."
This was something that Son continued to struggle with even after her talent was discovered. "The director and I had many meetings about it," she says. "About whether I should proceed as a producer or a recording artist. I was so afraid of putting myself out there, and then everyone hating me."
With some help, Son developed what she calls her "Three H's": Hello, heart, and HYUN.K. Hello, she says, because you can't get anywhere without an introduction. Everyone else started somewhere, too. Heart, because her heart is in her music, and she has to remember that this is what she loves to do, and her passion is stronger than her fears. And last but certainly not least, her stage name, HYUN.K — her "superhero name", as she calls it, because sometimes you need to feel like a hero to have the strength to face the world.
