Try hot buttered rum, perhaps? That's adult, delicious..."

Rum you say? Hmmm....

154447 I don't own it myself yet, but I have asked for it for this birthday... subtle hints... that were not at all subtle! :D

I actually got that one for my birthday last year and it has seen quite a few play-throughs. No matter what though, if I am the one responsible for the 'Haunt'... it is always tentacle monsters or some variation. It is like they know or something!

My favourite right now is called Terra Mystica. It is confusing at first, but it is great fun. The best part is that no one is doing the same strategy, like in other games! Great fun!

154447 *Virginia earns one use of bold in this topic. Use it well!"

Yes, I remember when Aqua came out, I guess... wait a second... who is that on MY lawn? Get off it, Dern kids! *Shakes fist*

I am so sensitive to Aqua(velva) and other perfumes. I am also allergic to dust. And cats. And feathers. And trees. And lawns. And kids on my dern lawn!

You used the rails... to attempt to derail. Oh. +5 Meta points for that!

154447 (it is amazing when you find out Mods are excellent at derailing topics)

I don't think that a single time when Ticket to Ride is played around my place that someone hasn't burst into that song!
I mean, come on, Trains and Barbie Girl go hand in hand, am I right? Aqua is pretty old school, some don't like them, but they did have some good hits. Cartoon Heroes is one of my best Dance Dance Revolution songs!

154447 Have you ever been reading a thread on Goodreads and it gets derailed? You were reading all about book marketing and suddenly you have 15 posts off topic about the benefits of citrus fruits on sea voyages.

Getting off topic is fun sometimes, but we should probably stay on topic if we can... except here!

Try to derail this thread. I dare you. You can't just change the topic, it has to be sneaky... maybe mention something on the sly that will hook someone else, maybe work in teams, or maybe, just maybe, let it flow organically through one conversation to the next. But no... 'Speaking of feathers, I like Jupiter.' stuff!

As this topic is not yet derailed it will start on rails.

Topic: Trains

Has anyone ever played Ticket to Ride? I think it is a great board game, all about trains. It is easy to learn and can help to gradually introduce those that are scared of complicated board games into the hobby. There is subtle strategy, it is fun, and it allows me to pick green trains! Who doesn't like green trains?

I was snuggled to death in a previous life. That is why I have a birthmark on my sweetmeats!

154447 This is how I always sing this song. I have no idea what the real words are. They sure sound like this though.

One. Two. Three. Four.
Tell me that you love me more.
Loose lips, sink ships.
I don't know the words to this.

154447 Riley wrote: "I mean, it's not my fault I can solve your math problem in my head and you can't."

First, thanks!
Second. This. All kinds of this.

I loved math, and decided to take Math 12 and Calculus.
That was apparently a mistake.
My brain would only learn the best way to do something, and discard the other method. 50% Math, 50% Calculus.

Combine that with a teacher that used the same tests / problems for both classes, and graded mostly based on showing your work...
Apparently, using Mathulus isn't the correct way of 'showing your work'.

Can you get nearly every question right on assignments and tests and still only pass your classes because someone besides your teacher graded the mid-term and final? Yes, yes you can. (That teacher would get a bop on the head, Peter Rabbit Style, if I ever saw him again.

154447 It was mentioned in 'The Lies your Teachers told you' thread that a truths conversation would be a quick conversation.

Always one to test out theories I have made this thread. What are some of the truths your teachers told you?

I shall go first, as is customary, when you start a thread.

We had to do English journals in grade 11 (and eventually 12). Basically they were a diary about things and whatnots just to get us writing. Every semester we were to do 25 of the 2 pages things. There was much hate for these little blighters in the class.

Customary to not giving a darn about them, (and my typical attitude at the time towards putting things off) they were due the next morning. It was 8pm. I had done... zero of them. It was probably time to start... how long could it take?

Short answer: A long time. I stayed up all night. Wrote them all through other classes, skipped lunch, and handed them in exhausted at the end of the last class for the day, when they were due. It was then the weekend. I slept a lot.

On Monday my teacher took me aside and asked, "You stayed up all night writing these, didn't you? You post-dated them, but that is a lie, isn't it? You even wrote the last two in my class instead of listening to me talk about poetry!"
I sheepishly replied with a feeble "Yes."
"Wonderful!" He replied. "Just wanted to check!"

I was shocked, didn't say anything, so he did.
"I want you to do that every time! In fact, I insist upon it. These were the most crazy things I have read from a student and I positively loved them. Each one was a further decent into the madness that is your completely insane writing style, and I want to read more of it. Next time, put the times on it so I can experience it in real time."

I got 120% on those, a 20% bonus for making him laugh like a crazy person. From the most notoriously hard marker in the school. He told me to analyze the last ones, and see what made them stand out - then to always write like that. That was my style, and I needed to embrace the crazy, and to be a writer that used that style.

I promptly ignore that advice and went into a completely different field.

154447 To be fair the "cannot start a sentence with a conjunction" rule is not that horrible in the grand scheme of things. You can do it occasionally without problems, and I see why it is taught. Given how my 6 year old niece talks, pretty much every sentence that doesn't start with a noun starts with one, so I can see why they want to put a stop to it.

'Never' was a bit harsh though. You can do it. I mostly do for impact. But, sweet Maker if you do it every second sentence for an entire book I am going to hit you with it!

154447 Sue (Dog Mom) wrote: "Also, are you able to order a copy of your print book from CS to go over it one last time before making it live and available for sale? "

Yes. You are allowed to get 5 proof copies at once. They have an extra page that says 'PROOF' on it.
Additionally, you can not publish it right away when in distribution and order copies just for yourself, if you wanted to get copies without it being available for sale.

As for the other question... your book size is your book size. Let it be what it is! :D
Palatino Linotype might be a bit fragile for books because it is so thin, but not a bad choice overall really, if it fits the style of your book. 11pt is big enough, maybe even too big for that font, as it is tall. Experiment with other fonts, it could save you multiple pages and some printing cost in the end!
